Excerpt from SY Solmate Journal:

20220604 ABL 0438 I
awake to the sound of rain and the feeling of Solmate shifting
laterally, around her anchor. I go up on deck and survey in the dark. We
are a bit closer to our neighbor Jasper than I would like, but that’s a
consequence of where they anchored. There seems to be no immediate
danger.

Several
months ago in Georgetown I anchored in about 17’ of water in a position
that seemed similarly close to a 36’ monohull named Stateless. In 16’
of water, with four feet for the platform, a 7:1 scope requires a swing
of 140 feet. We let out 95 feet of chain and attached our bridle. The
wind was out of the east for several days and all the boats in the
anchorage seemed to swing together.

One
night while in Georgetown, I was similarly awakened to the sound of
rain and the feeling of Solmate shifting laterally, and I similarly went
up on deck to survey in the darkness. The wind was howling and had
moved quite south of east. Moisture was pouring out of the sky like
someone was spilling it out of a bucket. I found Stateless about 30 feet
off the port quarter. It seemed her anchor chain was quite different in
scope than ours and it made me quite uncomfortable--it looked as if we
kept rotating north (as we would if the wind continued south) Stateless’
bow would collide with Solmate’s stern. I had been the second to
anchor, so I would be at fault for that collision if it happened. I
called below for Jen, and told her I needed her on deck. She woke and
said she’d be right up--she needed clothes and contact lenses.

When
I turned back to the port quarter, Solmate was less than 15 feet away
from Stateless, we were approaching her rapidly. I called “Jen, I need
you” loudly. I wanted her to go to the anchor locker and get some
fenders to fend off. I didn’t think I could leave the port quarter and
go myself as I believed I had to manually fend off the imminent
collision.

There
were less than ten feet between us when I got an idea--I untied Lunatic
from the starboard aft cleat and dragged her across the stern. Lunatic
is a RIB, or rigid inflatable boat, so her sides were pneumatic tubes; I
figured I would squeeze her between our two boats and prevent the
fiberglass boats from colliding. When I got back to the port quarter,
the boats were nearly touching and I worked Lunatic in between, pushing
on Stateless’ bow and pulling on Lunatic’s painter. Lunatic was wedged
in, her starboard side pressed against the aft corner of Solmate’s sugar
scoop. The corner dug in, and I thought she might pop. I don’t know how
much pressure a RIB can take. At that moment, Stateless’ captain came
up on deck. He had unsurprisingly heard the sound of Lunatic rubbing
against his hull. I shouted out to him over the tremendous noise of the
wind and the rain: “How much chain do you have out.”

“Sixty
feet,” he replied. OMG, sixty feet? That’s barely 3:1. Of course, this
situation is still my fault as he was anchored here first, and his 60
foot scope is holding his much smaller vessel in place.

“Can you let out more chain?” I shout.

“I only have 100 feet, but maybe I can let some more out.”

He
went to work as I continued to fend off the boats. By this time, Jen
was on deck watching the near-catastrophe unfold. Stateless let out
about 30’ of chain and swung behind Solmate. When we reached our steady
“unengaged” state in the south wind, Stateless was about ten feet behind
Solmate. The three of us stood there in the darkness, in the rain, in
the wind, and surveyed the situation. It appeared stable and should hold
until morning. I shouted an apology and he was gracious about it. We
all went back to bed.

When
the sun came up the rain was gone. The wind and seas had died down. In
the moderate breeze, Solmate and Stateless were still about ten feet
apart. Eventually the wind resumed its normal flow from the east. I
can’t remember whether Stateless or Solmate left first, but I do recall
that we were not together at the anchorage next time there was a south
wind.

But
that was then, on this early morning in the darkness, and the wind, and
the rain, having concluded there was no immediate danger from Jasper, I
went back to bed.

0638 “Did you hear that?” Jen says to me while I’m sleeping, “It sounds like the anchor chain.”

I
hadn’t heard it, but now I was up. I go up to the salon and survey the
situation. The wind is 1 knot and its raining. I look at the chart
plotter, and the night’s light air has swung Solmate through the one
place in her rotation that would be bad--Solmate’s anchor chain is
likely caught on the mooring block. With the wind so light, there is no
urgency, and even if it is caught, it will be easy to remedy. Since
there is no hurry, and because I have to use the restroom anyway, the
restroom located in Solmate’s starboard bow wins my attention.

Screech. Scrape. Klunk. “What’s that? Are you OK?” I call out from my forward perch.

Jen’s replies, “That’s the chain.”

