gorgeous. BUT she has been building a nest in my anchor roller for the
past week. I hated to be the bad guy, so I removed the nest material and
laid it on the dock. I did this three times. I put one of those stupid
looking balls up. But that only delayed her one day. This time I tossed
her nest into the water. She was buzzing me the whole time. Don't get me
wrong, I would love to have Knot Right be the nursery of such a
beautiful bird. But laying the eggs, hatching the eggs, and waiting for
the little ones to fly away is a pretty long time that we would have to
stay here. It's bad enough that my boat projects are holding me back,
but baby birds preventing me from anchoring is not on the schedule. Does
anyone in Shelter Bay have a free-standing owl that I can borrow for a
while?

6) SV QUE VENDRA AND SV BRIGADOON

JOURNEY FROM THE OCEAN

OVERLAND

TO LAKE NICARAGUA 🇳🇮

buggy ride nicaragua

When you cannot go by water then go in style.

Last week, SY BRIGADOON III and SY  QUE VENDRA rented a car in Puesta del Sol and toured Nicaragua.

Trip report:

We
arranged for a car through Juanita at Puesta del Sol marina. It costs
us $500 for a week, including full insurance. It was a small car but
sufficient for the four of us, and it drove very well. One of the
surprising things about Nicaragua is its road conditions. They have the
best roads in the whole of Central America. I'm not sure why, given how
poor the country is overall. But it was a much better driving experience
for me compared to Mexico. Still, you have to deal with all sorts of
"things" on the road - "chicken buses", cars, motorcycles, bicycles,
horse carts, an occasional cart pulled by cows, or just herds of cows
walking the rural roads.

There
are many police checks, and we were told that sometimes police may
demand money. We were stopped once, and they just checked our papers and
let us go.

Our
first stop was the Flor de Cana distillery. It is impressive. You can
get drunk just by breathing the air there, as barrels of rum are
everywhere. We tasted a lot of rum, including a 37-year-old special
batch, and bought some more. It was a great stop.

Then
we drove to Leon. The city is much less touristy and much more rundown
than we expected. And it was hot, very hot. It somehow took away from
the joy of experiencing it. Still, we saw the main cathedral, where you
can climb to the top and walk on its roof, taking in the views of the
city and a chain of volcanos. It's best to do it before sunset. We also
did an excellent food tour centered around the local mercado. Also,
there are some good restaurants, like for example Mañana mañana.

Hokipa's Track

The food  fresh, delicious, and colorful

The
next stop was the Mombacho volcano. This was an on-a-whim decision. We
opted to sleep on the mountain in a Mombacho Lodge. It's not so much a
lodge as just cabins in the jungle. For the first time, we saw and heard
howling monkeys. They are impressive! The accommodations were basic,
and we literally slept in the middle of the jungle. Well, we slept about
4 hours, as it was a bit hard to fall asleep with all the jungle noises
around, the wind blowing above us, and knowing that some unwanted
guests may be coming into the cabin (see the pictures). The lodge
provides nets around beds, which we naively thought were against the
mosquitoes. Not really, they are against spiders and all sorts of other
insects. Well, we will remember that experience.

walk in the treetops nicaragua

Elevated trail through the treetops

The
rest of the tour was in Granada, which we truly enjoyed. Granada is
colorful and clean, and it is where we see the most tourists in
Nicaragua. It was also a few degrees cooler there. We stayed in Casa San
Francisco, close to all the attractions. The food was exceptionally
good. The two places we recommend are The Garden Cafe and Pita Pita. We
had an excellent guided walking tour, including a lesson on Nicaragua's
history. Let me tell you, it is pretty complicated.

Our
hotel recommended a tour of "Isletas" on Lake Nicaragua. On the last
day, we chose to do it. It was a very enjoyable tour. A volcanic
eruption 2000 years ago threw a vast amount of rocks into the lake and
created a small archipelago on the lake. Today, some islands have homes,
and others only host groups of monkeys. All those islands are connected
by a maze of waterways, with lush vegetation and hundreds of birds of
various kinds, monkeys, and other animals. The tour took us slowly
through all this, finishing at sunset at remnants of a fort that
defended Granada from pirates of the Caribbean.

