FLEET UPDATE 2019-03-09
1) Bahia Balena, Costa Rica
Octopus Garden update in Bahia Balena CR - we’ve stayed in this beautiful place over a week now bouncing between the south anchorage (town of Tambor) and north anchorage (beach of your dreams). It’s too nice here to leave. Everything you need, nothing you don’t. Store, bar, restaurants, taxi to the little town. Really enjoyed eating casada de pescado at Christina’s, pizza at Henry’s and the beach volleyball tournament

KLICKITAT II3) Las Perlas, Panama
Here we are in Las Perlas and still loving it.
Since we got back from Europe we have been trying to decide where to go next! Panama really is a crossroads but having come from the north and already crossed the Pacific from the west it leaves east into the Caribbean or the south down the west coast of South America. Strong easterly trade winds make sailing in the southern Caribbean difficult before the end of March and then the hurricane season kicks in at the beginning of June, leaving us only couple of months to enjoy cruising there. We kicked around the idea of sailing south down to Equador but beating against the SE trades and the Humbolt Current did not really appeal and the few people we know who have been there were not terribly enthusiastic about it. So after mucho deliberation we have decided to stay here on the Pacific coast of Panama for the next few months . . . Da . . . Daaa!
There were a couple of other factors which weighed in: firstly we thought we’d set up shop doing BnB/sailing tours on the boat. Contadora is easily accessible from Panama City and Islas Las Perlas is a beautiful archipelago with plenty of sheltered bays for kayaking and beachcombing and reefs for snorkeling and fishing; great for 4-5 days tours. We figured it would be fun to show people our lifestyle, it motivates us to explore more of the islands and it will replenish our dwindling boat fund. We’ve had four groups of guests this month, it’s been a pleasure having them on board so it’s all going well so far.
We are also keen to get involved in cleaning up the islands beaches in some way. Although the beaches look pristine most of them have plastic debris scattered along the high tide line. Exposed to sunlight the plastic breaks down into smaller plastic particles which are washed back out to sea and are easily ingested by various forms of marine life. The best way to break this cycle is to stop putting plastic into the oceans, the next best way is to remove the plastic when it is trapped on the beach. Here endeth the lesson!
We are trying to work out a system to remove all existing plastics from the beaches and dispose of it via recycling and/or landfill, and to write a proposal in order to secure the necessary funding to make it happen. To scope out the project we cleaned up 50m of beach on the west side of Isla Mogo Mogo. It took four very hot and sweaty man hours and we collected about 1m3 of plastic. With over 8000m of beach distributed around 200 islands, this is no mean feat! What our role in all this might be we don’t know, perhaps we’ll combine sailing tours with plastic collection so you can come and have a holiday in paradise and feel good about contributing to cleaning up marine plastic. If you have any suggestions or ideas please get in touch – we’d love to hear from you.
Isla Contadora is a great little island to base ourselves at. It is the playground of the uber-rich and famous from Panama City who occasionally visit their mansions but tend to stay behind closed gates. Most of the other houses are owned by expats who live here semi-permanently or are small hotels or BnBs. A trickle of tourists come and go on the daily ferry from the City and at weekends a flotilla of gleaming white motor launches arrives and the anchorage is transformed; tents scattered on the beach, throbbing music, and jetskis zapping about.
The tiki bar at the Mar y Oro hotel on the beach has a happy hour and we have met quite a few of the locals and tourists – it’s getting to be quite sociable. On Saturday evenings Neil has been playing keyboards with John, a local guitarist, in the hotel restaurant. They play laid back blues and attract a bit of a crowd – it’s good fun.
A couple of weeks ago the World ARC rally arrived in the anchorage. This is a group of some twenty five yachts that are cruising around the world together over a period of about thirteen months. They started in St. Lucia in the Caribbean in November, have just come through the Canal and gathered in Contadora to start Leg #3 – Panama to Galapagos. Distant Drummer was suddenly surrounded by yachts, the radio buzzed with British and other European accents and the beach was crowded with dinghies. It was great to meet some other yachties and hear their tales from Caribbean shores.
They only stayed for a couple of days then it was time to move on (they move a bit faster than we do!) We puttered amongst them in the dinghy as they gathered at the start line for the departure to Galapagos. It was quite a spectacle with their brightly coloured spinnakers raised to catch the light northerly breeze. As they sailed over the horizon we listened to their chatter on the radio and breathed a sigh of relief to be living life in the slow lane.
Although we have been here for a couple of months now we are still exploring islands we haven’t visited yet. Isla Pacheca is a small island with a swathe of beautiful white sand beach and amazing clear turquoise water. We took a short walk in land looking for coconuts and stumbled upon a group of green-footed boobies nesting on the ground. They are totally unafraid of humans and sat on their nests making a croaky hissing sound to warn us to keep away. A half grown chick was strutting around showing off it’s fluffy white downy plumage, it was a treat to watch.
Isla Saboga is a large island which lies just to the west of Contadora and supplies the power and the workforce to its more glamorous sister. We went over to have a look around and to meet Alex, Yaiza and Jacob who run a campsite and sailing school there. One of their other projects is collecting garbage from the beach. They recycle the tins and glass but most of the plastic they currently burn. They have been experimenting with melting different types of plastic at specific temperatures to make plastic bricks for building construction but it is difficult to do without an oven to maintain an accurate temperature. It was interesting to hear about their experience and hopefully we can work together with them in the future.
The only downside of our Contadora “paradise” is the very limited water supply on the island so next week we will head back to Panama City to fill our water tanks. While we are there it will also be Carnival which is a major holiday in Central and South America. For four days before Lent people are celebrating in the street with parades, street parties, music, dance and feasting. It should be lots of fun!

