What do past participants have to say about the Panama Posse ?
โWe absolutely loved the Panama Posse! We enjoyed having the latest information on marinas, anchor spots, grocery shopping, laundry, and country check-in or out. Very valuable. And even better was the wonderful friendships made with lots of great people! Many thanks for heading up a fantastic rally.โDebbie & Rob SV Annapurna
โI wanted to explore. See new places. Meet new people. Joining up with the Panama Posse helped make all that possible.
Releasing baby turtles in Zihuatenejo, surviving the Tehuantepec and the Papagayos, an afternoon poolside at Gordieโs and movie night at Coconutz in Playa del Cocosโฆ.
The only thing better than anchoring at Ballena Bay Costa Rica after a full and beautiful day running south along the coast? Doing it with a small flotilla of fellow cruisers from the Panama Posseโฆ
The next day? A dinghy run up the estuary, with howler monkeys in full throat, and a picnic on a sugar sand beach with palm trees leaning out over the water, providing shade for the cold beer and snacks with some of the coolest people on the water. Thatโs the Panama Posse.
These are some of the memories Iโll have for the rest of my life thanks to the friends I made this past year in the Inaugural Panama Posse run from Barra de Navidad Mexico to Vista Mar Marina in San Carlos Panama.โ

โJoining the Panama Posse was the best decision we made last year. Not only did we meet great people traveling the same coastline but the shared intel on anchorages and check-in procedures was invaluable!! We would highly recommend it to anyone choosing to travel this route.โ

"Participating in the Panama Posse was like being part of a family and less like a typical rally. We met some of the most wonderful people whom we will be life long friends. We gained information in real time about both anchorages and weather that was invaluable. No cruise through Mexico and Central America would be as complete without sailing it as part of the Panama Posse.โ

SV Sea Glass
โGreetings my friends, Thought Janet and I would tell of our experience with the Panama Posse. The 2018 Posse had 83 boats! We didnโt meet all boats but the boats we met and traveled with were very appreciated as we entered uncharted waters in Central America. Itโs a good feeling when you can stop by a boat or call on a radio looking for a opinion on weather or ports of entry. Panama Posse ROCKS !!โ
Chris & Janet
SV Respite
As a single handed sailor it gave me community. I did go places that would have been skipped for safety reasons. Others reports changed my early assumptions.
In remote locations because of the Posse I knew other boats. More friends were made.
On tours I was able to join a group with made the time better.
Even with the end in June the unofficial Posse continues. I have helped three Posse boats transit the canal.
SV Easy
...Diane and I uncharacteristically participated in Panama Posse 2017, the inaugural year of the rally. Uncharacteristically I say because we typically shy away from highly organized cruising rallies. This one was different and we loved the Posse and the camaraderie of this group of loosely organized boats making their way from Barra de Navidad, MX to Panama City, Panama and all places between and beyond... With 83 boats signing on last year there was rarely a shortage of Posse boats along the way to socialize and explore together... the members were there to help each other out as fellow cruisers.
The Posse also helped to identify many anchorages along the coast not mentioned in cruising guides, arrange discounted rates at many marinas, identify good boatworkers, mechanics and tour guides, streamline some check-in processes, adapt to life in the various countries being visited and a thousand other things that makes a cruiserโs life a bit better.
If you are thinking of transiting the Pacific Coast to Panama I would highly recommend that you look into Panama Posse 2018.