10) LAND TRIP TO AN EMBERA VILLAGE IN THE DARIEN 🇵🇦 :

AN AMAZING ADVENTURE AND EXPERIENCE!!

Many
Panama Posse members find themselves in Panama sometime along their
voyage.  Robin and Tad share an experience they had visiting an
Embera Village in the Darien Region of Panama.  The Darien Region
is Panama's easternmost frontier bordering Columbia.  The jungle is
very dense there and home to one of Panama's many indigenous
communities, the Embera.

embera village by canoe

Arriving by long wooden canoe to the Embera Village

Trip Report:

(From
Shelter Bay Marina, we took) a full day trip starting with a 90 minute
drive to the river where you board a motorized canoe and head upriver to
a beautiful waterfall for a swim. Then another 15 minutes or so to the
village where you are welcomed with music and singing. In the village
you will be guided around and shown their daily life and then served a
delicious lunch of fried fresh caught fish with plantain and a fresh
fruit platter. There will be more traditional singing and dancing and an
opportunity to buy some of their beautiful crafts (beadwork, carvings,
basket work). It’s a magical day and worth doing. These people rely on
tourism to meet their financial needs as they have very few ways of
earning a living outside of their village due to the remoteness of their
home.

11) CELEBRATING SEMANA SANTA IN

CENTRAL AMERICA:

A MIX BETWEEN FAITH, TRADITION, AND LOCAL CULTURE

🇲🇽 🇨🇷 🇳🇮  🇸🇻 🇵🇦 🇩🇴 🇭🇳 🇬🇹

Semana Santa in Guatemala

Semana Santa in Guatemala

Catholicism
in Central America is in many places a syncretism (or blending) of
Christianity and Indigenous Faiths.  As such, there is variation in
the ways in which different communities and countries on a whole honor
the same traditions.

Semana
Santa is one such tradition that is celebrated throughout Central
America with  rituals are similar and different.  Semana Santa
or Holy Week (or two)  is celebrated to remember the death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ.  It is common for the week leading up
to Easter Sunday to be marked with processions, church ceremonies, and
time off of work.  The length of time that Semana Santa is observed
varies.  Some places Semana Santa may be observed for a few days
and others up to two weeks.

In
Panama, where the majority of the population lives in Panama City,
Semana Santa marks a mass exodus to 'the country' area east and west of
the city where many families enjoy time together in rural more natural
areas.

Wingfoiling in the anchorage

We are Steph and Stuart Morton of Matador of Hamble. We are sailing a British vintage classic: a 1979 Rival 41.

We
left England in 2006 with a 3 year plan to sail to New Zealand but
discovered the world is far more interesting than we thought so we've
spent 17 years living aboard and visiting fascinating places. We
travelled all over the Mediterranean for 5 years, including the Black
Sea and all the Middle East countries, Greece, Turkey and Italy. To
prove to ourselves that we were indeed real sailors we crossed the
Atlantic in 2011 and sailed the Eastern Caribbean, cycled in Cuba,
threaded the ICW and all the way to Maine and back to Bahamas and
Guatemala. We based ourselves there for 3 years and then broke free and
spent 7 years based in Panama, San Blas and Bocas del Toro. Last year we
escaped through the Panama Canal and we look forward to exploring the
Pacific coast of Mexico and Sea of Cortez. We play Celtic folk music
wherever we go and have recently taken up wingfoiling to stop us getting
older!

PREDICT WIND CAPE

CAPE stands for Convective Available Potential Energy
and is the amount of fuel available to a developing thunderstorm.
More specifically, it describes the instability of the atmosphere
and provides an approximation of updraft strength within a thunderstorm.
CAPE is used by weather officials to understand what the
potential might be for thunderstorms and how powerful those storms might
become if they do materialize.

