The
altitude of the star can be measured using the hand stretched out in
front of the eyes, with shoulders squared. Different configurations of
the hand (a fist, a span, two fingers, three fingers) can be calibrated
to distances in the sky.

Nov 28, 2021 PANAMA POSSE FLEET UPDATE
1) TURKS AND CAICOS 🇹🇨
As a tropical Atlantic archipelago, the Turks and Caicos has historically had a past with pirates and privateers.
One
of the greatest remnants of piracy in the Turks and Caicos is in fact
it’s country name, which translates to Pirate Islands, as it’s
derived from the term Turks, which was a synonym for pirates in previous centuries, and cayo hico, a version of the indigenous Taino people’s name for an archipelago or island chain.
During much of the ‘golden age of piracy’, from about the mid-1600s to mid-1700s, pirates operated and had bases in the Turks and Caicos.
It’s very likely that they operate out of Parrot Cay, Pine Cay, Dellis Cay and Fort George Cay due to the sources of fresh water than can be found in small ponds. A common trait throughout human history is that a

6 ) LANDSAT 9 has launched
September 27, 2021 Landsat
9 is an Earth observation satellite launched on 27 September 2021 from
Space Launch Complex-3E at Vandenberg Space Force Base on an Atlas V 401
launch vehicle. NASA is in charge of building, launching, and
testing the satellite, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS)
operates the satellite, and manages and distributes the data archive.
It will be the ninth satellite in the Landsat program.
The
first image collected by Landsat 9, on Oct. 31, 2021, shows remote
coastal islands and inlets of the Kimberly region of Western Australia.
In the top middle section of the image, the Mitchell River carves
through sandstone, while to the left Bigge Island and the Coronation
Islands stand out in the Indian Ocean.
“The
data and images from Landsat 9 are expanding our capability to see how
Earth has changed over decades,” Karen St. Germain, director of NASA’s
Earth Science Division, said in the same statement. “In a changing
climate, continuous and free access to Landsat data, and the other data
in NASA’s Earth observing fleet, helps data users, including city
planners, farmers and scientists, plan for the future.”
In the case of the Panama Posse helps us navigate saver !
Landsat
9 carries two main instruments: the Operational Land Imager 2 (OLI-2),
which detects visible, near-infrared, and shortwave-infrared light in
nine wavelengths, and the Thermal Infrared Sensor 2 (TIRS-2), which
detects thermal radiation in two wavelengths used to measure Earth’s
surface temperatures. Together the instruments can provide users with
essential information about crop health, irrigation use, water quality,
wildfire severity, deforestation, glacial retreat, and urban expansion,
especially when put in the context of the long Landsat data record.
The
Panama Posse has over 150 gigs of Satellite Images for navigation
available for download – many have been sourced thanks to Landsat and
months of work by Panama Posse participants such as Rob on Avant.

12) MAKE A DIFFERENCE
HELP CORAL REEFS
ADVENTURE SCIENTISTS AND UNIVERSITY OF GUADALAJARA TO CONDUCT MEXICAN CORAL REEF STUDIES WITH PANAMA POSSE VOLUNTEERS
Adventure
Scientists is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports
scientists through the planning and execution of large-scale data
collection projects for scientific partners around the world. They
mobilize skilled adventure volunteers—hikers, sailors, skiers, divers,
and more—who operate on any scale from almost anywhere on Earth to
collect high-quality scientific data. This empowers scientists to think
bigger and access the data, public support, and funding they need to
achieve impact. Adventure Scientists’ goal is to accelerate
environmental and human health solutions.
Mexican Coral Reefs Project Information
Why:
Mexico’s Pacific Coast is harbor to some of the world’s most biodiverse
coral reefs. They support fishes, sharks, turtles, and other marine
life. They also buffer the coastline from intense storms and provide
livelihoods from fishing and tourism. Yet these reefs are imperiled by
ocean acidification, more frequent and powerful storms due to climate
change, and damage from tourism.
Impact:
Adventure Scientists is recruiting experienced diver volunteers to
provide Universidad de Guadalajara’s Dr. Paola Rodríguez-Troncoso and
Dr. Amílcar Cupul Magaña with critical data to understand how climate
change and human pressure are impacting coral communities. The project
will provide hard data to government partners to support policy
recommendations that can protect these unique reefs into the future.
Who:
Eligible volunteers are experienced, conservation-minded divers with
access to boats who can commit to at least three dives within a year
along the Mexican Pacific coast in the Puerto Vallarta region.
Volunteers must provide their own dive equipment and have a minimum of
25 logged dives if a PADI certified open water diver, 15 if PADI
advanced open water diver, and 10 dives if they are a NAUI certified
advanced open water diver.
What:
At each field site, dive teams will swim five different 25-meter-long
belt transects parallel to the coast. Teams will swim each of the five
transects three times to:
Identify fish species, size, and ratio of adults to juveniles
Count abundance of sea urchin, sea stars, sea cucumbers, etc.
Categorize different coral types
Measure contour of seafloor
Where:
Field sites are predetermined (GPS coordinates provided) and no deeper
than ~12 meters. See the map on the project page for dive locations.
Are
you interested in contributing to the protection of coral ecosystems on
the Mexican Pacific Coast? To learn how you can get involved in this,
and other Adventure Scientists projects, please join Founder/Executive
Director, Gregg Treinish, and University of Guadalajara scientists, Dr.
Paola Rodríguez-Troncoso and Dr. Amílcar Cupul Magaña, at 9 am, December
5th
For
qualified, registered divers interested in volunteering, the seminar
will be followed by an in-person field training, held exclusively for
Panama Posse affiliates, on December 6th beginning at 8 am. To learn
more and apply to volunteer:

18) PANAMA POSSE CONVOYS
These
violent incidents appear to be executed by “part-time pirates”,
fisherman who organize on an ad hoc basis and seize targets of
opportunity in the absence of effective law enforcement. They do
not target larger commercial vessels at this time.
Geographically,
the Honduran and Nicaraguan east coasts do not provide harbor for
larger vessels and the national navies are small and poorly equipped to
deal with the issue, as they are small forces primarily designed for
dealing with coastal and riverine security. The naval forces are
under-resourced.
As
the incidents normally occur well offshore, often between 75 and 125
miles from land, they are beyond VHF radio range from shore bases, and
in any case it is believed the relevant navies do not effectively
maintain a 24/7 radio watch. It is uncertain what other illegal
activities these part time pirates may engage in.
While
these areas are variously within the territorial waters or exclusive
economic zones of Colombia, Guatemala, or Honduras, they are not
effectively patrolled or policed by any of these states. Adding
complication to the situation, some areas including the Serranilla Bank
are disputed territories.
Security and Safety Risks Associated with the Entire Coast of Venezuela
For
westbound vessels, a transit of the Venezuelan coast from Trinidad to
the ABCs and Columbia is often undertaken. For vessels leaving
Colombia to points north, a close approach to the easternmost stretch of
the Venezuelan coast is also unavoidable. There has also been an
increase in piracy activities in the coastal waters near Trinidad,
believed to be the actions of Venezuelan smugglers.