5) Red Frog Marina, Bocas de Toros, Panama
We are now picking our way through the Trade Winds in the Caribbean but would like to let everyone know about Red Frog Marina in Bocas Las Toros on the Caribbean side of Panama. Truly a great find! A beautiful and protected location, reasonably priced considering La Playita and Shelter Cove. Friendly staff and access to all the resort amenities.... restrauants, edgeless pool, electric carts to take you around, and great WiFi! All at a discount ! We then spent a couple of weeks on Isla Providencia with some great cruisers and are now discovering Roatan while waiting for the Trades to die down.

6) Chiapas, MX
Marina Chiapas buses: Walking up the exit from the marina to the main road, after maybe a tenth of a mile, you cross the road and you can catch one of the Combi buses (vans) going into the main town of Tapachula to the left. The van has a dolphin on the side and goes by the main airport and the first stop in town is the Sam’s Club. Next is Walmart with the Home Depot across the street. The cost of the van is 25 pesos. It’s about a half hour to Walmart. You pay when you exit the van.
In the Walmart mall, there are other shops like optical shops, shoes, GNC, etc. and a little food court. To get back home, just catch a van going the other way.

7) Marina Ixtapa, MX IXTAPA update. The dredging of the main channel is finished. There are no longer restrictions on entry times. We saw the dredger working the sides.
The tide chart for our arrival predicted a +.5’ tide and with our 7’ draft we saw 1.1’ under the keel just after the outer entrance.
While this was the only ‘shallow’ place, be sure to consult the tide chart when there are much larger tidal swings.

2) Puesta del Sol Marina, Nicaragua
Nicaragua is very special to us. We have been traveling to Northern Nicaragua to surf for the past 4 years. The first time I arrived in Aposentillo to my friends' surf camp, I fell in love with the people, the tranquility, the beauty, the beaches and the surf. We went on a boat trip in the estuary and as we passed Puesta del Sol Marina I said "someday I'm gonna bring my boat here" and four years later we made good on that promise.
Puesta del Sol is worth the stop. Nicaragua has some big city problems but out at the beach, an hour away from the nearest city, you would never know, it's muy tranquilo.
The entrance to the estuary has plenty of water but the channel is narrow and winding and some of the channel markers have gone astray so be sure to arrive during daylight. Try to email Juanita at the marina at least two or three days ahead of time if possible. When you approach the channel hail the marina on the VHF it may take a while to get a response. It's a pretty sleepy operation. A lot of the marina crew does double duty as security and maintenance staff as well. Either way you will be met at the dock with extra hands to help you tie the lines. Port Captain, Immigration and Customs come to the marina for a very easy check in... It's all pretty casual. They don't get a ton of cruisers so just be sure to double check that all the passports have been stamped and name of vessel is correct, etc. Juanita speaks English and will stand by to help with any questions or clarification.
The marina facilities are beautiful and well maintained. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Juanita manages the marina and hotel and she is the most wonderful lady. The marina showers are inside the main building behind the office. The restaurant serves a variety of delicious food. It closes as 6pm. The bar overlooking the estuary is open later. Be sure to go get your complimentary welcome drink (Toña Beer or Rum and Coke). There is a self service laundry room behind the main building. It takes US quarters. There is 24 hour security. The wifi was complimentary when we were there. Make sure to walk out to the Beach Palapa. You will probably have it all to yourselves. You can bring your own snacks and swim in the beautiful infinity pool overlooking the ocean. The security guard has a fridge full of cold beers and sodas and you can charge them to your marina account. The tennis courts are fun if you have your own gear. One of the best things about Marina Puesta del Sol is the well stocked veggie truck that makes deliveries straight to the marina on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Just be sure to tell Juanita you would like to get veggies and she will tell the security guard to flag down the veggie truck as it comes through town. It usually comes between 11:30 am and 1pm. Some days a little later. You know... Nica Time.
Within walking distance of the Marina... If you go right just outside the marina gate on the main road towards the fishing village you will see a tiendas on the right just across from the school. It's owned by an American expat named Bodhi. He can also arrange boat trips for fishing or checking out some of the many surf breaks near by. The tienda is well stocked and he can order anything in from chinendega if you have a few days to wait. He also has horses for riding on the beach and surfboards for rent. Also in the fishing village are Joe's hostal serving cheap local food and a small bar across from the panga landing with pool tables and a juke box. Dirt floors, very local flavor. If you go straight out of the marina gate on the main road first on your right is a well stocked tienda. Next on the right is Badaboom hostal, great for snacks and drinks at somewhat local prices. Right next to Badaboom is Tanya's Fritanga (or Nica style BBQ). Tanja sets up tables in her back patio and is open most nights. The food is delicious, cheap and filling. Bring a to go container for leftovers. Further up the road on the left is Pedro's. He's got WiFi and can fix cell phones, set you up with a sim card. The breakfast is yummy and the smoothies are so good. He also rents motos and bicycles that have surfboard racks. For local entertainment try to catch a baseball, kickball or soccer game on Sundays at the field across the school in Aserradores or down the road in Manzanillo. Also check out Badaboom Hostal for weekend festivities. While we were there they had a new years party, bocce ball tournaments, volleyball tournaments and what is best described as Nica Style Highland games with pig wrestling where the prize is the pig you wrestle, and pole climbing where you work as a team to get the bottle of rum at the top of a slippery telephone pole. Las Dunas beach resort has salsa night on Thursdays.
Further afield but worth the effort... If you get yourself a moto or a car it opens up so many possibilities. A nearby surf spot is at Playa Aposentillo. You will meet friendly locals and expats on the beach and the waves are good for learning or longboarding. At Nahualapa Bay the waves are a little bigger but the rides are longer. Perfect for longboarding on a small day. After surfing spend an afternoon relaxing at Tapas and Surf. Good food, good drinks, good vibes. If you crave carbs and good drinks head up the hill to Al Cielo. Owned by two French guys, they make awesome pizza, pasta, infused rum drinks and keep a well stocked wine cellar. If you ask nicely, they will even send you home with fresh french bread right out of the oven. The views are spectacular so make sure to get there to watch the sunset.
Chinendega is an easy 45 minute ride by car. Longer but much cheaper on the chicken bus, ask Juanita about bus times. You can get most anything you need there. There is a Maxi Pali and for imported grocery items, La Colonia. There is a municipal market where you can score on prices but even the locals keep close tabs on their wallets here. The banks are all on the same intersection in middle of town and if you are looking for a yummy local lunch spot, try La Parrillada. Buffet style, cheap and delicious. Just outside of Chinendega is Flor de Caña Rum Distillery. They do a great tour for $10 USD per person. And if you have time, try to catch a baseball game at the stadium. It's a hoot and you can get box seats where the bartender comes to you for $15 USD. The most fun game I've been to. If you are up for a hike and some adventure, head to Leon and try volcano boarding on Cerro Negro Volcano. Leon also has a french bakery and the mojitos at Bigfoot hostal are delicious. The main plaza in Leon is beautiful and you can go up to the roof of the white church for some awesome rooftop photos.
If you are into volunteering, there are definitely opportunities. We threw a Christmas party for the kids at the school in Aserradores. There is an organization called Waves of Hope that does a ton of work with the local schools. Or just bring a trash bag with you and do a beach clean when you go surfing.
A few last things. The sailing off the coast of Nicaragua has been some of the most pleasant and enjoyable we have had since, well since leaving California. Steady fresh breezes, comfortable wind angles, clear blue water. We waited for good weather windows and were rewarded with really fun passages. We even snuck out of the marina to go booze cruising with friends at sunset a few times because the sailing was that good.
We have since moved on to Costa Rica, but will definitely returning to Nicaragua for mas olas, amigos, y Toña time!