The
standard measurement of energy is represented as Joules Per Kilogram. A
high CAPE value might also be expressed by weather experts by using the
term “high instability”. When we talk about a highly unstable
atmosphere, CAPE values are usually in excess of 2500 J/kg’s which would
supply ample energy for strong updrafts and violent thunderstorms,
should they develop.

How to Interpret CAPE values using a table and relative text forecast terms.

Severe
thunderstorms require high CAPE values and the higher the CAPE value,
the more energy available to promote thunderstorm growth. However, the
CAPE variable is not a “magic number” that will predict the certainty of
a thunderstorm. But if a thunderstorm does develop, and the CAPE value
is high, then there is a good chance for an “explosive storm”. Below is a
typical CAPE Map in the Caribbean. The Yellow/Orange areas show high
CAPE values.

highlight for everyone that gives themselves time to enjoy it!

SV GALATEA recently took a trip to explore these Panamanian waters west of Punta Mala.  Here Mark and Sarah share their trip report:

Quick
recommendation if you’re looking for your next sailing excursion. A few
weeks ago we set out to explore western Panama. The trip has been
wonderful. We just left
(Isla) Coiba and are currently in the
Islas Secas. We had an incredible week in Bahia Honda (Domingo and his
family are SO nice and they are *dying* for more sailors to come visit
their bay.)  Weather has been outstanding, sailing has been good,
and anchorages have been calm. Do not skip over this part of Panama—it’s
amazing.

10) SY DIVERGENT VISITS

AMAPALA, ISLA TIGRE 🇭🇳  HONDURAS

AMAPALA, ISLA TIGRE 🇭🇳 HONDURAS SIGN

SV DIVERGENT framed by the letter 'P' & anchored just off the town of Amapala

Isla
Tigre is In Bahia Fonseca.  Bahia Fonseca is uniquely shared by
three countries: El Salvador (to the north and west), Honduras
(generally in the center), and Nicaragua (to the south and east).
Isla Tigre is part of Honduras. Visiting vessels are required to
check into the country at their first port of call.

Trip Report from SV DIVERGENT:

Amapala,
Isla Tigre, Honduras! We had a short but wonderful time there and would
definitely go back if we were headed south again.

There are no mooring balls or marina, but we anchored with good holding and plenty of room near the historic Amapala pier.

It
was easy to check in and out with the port captain and immigration
office, both located on the pier. We recall the cost being less than 20
USD.

The
port captain told us they only get a few cruisers each year. There is a
lot of panga traffic to and from the island. As a result, we received a
lot of viewing attention, and people were very friendly.

There is easy dinghy landing next to the pier at low tide.

All the streets we walked on or saw were cobblestone.

Local transportation is mainly via tuk-tuks. We also saw locals on motorbikes and quads.

There were several small tiendas suitable for provisioning.

There is an ATM on the main street near the pier.

Our
exploration and experience were only within the town of Amapala. We did
not get a chance to see the rest of the small island. Amapala is a
no-frills, authentic working village; there are not many tourist
amenities (restaurants, etc.). It was all about the experience for us –
some of the highlights were:

-
The main street connected to the pier has a colorful canopy of
umbrellas, which was fun to have as a backdrop for pictures. (The pier
itself is also quite colorful!)

-
Taking a tuk-tuk ride through town to several tiendas for provisioning.
Our driver was a friendly young man who was all smiles and eager to
suggest where we could shop.

-Seeing interesting historical architecture.

-Watching the locals at work, at play, or at their homes.