Wow,
it was quite a noise. We are no longer “likely” wrapped on the mooring
block, we are definitely wrapped. Absent an unusual circumstance, a boat
lies downwind of its anchor. Since the wind shifts around all the time,
the location of a boat can be found within a circle (and usually on the
circle) that is defined using the swing as the radius. Except where
there is a strong wind, the chain lies mostly on the bottom. If there is
something on the bottom on which the chain can catch, like the mooring
block we charted yesterday, and the wind causes the boat and thus the
chain to swing past the obstruction, the chain will wrap on it. Since
the mooring block is 70 feet from Bernie, and our scope is 90 feet, the
chain about 20’ ahead of the bow will wrap, putting 20 feet of chain
between our boat and the new “anchor” and taking our bridle out of the
mix. It would be a terrible situation in harsh conditions, and I can
imagine a parade of horrible consequences. Thus, I am quite pleased that
the wind is substantially non-existent.

Jen
then informs me that the wind has picked up to a moderate breeze. I
guess sailors should know that things can change fast. I hurry my
business and get to the salon. Jen and I make a plan. I can go on the
bow and pull the starboard bridle lead. If the wind doesn’t get any
stronger, it will require only moderate effort to move Solmate in this
way. When we are over the point of connection between the bridle and the
chain, I think I should be able to pull the chain upwards and over the
mooring block. There are a lot of unknowns, but the wind at least is
cooperating somewhat. We get our rain gear and prepare to go forward
when the wind shifts again--not slightly, but almost 180 degrees. Just
enough to unwrap Solmate. We watch the chartplotter in amazement at this
very fortunate turn of events. Once the chain had unwrapped itself with
a little help from a friendly wind, Solmate drifted to the opposite
side of the anchor, and now lies as she should, directly downwind from
the anchor.

I
again survey for issues. Because of our experience with Stateless, and
despite the fact that I got four fenders ready-at-hand, Jen and I agreed
to leave Lunatic in the water last night. I looked at her and she was
riding lower than I would like in the water. On closer inspection, I
find that she’s taken on almost a foot of water. Fortunately, it’s fresh
water which is nary as corrosive as its salty counterpart, but it needs
to be bailed out. Jen retrieves our last working portable pump. It’s a
small hand pump with a relatively short throw. Lunatic is tied to the
starboard stern cleat. I grab her second painter and tie her amidships,
albeit closer to the stern platform. Jen hands me the pump and I climb
aboard Lunatic and begin pumping her out, in the pouring rain.
Fortunately, I am mostly sheltered from the wind by Solmate.

After
pumping and pumping and pumping, I recall there is a small liter-sized
bailer stored aboard. It’s basically a large cup with a handle. I start
bailing Lunatic, maybe 200 liters? As the water level got too low to
bail effectively, I went back to pumping. I was soaked through by the
rain, but the day’s warmth even without the sun allowed me to maintain
enough body heat so that I wasn’t shivering or cold.

When
I emerged from the project, I proudly announced to Jen that we would be
lifting Lunatic out of the water and stowing her on her platform, which
I promptly did. Once stowed above the water line I can remove Lunatic’s
drain plug and let her bail herself. I just hope we don’t need her as a
fender.

1000
I hear a chain clanking. Jen and I look around. Jasper is on deck
adjusting her scope. We chat briefly with Jasper on the radio, and a
calm voice informs us Jasper is letting out 20 feet of additional
chain. That’s good by me; I am happy to be 20 feet farther from
Jasper.

1100 We
continue to check the weather, but the models only update twice a day,
so it doesn’t change. Wind, by its very nature, is rarely smooth and
steady. Most winds are gusty, and you have to keep your eye on both the
sustained wind and the gusts. According to weather experts, sustained
wind is an average of the wind speed over a two minute period. Oddly, my
very sophisticated wind data displays available on our chart plotters,
which includes true and apparent wind angles and graphs of direction and
strength over time, doesn’t do the wind speed calculation according to
the proper formula. The wind instrument itself reports only wind
direction and gusts. The wind instrument takes its measurement from the
top of the mast using an instrument that combines wind direction
indicator (WINDEX) and an anemometer, and that data is sent by wire to
the NMEA 2000 network, where any attached marine instrument can see it.

Almost
a year ago, I purchased a remarkably small server device that connect
to the NMEA 2000 network and rebroadcasts the data on the network over a
port on my wifi. Small may be an understatement, it’s a cylinder about
2” long with a diameter of about 1”. Despite it’s diminutive size, the
server allowed me to make a web page available to any phone or other
device connected to our ships local area network (by wifi or otherwise)
Thus, anyone on the boat with a browser on their phone or computer can
see the current ships data about heading, wind speed, angle, engine rpm,
sea temperature, gps position, UTC time and the reported sounding for
depth. I use that, along with my phone’s anchor alarm (which plots
position over time and displays my alarm radius) when I am in bed at
night to check on Solmate’s status. The latter of course, is only used
when we are at anchor, but the former allows the Jen or I to see
valuable information from bed when someone else is on watch.

