1) REPORT FROM COSTA RICA – NICOYA PENINSULA Entry into highest wind recorded Contest
Hola! Gargoyle has officially entered Papagayo zone as we’ve spent the past two days beating our way up from the Gulf of Nicoya to our current anchorage off Playa Flamingo. 3
37 knots yesterday followed by a few hours of 42 knot winds made for a fun sail fully reefed along this sun-kissed coast.
Our
Norwegian family is loving the challenge and as Norwegians think
sitting on the bow with 40 knots on the nose “refreshing”. Marina
Papagayo is now just a short hop away so we’ll spend another few nights
on the hook before we duck into the marina on Monday. Cheers everyone
and enjoy this amazing season!

Fillettes are amazing with just olive oil and Montreal steak
seasoning. Flavor and texture both very reminiscent of a ribeye
steak. Season like you would red meat.

4) ANTON VALLEY PANAMA
The
town is located in the flat wide caldera of the 6 km wide El Valle
volcano that is inactive; there is evidence that it erupted as recently
as about 300,000 years ago Because of its elevation (600 m), it is
cooler than the Panamanian lowlands.
Natural
attractions near El Valle include the Chorro El Macho waterfall, Las
Mozas waterfall, the “square” trees behind Hotel Campestre, and a group
of small thermal pools of mineralized water that varies in color
depending on the specific minerals present at a given moment
The ear extinct Panamanian Golden Frog lives in the area This
species’ skin is toxic in the wild; glands on the skin produce
tetrodotoxin and a unique compound called zetekitoxin. The skin of a
single Panamanian golden frog contains enough toxins to kill 1,200 mice.
Its vibrant, yellow color is aposematic, meaning it warns potential
predators of its toxicity.
Danza
de los Diablitos (The Dance of the Little Devils) is a three-day annual
festival, held December 31 through January 2 by the Boruca people, an
indigenous people in Costa Rica. The male participants of the tribe
perform a ritual dance re-enacting the Spanish conquest wearing
elaborate costumes.
The
Fiesta de los Diablitos is an alternate history of Spanish conquest.
Boruca villagers don elaborate costumes and stage mock battles with a
“bull” that represents Spanish colonists. Throughout the ceremony the
Boruca drink chica, a traditional fermented corn beverage. Village
elders lead the procession.

On the final day of the ceremony, the Boruca triumph over the bull, which is then lit on fire. An all-night celebration ensues.
The multi-day event draws over 2,500 villagers and several hundred visitors.

8) DESTINATION JAMAICA
Jamaica and the “defintion of Patois”
If
you should look up the official definition of patois, it will state
something to the effect of being a spoken, but non-standard language,
and in all truth, that is exactly what it is. Although patois is widely
spoken in Jamaica, English is the official and national language of the
island.
That
may be a surprise to some, who have only been able to identify
Jamaicans, who have crossed their paths, by recognizing the speech of
this unique language, known as patois.

Jamaica Yacht Club was formed in 1884 by a group of enthusiastic
sailors. On the 29th of November 1889, the Club was granted a Royal
Charter by Queen Victoria following a visit by Prince Edward, then the
Prince of Wales, who later became Edward VII. Until 1962, when Jamaica
became an independent nation within the Commonwealth, the Commodores
were all Governors of Jamaica, whether or not they were yachtsmen. In
1963 the Commodore was chosen for the first time from the membership of
the Club.