11) MUST SEE:
MANUEL ANTONIO PARK

COSTA RICA 🇨🇷

manuel antonio park

Manuel
Antonio National Park – Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio, is a
quintessential Costa Rican National Park in the Central Pacific
Conservation Area.  This national treasure is located on the
Pacific coast a few miles south east of Quepos and Marina Pez Vela.
The park is along the seaside and is rich in flora and fauna.
There are many local and knowledgeable guides that lead nature
walks through the park although the park can also be enjoyed along the
easy walking paths by visitors on their own.  The diversity of
wildlife in its 6.83 km2 (3 sq mi) is unequaled with 109 species of
mammals and 184 species of birds.

looking through scope in nature

Most guides carry high powered viewing scopes for spotting animals up-close.

bird

There are about 184 bird species in the Park.

dragonfly

Among the thousands of insects, this Delicate Dragonfly perches on a stick

Antonio

There are Reptiles and Amphibians adding to the diversity in Manuel Antonio.

iguana

Large Iguanas patrol the beach and love eating Machineel fruits.

There are more shades of green than one can imagine.

There are more shades of green than one can imagine.

green plant

Some plants create vessels that hold water.

Manuel
Antonio was established in 1972. It is well known for its beautiful
beaches and hiking trails. In 2011, Manuel Antonio was listed by Forbes
as among the world’s 12 most beautiful national parks.  Best of all
this National Park can be visited along the Panama Posse Route along
the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.  Cruisers often visit the park
while anchored nearby or tucked into a slip in a very proximal marina.

Manuel Antonio Park is in Good Nautical

12) GOOD NAUTICAL:

PLAYA BIESANZ - PUNTA QUEPOS, COSTA RICA  🇨🇷

GOOD NAUTICAL

Playa
Biesanz lies just north of Punta Quepos which protects the anchorage
from most of the southern swell. The small bay has a crescent of white
sand backed by dense jungle and, lying so close to Manuel Antonio
National Park, is a good place for spotting a variety of monkeys and
even sloths if you are lucky.

https://goodnautical.com/costa-rica/anchorage/playa-biesanz-punta-quepos

Playa Biesanz - Punta Quepos

Anchorage

The
bottom is sandy with some rocks so choose a nice sandy patch in 5-10m
to drop anchor. The holding in sand is good. If the swell is wrapping
around the point in to the bay, use a stern anchor to reduce the roll.
Take the dinghy ashore at the southern end of the beach and one of the
locals will offer to keep an eye on it.

Facilities

A
steep, muddy path from the east end of the beach leads up to a track
which will eventually bring you out on the main road where you can take a
bus or taxi to Quepos (5km) or to Manuel Antonio National Park (3km).
In the small village where the track joins the road there is a bank, a
couple of grocery stores and plenty of restaurants and hotels.

POSSE TIP from SV SERENTITY:

If
you have dinghy wheels you can enter on the left side of the beach as
you face it. Make sure to drag the dinghy high on the beach. We simply
anchored our dinghy off the shore (understanding tidal moves first). No
problems.

It
is always wise when leaving your dinghy ashore to bring it well above
the high tide line, lock the motor and the boat whenever possible.

 SV VINGATHOR

Dino and Maja

dino and maja

We
are Dino (Captain and boat yoga master) and Maja (first mate/Admiral
when needed and a self-proclaimed galley goddess), a Slovenian couple
from sailing yacht Vingathor - a Tayana 42 Vancouver.

We
owned different boats all our lives and are always happiest at sea. We
have been dreaming of crystal-clear waters, (sometimes not so) gentle
breezes, and stunning sunsets.

Three
years ago, when winters in Europe got too much to handle, we decided to
buy a sailboat in La Paz, Mexico and set on a journey to find the best
wind, chrystal clear water, interesting people, amazing food, music and
cocktails.

Since
then we have sailed through Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama.
We crossed the Panama Canal last year and visited San Andres,
Providencia, Cayman Islands and Cuba.

We are currently in Isla Mujeres, Mexico on our way to Guatemala for hurricane season.

As it comes to next season plans, we are unsure which way the wind will take us.

If you see us somewhere feel free to stop and say hi, there is always plenty of food and drinks on board!