Want to give a shout out to two local businesses and their proprietor's. Pariso Escondido in the playa Norte anchorage of Isle Grande is owned by Juan, his family started in 1950's. He was a great host and makes everyone feel at home in short order "Tequila" Tina was great as well. Good seafood under the palapa great staff. They hosted our daughters 15th B day party got us a great cake and had great zarendiado snapper. It's a easy water taxi ride to the town and a great surf spot at playa Linda. Juan also introduced us to the Verboonen's a Las Gatas family who have had restaurants on the playa for multiple generations. Hiram is a pro Mexican surfer as well as his daughter Pamela. They were nice enough to take our daughter Violet surfing on multiple occasions. Hiram and His wife Erika were wonderful hosts. Their families have several restaurants at Las Gatas beach. We ate at Hirams family restaurant "Che Arnoldo" without a doubt this is the best seafood we have had in Mexico and possibly some of the best seafood ever. Unique presentation and dishes in a amazing setting. Can't recommend it enough great stuff!!
La India Huatulco, MX
We hoped to stop in Puerto Angel but the harbor is more or less filled with panga moorings and the open areas are all exposed to the swell. We continued on to La India which we had not been in for 15 years. we were happy to find it in the same state as when we had left. The reefs are buoyed off to keep people from anchoring on but it is still a great spot to sit out the weather in the gulf on flat super clear clean water. A bow stern is advised and there is room for several boats. The tourist boats fill it up in the day but keep crew on board so not a problem.
Chiapas, MX
Had a great visit loved the Puebla Madera and Tapalachula. This is a true big city and very easy ride from the marina. Can get pretty much whatever you want or need, a whole city block of dentists.
Bahia Del Sol, El Salvador
Nice people, great spot to work on the boat in flat water. Would not approach the bar here in anything other than mild conditions. The northern and southern options to hold over make a foul or questionable wx crossing here unnecessary.
Off to points south soon.

Did the Huatulco inland waterfalls and old coffee farm tour with Enrique Pinacho's crew and enjoyed it enormously. A few notes to add tho. Tour was in a taxi, no big deal to us, but it might mater to you. Coffee farm does not appear to be really active with coffee, but they make a killer Tamarindo pork! The waterfalls we're super fun! Good day away from the boat before we jump on a four day passage!