Anticipation
is high. The winds slowly build. The massive system, our weather event,
is leaving the coast of Florida, and heading northeast out over water.
Systems like this generally weaken on landfall and strengthen when they
return to the sea. The system as predicted, as best we can tell, is
leaving Florida just north of our position. The counterclockwise
rotation of northern hemisphere lows gives us the ability to roughly
track our bearing to the storm by the wind’s direction. Now the wind is
out of the south-south east (5 o’clock). As the storm moves to a
position where it’s leading edge is north of us, the winds will be out
of the south (6 o’clock), and when eye of the storm passes east of our
meridian, the winds will move to the west-southwest (8 o’clock).

1800 Without sun, and with the fairly heavy rains, our house bank falls below 50% with night approaching.
I start the genset, and turn on the salon and owner-hull air
conditioning to get some cool, dry air. We have enough water so I need
not engage the watermaker to use surplus generator power. Jen wants to
shower, but we haven’t heated the water for two days; it won’t be hot,
but it’s likely to be warm enough to be comfortable. I would normally
turn on the hot water but this is only accessible from the starboard
engine room, and the starboard engine room is only accessible from the
starboard sugar scoop. I don’t want to open the engine room hatch in
this rain and let all that water into the engine room, it’s probably OK
but  just seems unnecessary. Jen finds the water fine for a shower,
and comes back upstairs clean, cool, dry and happy.

I
have so-far resisted the temptation of closing in the helm station
completely. The helm station has windowed canvas that can enclose it 360
degrees. Last May when we reached the Chesapeake, we replaced the rear
canvas with a sturdy screen-like fabric that is not water tight, but
makes for good ventilation. We can reach the helm station from the salon
via a steep short staircase. This staircase can be used regardless of
whether the helm station is buttoned up or completely exposed. The helm
station has two other exits, however, one to the starboard side deck and
one to the flybridge, which sits more mid-ships and another short
staircase above. There is an opening for each of the exits that can be
closed in with the windowed canvas. I have not closed them and while
there is no direct rain in, the helm station is fairly wet. The reason I
generally don’t close these two access portals is just that, access. If
the access to the flybridge is blocked, I cannot easily and safely get
to the mast or boom in weather without taking a minute or two to open
and stow the canvas (you can’t really leave it flapping around in the
weather). Moving the canvas that blocks access to the deck is a bigger
job, and could take three or four minutes, but that is mitigated by the
fact that I can just go down to the cockpit, across to the sugar scoops
and the up onto the deck from there. Either way, if there were an issue
that creates a need to get a location where the access is blocked, I
would need to take extra time to address the issue. Thinking ahead as a
sailor must do, I generally conclude that at the moment the issue
becomes an issue, I need to get there in a hurry, the extra time needed
to gain access could prove undesirable, or worse. Nonetheless, I decide I
will close in the helm station. Doing so will keep it drier in the
event that we need to be there during the weather event, for example to
relieve strain on the anchor using the engines, to avoid another boat
that drags its anchor or breaks free from its mooring, or to maneuver
the boat in the terrible and unlikely case we break free ourselves. It
has a second collateral benefit, making the canvas system complete--each
end is attached to another--and thus, I figure, more self supporting. I
get very wet going in and out of the enclosure to zip and lash it in
place.

Gale
force winds are now sustained, meaning the wind is in the mid to high
30s, with gusts frequently into the high forties. We saw one gust at
52.0 knots on the display. That’s basically tied for the highest gust
we’ve ever seen--and that was just a month ago off Egg Island near the
Devils Backbone. I make frequent inspection checks of the deck. We hear
all kinds of noises: whistling, clacking, thrashing and occasionally
bumping. We calmly try to draw conclusions as to the source of each
noise, some requiring inspection, others just disregarded as normal.
Going on deck for inspection is a wet endeavor.

1903 Clack,
clack, clack, clack. OK, that’s not normal. Although it’s overcast, the
sun has not set, and the light of the day is still bright enough that I
easily find a snap on one outboard section of the canvas enclosure
undone. I redo the snap and go back inside to dry off--I change my
soaked clothes and I check sunset, the instruments report that it will
occur today at 2001. Thankfully afore-knowledge of celestial events,
unlike afore-knowledge of weather, is perfect.