๐ฒ๐ฝ TEQUILA
๐ฒ๐ฝ TEQUILA
The official town of Tequila - a 3 hour drive from the Coast - Museum Tasting and how it is produced barrels and Tequila Tastings.
The 34,658 ha site, between the foothills of the Tequila Volcano and the deep valley of the Rio Grande River, is part of an expansive landscape of blue agave, shaped by the culture of the plant used since the 16th century to produce tequila spirit and for at least 2,000 years to make fermented drinks and cloth.
Within the landscape are working distilleries reflecting the growth in the international consumption of tequila in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, the agave culture is seen as part of national identity. The area encloses a living, working landscape of blue agave fields and the urban settlements of Tequila, Arenal, and Amatitan with large distilleries where the agave โpineapple' is fermented and distilled.
The property is also a testimony to the Teuchitlan cultures which shaped the Tequila area from AD 200-900, notably through the creation of terraces for agriculture, housing, temples, ceremonial mounds and ball courts.
Tequila is produced by removing the heart of the plant in its seventh to fourteenth year
Harvested piรฑas normally weigh 80โ200 pounds ย This heart is stripped of its leaves and heated to convert the inulin to sugars.
True tequila is made from blue agave. The production of tequila is divided into seven steps: harvesting, cooking, fermentation, distillation, aging and bottling
Best to stay overnight and savor the offerings.
HOW TO MAKE TEQUILA ?
Making tequila (reposado) from scratch is a complex and labor-intensive process that requires specific ingredients, equipment, and adherence to legal regulations, especially if you want to produce it authentically in accordance with Mexican standards. Below is a simplified overview of the process:
Ingredients:
- Blue Weber Agave: The primary ingredient.
- Water: For fermentation.
- Yeast: For fermentation.
Equipment:
- Oven or Autoclave: For cooking the agave.
- Crusher or Mill: To extract the agave juice.
- Fermentation Tanks: For fermenting the agave juice.
- Distillation Equipment: For distilling the fermented juice.
- Oak Barrels: For aging the tequila to make it reposado.
Process:
1. Harvesting:
- Agave Plants: Harvest mature Blue Weber agave plants (usually around 7-10 years old). The heart of the agave, known as the piรฑa, is used.
2. Cooking:
- Cook the Piรฑas: Cook the agave piรฑas in an oven or autoclave to convert the complex carbohydrates into fermentable sugars. This usually takes about 24-36 hours in a traditional brick oven or around 6 hours in an autoclave.
3. Extraction:
- Extract the Juice: Crush the cooked agave piรฑas to extract the sugary juice, called aguamiel.
4. Fermentation:
- Ferment the Juice: Transfer the agave juice to fermentation tanks. Add water and yeast to initiate fermentation. This process can take several days, during which the sugars are converted into alcohol.
5. Distillation:
- Distill the Fermented Juice: Distill the fermented juice twice. The first distillation, called "destrozamiento," separates the alcohol from the solids. The second distillation, called "rectification," refines the alcohol further.
6. Aging:
- Age the Tequila: Transfer the distilled tequila to oak barrels for aging. To be classified as reposado, the tequila must be aged for a minimum of two months but less than one year.
7. Bottling:
- Bottle the Tequila: Once the aging process is complete, the tequila is filtered, if necessary, and then bottled.
Legal Considerations:
- Regulations: If you want to label your product as tequila, you must comply with the regulations set by the Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT) in Mexico. This includes producing the tequila within designated regions of Mexico and adhering to specific production standards.
Notes:
- The quality of the final product depends significantly on the quality of the agave, the fermentation process, the distillation techniques, and the aging process.
- Making tequila at home for personal consumption is legal in some places, but commercial production requires appropriate licenses and adherence to local laws and regulations.
Additional Tips:
- Experimenting with different types of oak barrels can influence the flavor profile of your tequila reposado.
- Pay attention to the fermentation temperature, as it can affect the flavor and quality of the tequila.
This is a basic overview of making tequila reposado. For a more detailed and precise process, especially if you plan to produce commercially, consider consulting with experts and referring to official guidelines.
Civil War Era Submarine in Panama?
Did you know that there is a rusting hulk of a submarine on a beach in the Las Perlas Island that's been there since the 1860's! How cool is that? Check it out on San Telmo Island. Read all about it here:ย https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sub_Marine_Explorer

Tehuantepec
So it's time to start our long range planing and regardless of when you and your vessel plan on crossing the Tehuantepec - it is best to proceed with caution -
Your crossing the Tehuantepec will depend on your speed and your "size" of the the Weather Window.
Ocean waves take about 6 - 12 hours toย lay down so only go straight across if you got 48 hours.
Hugging the shore adds 60 NM but add's the ability for you to get live weather and even anchor off the shores
Hugging the shore is the more prudent choice as you can pick up 7 cellphone towers and update your weather forecasts.
Weather.โIn the vicinity of the Gulf of Tehuantepec, which includes Puerto de Salina Cruz, the N winds are particularly strong. These winds, known locally as Tehuantepecers, generally prevail from October through April and at times blow with a force that exceeds force 8. There is less than 1 day per month of such winds from May to September. These winds ma7 last several hours or several days, are liable to raise a high sea, and may be felt up to 100 miles offshore. The onset of these gale force winds may be indicated by a brief periods of rain from arched squall clouds followed by quickly clearing or cloudless skies.
The barometer cannot be relied on to give any prior warning.
Tides
Currents.โThe tides rise about 1.1m at springs and
1m at neaps
WINDS
Tides and Currents
The tidal currentsย set north and south throughout the Canal de la Mona and areย UNPREDICTABLE!
A currentย ย of about 1-knot for the northerly and southerly currents in the Mona. In summer, when the trade wind has slackened and blows more from the east and east/southeast, a strong counter-current sets east off the southern coast of Hispaniola.