8) Chiapas, MX
We just arrived outside Chiapas, drifting until the marina opens to give us a slip. Dep Acapulco 0945 23Feb and sailed/drifted until we arrived off Puerto Angel the night of 26Feb. Still no wind on the 27th, but we continued sailing very slowly toward Chiapas until we snagged a poly long-line at approx 15-30.7N 96-08.5W. Fortunately, we weren’t motoring at the time. The fishermen came up in their boat and were able to cut the line, remove it from the prop and tie it back together. We started the engine and headed toward Chiapas a little faster.
We came across several more long-lines in the next 5-10 miles. I think the best strategy is to look for the flag at the end of the line, then head directly toward the flag until you can determine which side of the flag the line is going and then steer around the correct side of the flag. You can see the flag from a couple miles away. You cannot count on the fishermen being anywhere close to the line. Three times they were - once, they unhooked us, the next guy pushed two floats together to drop the line enough for us to pass and the third guy just watched us go over the line without giving us any direction - (fortunately, the line was low enough for the boat to pass over). About three other lines were totally unmanned.
We sailed when we had wind and motored when we didn’t and took about 48 hours to cross the Tpec bay and arrive here; timing it to arrive after sunrise. The forecast was mostly accurate. When the wind came up at first, it was directly astern. The beam wind didn’t start until we were close to the center.
We sailed a straight line from Puerto Angel 15-35.397N 96-30.536W to 14-41.608N 92-25.497W. Doing it over, I would probably go 5nm further offshore from Angel and maybe we would have missed all those long lines. Once we arrived in Marina Chiapas and waited for the customs, Puerto de Capitanía officer, and Navy to inspect the vessel. You have to go through the inspection before checking into the marina office and going to the fuel dock. We heard that the concrete dock of the fuel dock is too far out of the water except at high tide. If the tide is low, there is a possibility that the bottom of the concrete would be above the toe rail. So we’ll need to fuel tomorrow.
We also learned that we have to travel to the Guatemalan boarder to have our TIP cancelled. About $1,000mx for that trip.
We plan to stay for at least a week and probably longer to do some touring of the area. The restaurant in the Marina is very good with a unique Piña Colada recipe with cinnamon. They also hand-make the salsa at the table with mortar and pestle.
Wi-FI in the marina is NOT good. The restaurant’s free wi-FI with Facebook check-in was very good, so we may be spending some time over there.
Fuel dock in Chiapas. I would highly recommend going at high tide. These pics were taken at high tide.

11) Panama Canal, Panama
My Panama Canal advice...FWIW....
Work with Erik Galvez ( note he is our official Panama Posse Canal Agent )
Everything was done in Panama City and it would have been easier to just go there directly but the marinas are very expensive and anchorage are rolly. Balboa Yacht Club was $40/night for nothing but a mooring ball and boat to shore service.
Now that I’ve done it and had time to reflect I think I’d do this:
Go to Panama City directly and anchor on east side of Flamenco Island. Email Erik and tell him you’re there and want Measurement the next day. Dinghy in to Flamenco Marina and check in with Port Captain and Immigration. In the same building and easy. Apply for cruising permit at Port Captains office. Can take 1-3 days (!) so it’s good to be close. Go to Playita Anchorage next morning by 7 AM for Canal Measurement and expect to wait 1-5 hours. Easy process once they show up by boat. Go back to Flamenco anchorage then to Port Captain to check on Cruisers Permit. Expect to have to come back the next day. Go explore Old City. Keep going back to port captains office until you get Prermit. Go to Vista Mar Marina for best rate in world and prepare for Canal transit. Eric

3) Acapulco, MX
We stopped in Acapulco for a short stay. We got in at sunset on a Sunday eve and planned to anchor in Acapulco Bay. When we arrived, it looked littered with moorings and it would have been tight to find room to anchor and swing. As we were deciding what to do, Vicente, a super sweet guy and friend to boaters and travelers, rolled up in his boat and told us we could take one of his 5 moorings. We were relieved as we were hesitant to anchor due to a potential foul sea floor and lack of swinging room, it was already getting dark and the area is fairly busy with traffic.
We cannot speak highly enough of Vicente. He made our stay easy and comfortable and he couldn’t be friendlier - classic Mexican hospitality. He was more than willing to help us out in anyway he could - he stayed late one eve to help us jerry can fuel from the pemex station. He is also very proud to be associated with the Panama Posse.
Acapulco was a much nicer place to visit than we had expected due to the negative press and the way it is portrayed particularly by cruisers. It is a vibrant city and culturally interesting. It is also full of super yachts and fast boats that don’t much care for the Colregs, but todo bien!

4) Ixtapa, MX
Schooner Winds of the Worlds is making slow progress towards the Panama Canal.
Due to a medical situation at home in Houston, Texas, captain / owner (I) Dan can only afford to be away from home a few days at the time.
With crew member Curtis I returned to Ixtapa, we enjoyed ourselves with a little groceries shopping, filling water bottles and finishing the day with a delightful dinner, including life music, at the Bistro Soleiado, all within walking distance from the marina. The morning of January 17 we finished paperwork at the marina office (one-stop convenience), followed by uncovering sails and brightwork and pushing off at 11:40am, assisted by helping dock hands and escorted out the harbor, until safely past the sandbar at the marina entrance.
Nice, but fairly substantial, rolling waves welcomed us back to open waters. We raised schooner, jib, stay and main sails and were underway to Acapulco with fairly benign sea and weather conditions.
The next day both alternator belts of the Detroit diesel called it quits, a two hour repair job. Due to stronger then expected currents we arrived after sunset into Acapulco Bay and, not being familiar with the local situation and the surprising choice of marinas, made fast at the nice concrete pier of the Santa Lucia marina (very cliffy waterfront).
Saturday crew member Bernardo, from Mexico City, joined us and again the morning and early afternoon (Saturday!) found us spending time dealing with formalities: both Brenda, in the marina office, and Gabriel, general support, were very professional in assisting. Filling diesel tanks at the fuel dock across the bay with a resemblance of mediteranian berthing technique did proof cumbersome, but it worked.
Onward along the coast, with some times calm sometimes breezy conditions we arrived, after two days, at the bay that holds Huatulco, harbor and marina. The marina Chahue is still off limits for drafts over 4 ft due to sanding, so we dropped anchor not far from the marina entrance, at a location beautiful location described by a fellow Panama Posse participant; thank you!! A spectacular full moon kept us company for the night.
to be continued . . . .