1921 Clack,
clack, clack, clack. I head back outside and see the snap undone again,
as well as another hook-like connector. I push the snap back in, and it
pops out. After a brief (wet) inspection, I conclude that the snap
can’t take the pressure of these sustained winds; I also conclude that
the flapping released the other connector.

I
work first on the snap to stop the flapping. I roll in the small lower
section of canvas that the snap supports and tie it off to the larger
areas. The flapping is stopped, but there is a small hole in the system.
The location of the hole seems unworrisome, so I look at how to keep
the other connector in place as the snap is a substantial part of its
support. I take a snap-hook connected to a length of polypropylene line
and connect one end to the connector. I run the line rearwards and
fasten the other end to a relatively secure location near the aft of the
boat. I watch for a bit to see how my temporary fix fares. The system
stays in place as the wind gusts, so I again go inside and dry off. This
time I am so wet, I have to change my clothes, I hang up my wet outfit
in the cockpit which despite the raging weather event, is rather calm
and dry. The cockpit was well-designed to provide protection from the
weather, and although its floor is wet, the seats, tables and make-shift
clothes line are largely well protected.

1800
It’s sunset, as predicted. The sustained winds are still gale force as
predicted. While the ominous thought of howling gusts running through
our rigging throughout the night is upon us, we cheerfully decide to
ignore it, and have a drink and some dinner. Solmate seems secure. I go
outside and make one last position check to ensure Solmate and all of
the other boats in the harbor are where I would expect them. All is as
expected. With Solmate secure, on the way back into the salon from the
cockpit, I grab Jen a Yingling from the cockpit fridge and I get myself a
hard seltzer.

The
wind is relentless. Jen and I largely ignore it, and while I do make
hourly checks around the vessel, we settle in to have dinner and then
watch some TV.

1123
I look over at Jen, she’s fast asleep. It has been a long day. I insist
she go to bed. She is reluctant as she doesn’t want to abandon me. I
assure her that having rested crew is important, and that if there is
any reason to need her I will call down to get her. She takes another
look at the weather models on the computer, and I point out that the
wind is now about 15 degrees west of south, which means the eye of the
event has passed our meridian and the worst is almost assuredly over.
Off to bed she goes.

Alone
on anchor watch, I read and watch TV. Every 20 minutes or so, I check
our position, the wind speed and direction and the location of the
mooring block obstruction relative to our chain. When the wind howls I
look and continue to see gusts into the low forties, each time thinking
that must be the end of it.

20220605 ABL 0323 Jen
emerges at the companionway door to see if I am OK. I am and I tell her
to go back to bed. Gale force winds continue to blow. Over the next 30
minutes the wind eases to
a near-gale, then to a strong breeze, then to a fresh breeze. Is it over?

0400 After
15 minutes of sustained winds below 20 knots, I head down to go to bed.
The house bank is at 93%, so I turn on our stateroom air conditioning
and after washing up, I join Jen in the bed.

1217
I awake, shut off the air conditioning and come up to the deck. The day
is sunny with a gentle breeze. Jen is at her computer. I make coffee
and look around the harbor. All the boats are in place. Kids that live
on some of the other catamarans are screaming and jumping into the
water. The house bank is at 97%. It’s like it never happened.

INFO

The Government of the Republic affirms that it has not yet established contacts with the company Starlink, owned by tycoon Elon Musk, which offers satellite Internet service.

The information was released by Carlos Enrique Alvarado, Minister of Science and Technology, before the Treasury Affairs Commission of the Assembly.

“We already had a meeting with a representative of a company, with Tim Foss, a month and a half ago; We have not yet met with Starlink or with SpaceX, but we are going to be making the necessary arrangements to have contact with them,” said Alvarado Briceño after a query from the ruling deputy Pilar Cisneros, about the possibility of bringing the Internet to remote areas due to means of satellite swarms.
change of speech

It should be remembered that at the beginning of the administration, President Rodrigo Chaves stated that he had planned to talk with Musk to ask him for help in implementing connectivity to 5G satellite technology, a service that the South African billionaire’s firm does not even offer, since that the wireless connections it provides are not fifth-generation solutions.

But in mid-September, Chaves Robles changed his speech and now says that what he is looking for with the approach to Musk is to bring the Internet through wireless links to rural areas.

prevention notice

Due to displacement of Tropical Wave #1 over our region

The
National System for National Protection (SINAPROC) informs the public
that it maintains a Prevention and Monitoring Notice due to the
displacement and evolution of Tropical Wave #1 in the coming days over
the region.