17)  SAFETY ALERT:

DENGUE FEVER ON THE RISE IN PANAMA

MOSQUITO

Dengue
fever is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female
mosquitoes, primarily the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

BE AWARE: DENGUE FEVER ON THE RISE IN PANAMA

 The
Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) in Panama
confirms 2,745 accumulated cases of Dengue throughout the country.
The regions with the most positive cases are: Panama Metro with 612;
Panamá Oeste with 456, Colón with 311, Chiriquí with 273 and Panama Este
with 332.

Caution in San Blas

Higher
than usual dengue fever reported, approximately 1% of the population
with symptomatic dengue (with often a 1:4 ratio of symptomatic to
asymptomatic, it could be over 5% of the population is capable of
spreading dengue). Outer islands with less bugs safer than those close
to the coast, use bug spray, be extra careful near sunrise and sunset,
etc.
https://www.minsa.gob.pa/noticia/minsa-reitera-la-poblacion-eliminar-criaderos-de-mosquitos-para-evitar-mas-casos-de-dengue-0

The
World Health Organization cautions people to know that Dengue is a
viral, mosquito borne infection most common in tropical and sub-tropical
climates worldwide, mostly in urban and semi-urban areas.  Dengue
Fever symptoms can be mild to sever or even fatal.  Dengue is most
often treated with pain medication.

The
best way to avoid getting Dengue is to not get bitten by mosquitos.
Mosquitos are most active in the morning and in the
afternoon/early evening when the sun is on the horizon.
Thankfully, most people that get infected with Dengue do not have
symptoms.  However, people infected more than once get symptoms
progressively more severe.

Symptoms

Most
people with dengue have mild or no symptoms and will get better in 1–2
weeks. Rarely, dengue can be severe and lead to death.

If symptoms occur, they usually begin 4–10 days after infection and last for 2–7 days. Symptoms may include:

  • high fever (40°C/104°F)
  • severe headache
  • pain behind the eyes
  • muscle and joint pains
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • swollen glands
  • rash.

Individuals who are infected for the second time are at greater risk of severe dengue.

Severe dengue symptoms often come after the fever has gone away:

  • severe abdominal pain
  • persistent vomiting
  • rapid breathing
  • bleeding gums or nose
  • fatigue
  • restlessness
  • blood in vomit or stool
  • being very thirsty
  • pale and cold skin
  • feeling weak.

People with these severe symptoms should get care right away.

After recovery, people who have had dengue may feel tired for several weeks.

HURRICANE SEASON 2024

La Niña suppresses hurricane activity in the central and eastern Pacific basins, and enhances it in the Atlantic basin

La Niña suppresses hurricane activity in the central and eastern Pacific basins, and enhances it in the Atlantic basin

Panama
Posse vessels are beginning to have more and more discussions about
Hurricane strategies where they want their vessel and crew to be come
hurricane season.  Some vessels are heading up the coast from
Panama and parts in between towards Mexico.  Others are heading
south along the coast to Pacific Costa Rica and Panama.  While
others still are on the Caribbean side of the route making their way to
their 'spot' in Colombia - north to Rio Dulce and further north - or
sail to Grenada / ABC's. We are going to discuss the Pacific in this
segment.

There are, of course, several options to consider.

We’ll touch on these in one of the upcoming weekly LINE calls but just as a baseline here is some info.

Please take all of this with a grain of salt.

Pacific Hurricane Strategies run the gamut with some general markers for you to ponder.

HISTORIC HURRICANE TRACK

Historic hurricane paths

On
the Pacific Coast of the Panama Posse Route there are many options for
Hurricane season.  Each with different pros and cons to consider.
In general, between June and November, the further south or north
you go there is less to no change of a hurricane.  However,
lightening becomes more of a real risk the further south you go.