5) ALERT ! Caribbean, Roatan, Honduras
Sad news from last season's Panama Posse Veteran Vessel Fred Again Robert Nutall
His boat is lost on an unmarked reef
Kristin's father Robert Nuttall has had the misfortune of hitting an unmarked reef in his adventure of sailing through the small Honduras islands (he started in his trip in Vancouver). It would be tough to find someone with more experience sailing and tough to find a better man. Robert has suffered a devastating loss as his boat was his home and livelihood as he had successfully been running charters for the past couple years as his retirement. The sailboat is a write off and is uninsurable because of the location but with that being said, thankfully the crew was unharmed. Any donations would be a blessing.
His family has set up a GoFundMe Page at

FIGMENT- Marina Chahue, MX
Figment & Blessed are tied to the cement wall across from the docks in Marina Chahue. Likely will not be available during the group call so sending info at this time. Wish all a great week. Essentially, we were told when we checked to HUX on Mon the 4th, in response to the E side of main pier anchorage having no room for our boats, that we could anchor W of the main pier. We went to Bahia Tongalunda for a few days then decided we wanted to reposition because the Tpec winds were going to reach in & Blessed's owners were flying home for a week and wanted the boat located for that departure. We went to Bahia Santa Cruz. We again checked ut the E side anchorage with nothing that we felt would work. I then dropped the hook W of the main pier, north of the naval base about half way between the W shore and the Volendam which was in port at that time. The navy guys cruised by and didn't seem to have an issue. Blessed went to the cove south of the nave base and dropped the hook though the exposure of that position seemed to make it unacceptable for the duration of our/their stay.
An hour or so later we were approached by the port captains
Navy captain's patrol boat and told we needed to move. What ensued was a standoff. It went on for a couple hours. My position was we'd be happy to move so long as there was a safe place to which to move. Maintaining that position - will cooperate so long as you can show me something that will work - ended up in an unplanned discussion with the port captain - me sort of at my grubby worst - and him in his immaculate uniform. Result was he called the marina, spoke to the harbor master and we could stay so long as we acknowledged they did not have insurance to cover us in the event we had an issue with underwater objects.
I had previously been in the marina with Figment and our tender and had a good grasp of the depths - which are adequate for our 5ft draft and the tidal change. As sort of validation of our standing our ground if you will is the nave sent their patrol boat to the marina when the Tpec winds started reaching in. Where Blessed had dropped the hook was certainly untenable as it was much more exposed than the navy base.
The cement wall in the marina is subject to surge and hard on fenders and lines. And it works better for our two boats over the next week plus.
Harbor master is Arechiga - my typo
Depth at low tide saw minimum 7ft in main channel inside - deeper by the docks and the wall
At the wall now we have 11.5 ft and are about an hour after high tide

FLEET UPDATE 2019-01-31
1) Chiapas, Mexico Marina Chiapas is a bit secluded with only one restaurant that closes at 6pm. A taxi ride to Tapachula, the closest town, is $250 pesos. However, it's very pretty surrounded by mangroves, which makes for great bird watching. Plus - there are amazing sites to see in this state with the help of a tour guide. We highly recommend Miguel Angel Alvarez Davila (toursdiscoverchiapas@hotmail.com). Miguel is a federally licensed tour guide and uses only licensed tour vans which is very beneficial in getting around and with any interactions with the Federales, etc. He took us on the known "safe" road, which while longer protected us from potential problems. He and his knowledgable crew took our group (Footloose, Paradisea and Sonamara) on a safe and gorgeous adventure. Beware, there are long drives, but worth it!
We first did a day tour to nearby Chocolate Town and Izapa Ruins:
Lunch included the most delicious tamales by Senora Petra
Izapa Ruins are only an hour drive. Miguel is a novice historian with great interest in Maya Culture, so his insights are invaluable.
Then a 5 day tour to Palenque & San Cristobal: 12-hour Drive to Palenque: Here our guides Miguel, Favio, and Lupe explain some Mayan mythology.
Zona Arqueologica, Palenque: Maya city state flourished in 7th Century. goose bumps
Aluxes Wildlife Park, Palenque: Love Birds
Another long drive to the magical, quaint city, San Cristobal de las Casas, about 6500 elevation. Jackets required! Many interesting museums here including Na Balom. Indigenous woman pictured here at Na Balom, selling handmade shawls and blankets.
Santo Domingo Church, San Cristobal:
Last day of the tour included a stop at Cascadas El Chiflon. Here's our group enjoying the hike and scenery!
And Lou (Sonamara) taking the fast way down on a Zip Line!
Fair Winds everyone -

Updating our experience with Miguel of Discovery Tours. He supports Panama Posse (PP) with discounts. He took 6 of us on a 5 day tour to Palenque, including the Aluxes Ecopark (great “zoo” of local, tropical animals, all in a natural setting), San Cristobal, Cascadas El Chiflon - beautiful and has a great zip line. He took the “long” way to avoid the troubled road between San Cristobal and Palenque. He arranged to have a adjunct guide, Fabio, modern van with A/C and reliable driver Manual. And great service and attitude! Also, flexible, informative, always smiling, and happy to be around. Rate was $55/person/day. Hotels and meals extra. Some long driving days, but still, we loved it and highly recommend the use of Miguel by other PP mariners. In addition, separately, he arranged to drive us to Tapachula 2 days later for provisioning, gratis con
propina. A high-quality operation: he has a Mexican Federal Tourist license. And there’s more: he’s a lawyer in Chiapas when not touring!

