Cygnus came in 2nd, and Bram from SV Codiwomple came in 1st, winning 50%
pot and a bottle of Flor de Caña ).

2) INTRODUCING THE 🪸 CORAL POD THE NEW ROUTE IN THE PANAMA POSSE
On
February 3rd, 2023, The Belize Tourism Board officially announced its
partnership with The Panama Posse, the largest Pacific based sailing
rally which comprises a fleet of over 300 sailing vessels. The fun
filled family event was hosted by the Shelter Bay Marina in Colon,
Panama and had over 100 vessels from both the South Pacific Posse and
Panama Posse in attendance.
Belize
featured a presentation highlighting destination services and
attractions. The event also marked the launch of the “Coral Pod”, the
official Panama Posse member route to Belize; complete with anchorage,
route maps, attractions and tour guide listings which are available
exclusively to Panama Posse members and can be accessed on the https://panamaposse.com/belize page. Members of the posse were treated to local rums, Marie Sharp’s hot sauces and a special Pig Roast courtesy of Shelter Bay Marina.
Belize
Tourism Board was represented by Mr. Wilber Pech, Business Development
Manager, Industry Development. A very special thank you was extended to
The Placencia Yacht Club, Hakim’s Shipyard and Thunderbird Marina for
coming onboard with special discounts for Posse members wishing to visit
Belize.
It was a magical evening and we look forward to hosting the Posse members in Belize.
Hey
guys Gabby here from Voodoo. We just got back to service and decided to
share what happened in Las Perlas, Panama. So we were anchored off isla
Contradora, I was outside having my coffee when a fellow cruiser (
“JEANNE / Ford, Michelle & Izzy their small dog ) pulled up
super close to us and told us they have been robbed and needed us to
call the police. We were not robbed but helped a fellow cruiser who was.
We told them to anchor and went over to help. This boat was anchored
off isla del ray at Isla del Espiritu Santo Panama ( it got great
reviews on navionics) at 8pm small skiff approached their boat super
fast ( so fast their dog didn’t even bark). 3 men in total boarded,
before the women got outside she already had a gun in her face. They
told the couple to lie down face down in the cockpit. While one guy held
a gun to their heads the other two guys pulled EVERYTHING out of the
boat, closets, bilge, everywhere. They took anything of value. They took
tools, ipads, phones, hand held radios, everything. They took the gas
can to the dinghy (since they couldn’t detach the motor). They then
made them go in the bow room and cut the vhf radio wire as they
left. We tried to find authorities at isla Contradora but there are no
police there. They told them they had to report it in Panama city. We
decided to leave after that as well since we did not want anything
similar to happened to us. The couple is fine thankfully they are not
hurt at all, but being robbed at gunpoint is very scary. If anyone
has any questions I will try to answer them the best I can but keep in
mind I just helped them the next morning.
NOTE: We are waiting for a first hand account from the vessel
“LOCATION:
08 25.7N 078 51.2W. Jeanne (I think that’s spelt
correctly). Ford and Michelle and Izzy the small dog. It’s Fontaine
Pajot cat US flagged. The perpetrators were headed north after robbery the bastards.”
The
boat came from the south and left to the north, Ford thinks to a small
town near there? He thinks he would recognize the panga.
They
went to Contadora police in the morning who said they only deal with
minor crime. They reported to aeronaval(?) here at La Playita Marina.
Police(?) in Panama City shut today. Reporting it on Monday.” Reported
by SY MEHALA and verified by SY VODOO

Golfito Report!
There
is a small and very rustic restaurant high on the ridge above Golfito
with an awesome view. Food isn’t bad either but you are definitely
paying for the view. There is a rickety little observation platform you
can pay to go out on for an even better look down into the harbor. You
can locate this on google maps as “Mirador Las Torres
donde
Jovita”. Local people think nothing of hiking up here on a weekend
morning for excercise. It was about 5-1/4 miles from the marina. Hike or
drive the road up through the jungle is terrific. There is also a
lovely vista from an intermediate spot much closer to sea level
identified as “Mirador La Torre Cerro Adams”. The “torres” are the radio
antenna high on the ridge visible from many parts of town.
There
is an interesting boat ride, hire one or use a fast dinghy, from deep
inside Golfito Harbor through dense mangrove swamp to the mouth of the
Rio Coto. This is the protected, that is avoiding open water, route to
Zancudo. Passable…
Easy,
if time consuming international self-checkout in Golfito. Longest wait
is at the bank to pay for the zarpe. Standard fare: Immigration (across
the street from Samoa Hotel) then Port Captain(on access road to new
marina) then bank(top of the hill) then customs(in duty free zone past
airport), sequence not relevant for these two, then back to Port Captain
to collect your completed zarpe.
Of
course I got to immigration behind the guy with a sack of 280 passports
so that caused a delay:). If you don’t want to deal Bruce Blevins,
above, is great and can do it all. He and his staff are also
surprisingly forthcoming with all kinds of information and will tell you
exactly what you need to do even if you’re doing it yourself.
Refreshing!!

On
2 October 2021, a large fire occurred in the town of El Cayo on a cay
named Bonacca which is part of an island named Guanaja off the north
coast of Honduras. The fire started around daybreak and spread quickly
into businesses and homes. It forced hundreds of residents to evacuate
and flee for safety.