SOUTHERN  ZONE

ECUADOR

  • Puerto Amistad Marina

PANAMA on the Pacific side:

  • Vista Mar Marina
  • Buenaventura Marina
  • Boca Chica ( near working dock )
  • La Playita Marina
  • Flamenco Marina

COSTA RICA

  • Golfito Marina Village
  • Banana Bay Marina
  • Marina Pez Vela
  • Marina Papagayo

*customs issues can be ameliorated with a bond

(no hurricanes, yes lighting strikes except for Marina Papagayo no strikes )

NICARAGUA

  • Marina Puesta del Sol

(no hurricanes, yes lighting strikes)

EL SALVADOR

  • Bill & Jean’s Moorings
  • Marina Bahia del Sol

(no hurricanes, yes lighting strikes)

CENTRAL  ZONE

Tehuntapec, MX is the area where the hurricanes usually originate from on their path north .

Southern Mexico

  • Marina Chiapas (no hurricanes, no recent strikes)

NORTHERN ZONE

Central to Northern Pacific Mexico &Sea of Cortez

All
Mexican marinas on the Pacific Side except for Ensaenda and Puerto
Peñasco in the Sea of Cortez are in the bona-fide Hurricane Zone and
vessels also occasionally suffer from lightning strikes.

 SY INVICTUS

  Jeff & Lyndsey

He left me all alone (almost) in Costa Rica

I
have lived in Costa Rica for 22 years and owned the first charter
catamaran business on the Gold coast here.  I currently own the
Costa Rica Sailing Center that we started on the beach in Playa Potrero
almost 10 years ago.

In
2021 my fiance, Lyndsey, and I purchased Invictus a 60’ power catamaran
in Jupiter, Florida.  This cat was built with the intention to be a
sailing catamaran and is completely rigged and ready to go minus the
mast, boom and sails.  Our intention upon purchase was to finish
her capability to sail.  Although we are sailors at heart, we
quickly realized the ease and efficiency of running this boat as a
powercat.  We have been running surf and dive charters with
Invictus for the last couple of years here on the Pacific side of Coast
Rica for the last few years.  We leave for Panama in about 10 days
to haul out for bottom paint and maintenance, and then hope to do some
more exploration of this beautiful part of the world.

Thats about it for now.

Agua Verde Anchorage is a great refuge from wind in the Sea

Bahia
Agua Verde is a lobate bay located on the north side of Punta San
Marcial. The bay faces northeast, it is beautifully protected from wind
and swell from the south and is very popular during the dry season. If a
northerly is blowing the anchorage behind the islets at the foot of
Punta San Pascal provides reasonable shelter for two or three boats.

The
dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches and aquamarine water make Bahia Agua
Dulce a stunning anchorage. There is some panga traffic to and from the
small settlement on the south side of the bay but there is plenty of
room to anchor further away if it is bothersome.

Anchorage

Anchor
at the northern end of the bay close to the sand spit in 10.5m on
shelly sand with good holding. At the southern end of the bay pangas
anchor off the settlement west of Pyramid Rocks but there plenty of
space to drop the pick in 5-10m on sand. Chose your beach to dinghy
ashore depending where the waves are breaking.

Facilities

The
settlement has a couple of tiendas (small shop) for basic needs.
Snorkeling around the reefs and islets at the foot of Punta San Pascal
is excellent and diving the walls of Roca Solitaria is remarkable.

Agua Verde is known for spectacular turquoise water.

Agua Verde
is a nursery for many different species of marine life in the Sea of
Cortez.  Here baitfish cool off in the shadow of our hull.

Meeting summary for OCEAN POSSE – & Archer Power Solutions

KINGFISHER AC

Quick recap

The
meeting primarily focused on the technical aspects of a 12-volt system,
with discussions about its efficiency, cost, and specifics. The team
also introduced a new air conditioner system, King Fisher, and discussed
their current locations and upcoming plans. Later, Tom and Mark
introduced a fully DC powered marine air conditioner system,
highlighting its features and efficiency. The conversation ended with a
discussion about the benefits of a variable speed compressor and
concerns about the unit’s installation and performance.