The whole bay is a pretty great anchorage and one of the best
protected bays in Costa Rica.
Just up around the corner is the start
of the Gulf of Papagayo and it is famous for the winds that
blow December through March.
We get some of that wind but our protection is great and the
sea commonly remains flat without much swell.
He also said he can provide water taxis and watches for your

months and knows him well
The location on shore is 10.44682N 85.77324W, The depth is 15-25’

Had a lovely time at anchor and dropped the dinghy at 7 am as the park opens and we landed it near high tide at 09° 22.8619' N 084° 08.8114' W and locked it up ! We then walked along the beach towards the park trail and main entrance 09°23.4583 N, 084°08.7133 W.
I would not recommend any of these anchorage in any swell over 5 feet because the swell wraps around and can make things pretty rolly. You may need to use a stern anchor if you are a mono hull.
Spoke with Ranger Roger Murillo, you can contact him on his cell at +506 8937 9657; or email roger.murillo@sinac.go.cr , his colleagues speak English. Our recommendation is to arrive at the anchorage after 4:30PM ( everyone is gone ) and you simply go in the next morning and pay.
The Park can take at least a half day to explore, waterfalls, exotic birds, Raccoons, families of Monkeys and of course sloths.
There are many official Park Rangers who can direct you to find your favorite animals.
You can also hire a personal guide for $25 USD. Bring water ( no food ) and your binoculars.

1) Palenque, MX
Five day trip to Palenque and San Cristobal with Luis Sanchez
Day 1
10 hour drive to Palenque. Beautiful trip, partly through the mountains.
Luis is a very good driver. No difficulties on the road. Spend the evening in Palenque
Day 2
In the morning visit the museum and the Mayan ruins in Palenque, very impressive.
Heard howler monkeys. Nice lunch with grilled mojarra.
Lots of rain in the afternoon during our visit to Misol-Ha waterfall. Spend the night in Palenque.
Day 3
Visit Centro Ecoturistico Cascadas de Aqua Azul with huge waterfalls. Because of the rain aqua is not azul but café. Drive to San Cristobal through Sierra Madre, beautiful trip. Visit Jade Museum and Chocolate Museum. Nice evening with life music in San Cristobal.
Day 4
Visit the indigenous Mayan villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan. In the church we watch Mayan people having their rituals with sjamaans. We visit a woman who shows us how to make tablecloths and embroideries on clothing. Very special. Visit Parque Ecoturistico Grutas de Rancho Nuevo and Amber Museum. Spend the evening in former Zapatista headquarters with life Latin American music.
Day 5
Make a tour by panga through the Canyon de Sumidero. Saw crocodile and spider monkeys.
On our way back to Marina Chiapas we have a nice lunch in Palapa Quetzal.
Luis is a very pleasant guy. Because we were only the two of us, he joined us for all meals. He was very informative about everything and liked to explain about the culture, the food, the politics in Mexico. We knew nothing of this country, so we appreciated this very much. He took us to nice places which were very affordable (hotels, restaurants). Everywhere he met people he knew and we noticed he is very popular. He always checked if we liked what we were doing. As said, he is an excellent driver, which is important because we traveled a lot since distances are long. We really felt safe. It was obvious he was enjoying the tour too.
We can fully recommend this tour. It is worth every penny.

1) Paradisea Anchorage, Marina Chahue, MX PANAMA POSSE NAMING RIGHTS !!! Thanks to Bob from Paradisea we have the location for a new anchorage outside the Marina Chahue and we have aptly named it
the Paradisea Anchorage - so as you need to wait for your weather window to jot across the Tehuantepc to Chiapas - here is the link
http://www.goodnautical.com/mexico-pacific/anchorage/paradisea-anchorage
(note A big thank you from all of those who will follow in your wake)
The Marina Chahue is closed to new sailboats because of flooding.
But, harbormaster Ezekiel is helpful. We dinghy into the marina to dump trash, park dinghy to eat in town. Local worker Tito brought out diesel and LP gas, cleaned bottoms, laundry. Anchorage remains rolly & windy afternoons. No other anchorage with marina access & internet connection ( via Skyroam). Day trips waiting for WX window...limited. Bob

2) Tangolunda Bay - Toccata Anchorage, MX PANAMA POSSE NAMING RIGHTS !!!
And not to be outdone around the corner is the newly named Tangolunda Bay - Toccata Anchorage
So depending on your needs / wind and swell conditions you now have 2 choices !
(note A big thank you from all of those who will follow in your wake !)
"we anchored in Tongalunda, the bay east of the marina lined with high end resorts. We never went ashore, we did however notice buses and shuttles headed that direction when we were in the marina. The area on the west side was sheltered from the swell when we were there."

TOCCATA3) Bahia Samara, Costa Rica
Happy Dance is currently anchored in Bahia Samara, and will be sailing to Bahia Ballena in the morning (Sunday the 13th). We are happy, HAPPY to be past the papagayos and enjoying some calm anchorages. After checking in to Costa Rica in Playas del Coco (which was not an easy process for us due to closures), we spent a few days having some boat work done while anchored on the north end of the gusty bay. After finally getting our papers stamped we enjoyed a few peaceful nights anchored off of Playa Iguanita listening to the howler monkeys and the birds. Then we went a few miles south to Playa Guacamaya and really enjoyed it there, walking the long beach, snorkeling, and playing in the water. It felt like we were finally back into cruise mode after fighting winds and gusty anchorages for so long. For those of you heading south, we recommend Guacamaya!
Here's a photo our friends took of Happy Dance in the sunset next to Isla Chora.

4) Punta Cabeza, MX - Acapulco, MX
Punta Cabeza Negra South – 18 35.352 N 103 41.892 W – 35 feet in sand/mud. This anchorage doesn’t offer much other than turning the trip to Z-Wat into a few day trips versus an overnight. Again, great weather conditions but very rolly and I didn’t want to deploy a stern anchor or flopper stoppers in the event we needed to make a quick exit if the weather changed on us because the anchorage was fairly small. Both C-Map and Navionics charts were not accurate at this location.
- Caleta de Campos – 18 04.337 N 102 44.905 W – 35’ in sand. This was a very nice anchorage, both scenic and interesting. We had one other boat with us and this spot could have probably fit another 2 or 3. We didn’t go ashore but there is a small, very active beach town, with what appeared to primarily consist of locals. It would be a great beach to stretch the legs on and probably a pretty easy landing with the dinghy to the north.
- Zihuatenejo – no need to provided anchorage info as it is well covered. This was our first time visiting and we liked the town a lot. Local info can be found on facebook and www.porlosninos.com . We ate at a place called Tentaciones which has fantastic views of the bay and first class food. Set menu and a little pricey but well worth the cost. Probably in the top three restaurants I’ve been to in all of Mexico.
- Playa Escondido – 17 16.073 N 101 03 .357 W – 35 feet in sand. We tried anchoring in the town to the north (2 times / Bahia Papanoa) and in each case we couldn’t get the anchor to set in what appeared to be a rock shelf without anything to catch the hook on so we went around the corner to the southern anchorage and the anchor set hard and fast. This was a great anchorage although a little rolly. We could have deployed a stern anchor or flopper stopper to mitigate this but it was fine enough conditions for the people we had on board. Decided to stay and extra day here as it was a great bay to boogie board, kayak and walk the beach. A number of palapa restaurants, ate at one, nothing to write home about but the setting was fantastic and the beer was cold. Bonus, we had the entire anchorage to ourselves.
- Acapulco – Acapulco Yacht Club docks – this was a very difficult marina to get a hold of prior to arrival and nobody we have met on site speaks any English, so with our limited Spanish it makes it even more difficult to communicate other than face to face with Google Translate. We decided to just show up and if they didn’t have room we’d drop the hook or see if Vincent had a ball that could accommodate our size. I was able to hail them on 16 but due to my limited Spanish, all we understood was gas dock so we went and docked there. It is about 120’ long, and is a fixed concrete dock. The office gal Mary was out of the office so we arranged to stay on the gas dock for the evening without power. The next morning we talked with Mary, checked in (Mary takes care of signing you in and out of the Port also) and moved to a side tie floating dock at a rate of 1.50 per ft plus power and water. Fantastic facility with all the normal yacht club amenities eg restaurant, pool, locker room with showers, spa, tennis court, gift shop and small tienda with a few grocery stores within a couple of miles. We’ve been here a couple of days, saw the divers which was worth the effort to get there, went to Puerto Marques by cab to check out the marina but the office was closed and no one was available to answer any question on rate or availability for transients. Our take away is that this is a great stop over for transiting north or south but we wouldn’t consider it a destination stop.
Our plan is to stay at the YC until tomorrow, move to the Puerto Marques anchorage, then head south to the Huatulco area on Monday via overnight trip in order to catch a T-Pec window currently forecast for this coming Friday/Saturday. FYI – the zip line in Puerto Marques is so high there is zero chance that even the largest sailboat would have to worry about striking it and we hope to see a few people cross when we are over there because none of us are brave enough to try it ourselves!
Cheers,
FLOATING STONES

Answer by Sprezzatura
From Bahia Del Sol went straight across to Puesta del Sol. Pretty rough out from Fonseca. Took a ($$ costly) one day break in Puesta del Sol and would only stop if you need the break or want to stay for some time to explore NIC or leave boat for some time.
Then did a foot on the beach to B Santa Elena. Mostly pretty easy but last 8 hours pretty tough again. Santa Elena , Costa Rica was a fantastic anchorage.