Technical Aspects of 12-Volt System and New AC System

The
meeting primarily focused on the technical aspects of a 12-volt system.
Archer clarified its efficiency and cost, and suggested signing up for
their email list for updates. The team also discussed the specifics of
the system, including the need for a continuously rated pump and the
potential use of existing AC pumps. Chris raised a question about power
draw from the water pump, with the team noting the need for a dedicated
12-volt pump. Later in the meeting, the team introduced a new air
conditioner system, King Fisher. They also discussed their current
locations and upcoming plans, including a journey across the Pacific to
Marquesas

12 V DC Powered Marine Air Conditioner

Tom
and Mark discussed the latest version of their marine air conditioner,
which is fully DC powered and operates at 12 volts. They emphasized its
features such as an all-plastic drain pan for condensation, a removable
drain pan, and a number of features to enhance its efficiency. Tom noted
that the system incorporates an electronic expansion valve and a
variable speed, fully DC powered compressor for optimization and
efficiency. They also highlighted the unit’s serviceability and its
compact electronics box with two to four connections, DC power, and a
fully adjustable blower port. The new version of the system aims to run
without generators or backup power other than a solar system, reducing
power load on the battery bank and extending run times. Archer then
discussed the unit’s design and efficiency, emphasizing its ability to
cool specific areas on a boat, and demonstrated the unit’s user
interface.

Variable Speed Compressor and New Fan Unit Discussion

Archer
discussed the benefits of a variable speed compressor for energy
efficiency. He demonstrated its usage, highlighting its ability to
maintain a 20-25 degree Fahrenheit difference between incoming seawater
temperature and the air coming out. Archer also introduced a new fan
unit with three speed levels and a sleep timer function. He clarified
that the unit’s cooling and humidity removal capabilities depend on the
volume of air it needs to cool. Chad raised concerns about the unit’s
installation and performance, suggesting potential improvements for
future models. The conversation ended with an open invitation for
further questions via email or phone and a special discount for this
5000 BTU unit for PP .

19)  MUST SEE:

       TULUM 🇲🇽

YEAH YOU CAN ANCHOR THERE !

Tulum
is the site of a Mayan walled city which served as a major port for
Cuba, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. These magnificent ruins are
situated on 40foot tall cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatán
Peninsula. The site might have been called Zama, meaning City of Dawn,
because it faces the sunrise.

Tulum
was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya at its
height between the 13th and 15th centuries.  Tulum managed to
survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying what is now
Mexico .

Anchorage off of Tulum.

Tulum
is one of the best-preserved coastal Mayan sites and you can see it
from your own vessel.  Anchor just south or to the north of Tulum.
The ideal conditions for this day anchorage are: noon, non cloudy,
not too windy.  Accessing the anchorage requires entering a path
though a reef.  This is best for vessels that draw less than 6
feet.  The bottom is compacted sand.

Anchorage off of Tulum.

Anchorage off of Tulum.

Tulum’s
massive wall was thick and 1,300 ft long parallel to the sea.
This would have taken an enormous amount of energy and time to
build, which shows how important defense was to the people of Tulum. On
the southwest and northwest corners there are watch towers demonstrating
a well defended city.

Tulum is considered by archeological experts one of the most well-known fortified sites of the Mayan Civilization

aerial video of the Tulum archeological site.

Since
Tulum had access to both land and sea trade routes it was an important
trade hub, especially for volcanic glass called obsidian used for tools,
decorative objects.  Obsidian was also made into a type of sword
with obsidian blades mounted in a wooden body called a macuahuitl.
This weapon could inflict terrible injuries, combining the sharp
cutting edge of an obsidian blade with the ragged cut of a serrated
weapon.

The
Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole near the center of
Lighthouse Reef in Belize. The hole is over 1,000 ft in diameter and ~
400 ft  deep. It was formed during several phases of glaciation
when sea levels were much lower. Analysis shows that formation took
place between 153,000 to 15,000 years ago.