1) Costalegre, MX
Chamela, December 23, 2018. Anchored at 19 35. 081 N & 105 07. 885 W in twenty feet. A small amount or roll during a S. W. swell.
Tenacatita, December 26, 2018. Anchored at 19 18. 072 N & 104 50. 086 W. in twenty five feet. Good holding, slightly rolly. About 26 boats there but a large anchorage with much room.
Santiago, December 29, 2018. Anchored at 19 06. 597 N & 104 23. 673 W. This was just West of the wreck noted in the cruising guide. There is a 2nd wreck marked by buoys just South and East of the listed wreck. A large well protected anchorage, good holding, very little swell but would not recommend entering this anchorage in bad visibility conditions. A large amount of tourists in a variety of Personal Water Crafts.
Manzanillo, December 30, 2018, Anchored at Las Hadas anchorage, 19 06. 131 N & 104 20. 695W in 15 feet. Good holding, very little swell. The cruising Guide advised we could dinghy into the marina and tie up at the dinghy dock. We did so but the charge to do this is 250 pesos. We went ashore one night using a mix of bus and taxi. Both very affordable. On page 166 of the crushing guide they have a photo of the Bar Social which looked interesting. After a long search we found it had closed up about four years ago. There are many small boats here pulling water skiers along with a lot of tourists on jet skis making the anchorage a little rough and loud. That's all we have for now.

2) Tehuantepec, MX
We had a very good trip crossing the Gulf of Tehuantepec. In the last night, 1/1, we anchored out just along the shore. It was a beautiful evening, quiet weather. We enjoyed it very much. We did not want to enter Chiapas in the dark. Anchored at 14 59.97 N 92 47.82 W in 8.1 m depth, good holding in sand. Near La Encrucyado. Next morning fishermen came to check if we had problems! Very attentive.
As soon as Rolf from the marina heard us calling the port captain on the VHF to ask permission to enter the harbor, he called us on the VHF and said he had a slip waiting for us and men on the dock to take our lines. The day before we had sent Memo an email to tell him we were on our way to his marina. We felt very welcome! Same night we met Luis and today we did the Chocolate tour with him. We like him and he is very enthusiastic. So we arranged the 5day Palenque tour with him for next week, very much looking forward to that! We are enjoying Mexico very much and the Posse really ads to it, because of all the information and the back up.
Thanks for that! Kind regards,

4) Medical / Vaccinations
Jan & I met with an infectious disease specialist in early Dec at the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans to address vaccination needs related to our travels. Bottom line – no Yellow Fever in the parts of Panama and CR that we plan to visit -coastal areas and San Blas. The guidance document provided for Panama Yellow Fever says: Vaccination “recommended for travelers aged >= 9 months; all mainland areas east of the Canal Zone. Transmission does not occur on the San Blas Islands, but it is necessary to transit areas with known transmission risk en route to the islands. Daytime insect precautions are essential for unvaccinated travelers.” I take that to presume travel by land to San Blas. The document further says, “Not recommended: itineraries limited to Panama City, the Canal Zone, areas west of the Canal Zone (see map) or the Pearl Islands.” I presume (with all associated risks) that YF west of the Canal Zone would likely extend into CR.
For what it is worth – we were advised to use anti-Malarial meds during our planned visit to San Blas Islands. I can provide the document citations if anyone is interested.

Music festivals in Guerrero, Oaxaca - source mexiconewsdaily.com
Tequila Blues Explosion is in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Blues on the Beach is in Huatulco It will soon be festival time in two Pacific coast resort destinations, both of which will celebrate blues and other music.
The second annual Tequila Blues Explosion Festival returns to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo after a successful start in January last year.
The festival’s purpose is to build community and provide a world-class experience for tourists, visitors and locals alike.
This year, the festival will be a fundraising event for the Talita Cumi orphanage near Zihuatanejo by helping to give them better facilities to enable them to serve more children.
A lineup of performers from Canada, the United States and Mexico, including two local bands, will present blues, blues-rock, jazz and reggae at the three-day festival, which kicks off January 10 with concerts at the Ixtapa Event Center.
A Blues Brothers Tribute Show kicks things off on the first day, bringing two hours of soul, rhythm and blues and blues music and comedy all based on the 1980 cult status movie The Blues Brothers.
To close off the weekend, the festival will present the Blues Kruise 4Kids Blues At Sea fundraising cruise on the catamaran Picante on Sunday, with festival performers entertaining on board and all-inclusive food and beverages.
Farther south, Blues On The Beach returns to Huatulco, Oaxaca, for its ninth year with concerts on January 17 and February 14.
Dawn Tyler Watson, dubbed Montreal’s “Queen of the Blues,” and Toronto harmonica player David Rotundo are the headliners at the January show; Rotundo will return with harmonica legend Lee Oskar for the second event.
Like last year, both shows will be held at Chahue beach but at a new, larger venue called the Sea Soul beach club.
The festival is a fundraiser for Un Nuevo Amanecer (UNA), a charity that helps disabled children.
The organization receives little government funding and most families of the 100 children who benefit can ill afford to pay for the help they receive.

6) Electricity - tech request - please reply
Here in Mexico we often see wide differences in voltage when in the marinas.
Currently the marina we're in regularly has voltage in the range of 135-138.
What are some ways we can protect the boat from this ?
Are there devices we can buy to diffuse the voltage somewhat before entering the boat ?

7) Acapulco, MX A large fire at the yacht club in Acapulco, Mexico broke out on Saturday (Dec 29, 2018) morning, injuring two men with second- and third-degree burns.
Authorities say that both men, who were also bruised in the incident, are being treated at a local hospital.
A statement from the Secretary of Civil Protection for Guerrero revealed that the fire, which started at 8 a.m. local time was caused when fuel sparked after one of the boats refueled without turning on their blowers - The fire then spread to a neighboring boat and a fuel pump.
(note - Diesel pump was not affected and things a are cleaned up as of Jan 3rd, 2019 )