The
areas under notice until May 19, 2022 are: Bocas del Toro, Ngábe Buglé
Comarca, Chiriquí, Veraguas, Los Santos, Herrera, Coclé, West Panama,
Panama, Darién, Emberá Wounaan Comarca, Colón, Guna Yala Comarca,
sectors mountainous and maritime areas of the Panamanian Caribbean and
Pacific.

Currently,
tropical wave #1 is located over Venezuela, moving at a speed of 28
KM/H immersed in a favorable environment for the development of clouds
and storms towards Colombia and Panama. During the week, these
conditions will increase the rains over the national territory,
according to the Hydrometeorology Directorate of the Electricity
Transmission Company, S.A, (ETESA). ETESA forecasts accumulated rainfall
per day that could reach between 40 mm to 90 mm or liters of water per
square meter.

SINAPROC warns to be careful in the event of sudden flooding of rivers and streams.

PREVENTION
MEASURES Try to be aware of the updates of the prevention notices. Do
not risk your life trying to cross streams. If it is raining, avoid
driving at high speeds.

The Backstory:

“We
didn’t want to ‘settle down’ into family life  - we wanted to fill
it with travel and adventure, so in 2017 quit our jobs, took the kids
out of school and set sail around the world!”

the beginning

Embarking
on this  journey - leaving behind friends, family, school, jobs
and our home - has to be the most difficult decision we have ever
made.

We’d worked in the marine industry for many years, set up RYA training centers,
skippered for sailing companies, crewed on ocean passages and worked
with UK rescue services (RNLI), but becoming traveling liveaboards while
home schooling kids has tested our parenting and sailing skills to the
max and challenged every fiber of our being.

This
is the story of our journey – the highs and lows, why we continue to do
it and how we see the future. It’s also the opening chapters of our
kids’ lives, and we want those chapters to lay the foundation of an epic
story of high adventure and world travel, of self-sufficiency and
resourcefulness, of stoicism and self worth .. and hopefully a bit of
fun!

We
began blogging the day we started looking for a sailboat, and our
Sailing YouTube Channel documents our journey from the very beginning -
from choosing a sailboat and leaving home to adapting to life afloat,
from home schooling and boat maintenance to traveling with kids and
making money while we travel. In short, it’s dedicated to families that
are considering an adventure of their own – to lay down a template and
in the words of Yewan, our youngest - “If you want to do it - DO IT!”

3) ROSIE 2  PASSAGE TO TULUM 🇲🇽 MEXICO

Tulum

Had
a great time today going the Mayan ruins of Tulum with cousin Traci and
Toby Mills. Been a great week getting to see Jenny and Lee yesterday
now Traci and Toby!!

Tulum

An Ancient City Surrounded by Walls

The Classic Period

The
Mayan people are members of an incredible culture that once thrived in
the lower Mexico regions and what is now Honduras, Guatemala, El
Salvador and Belize. The period during which they flourished was the
classic period, which was from around 300 to 900 CE. Research in
Guatemala has recently uncovered that this society was notably ahead of
its time as early as 300 BCE.

Tulum

The Mayans constructed temples and pyramids. They created a style of
writing with hieroglyphics and were knowledgeable in astrology and
mathematics. This clever society produced beautiful works of art and
became highly advanced traders. Not only did the Mayans create stunning
art pieces, but they also cultivated vanilla, chocolate, pineapples,
chili peppers and papayas. The Mayans constructed reservoirs and
causeways. They even wove fabrics featuring rich colors.

tulum

The word “Tulum” is a colonial one, and it means wall. Researchers have
found clues about Tulum’s original name. It appears that the city was
once referred to as Zama, which means dawn in the Mayan language. When
Juan de Grijalva explored Mexico, he came across the walled city during
the early 1800s. The Mayans used the fortified city around 1200 to 1450
CE. It remained inhabited until the late 16th century.

Early
on, Tulum was a prosperous civilization. The village was a major
crossroads for trade from land and from sea. It saw trade from Honduras
and even into the Yucatan. Archaeologists have made this determination
from the large number of artifacts that were found in Tulum from all
over Mexico. It is one of the only fortified Mayan sites in the world
and one of Mexico’s best preserved coastal historical sites. Tulum's
ruins have tempted travelers from all over the world to come view them
in person.

About the City

The wall that surrounds Tulum is about 16 feet thick. However, some areas
are as thick as 26 feet, and it is constructed from limestone. When the
Mayan people lived inside the walls, the fortification provided them
with protection. However, researchers are unsure as to what kind of
protection was needed. There are a number of theories. One thought is
that Tulum’s population, which was around 600 souls, sought protection
from invaders. Another theory is that the Mayans housed nobility and
priests inside the walls, leaving the peasants outside.

The most common depiction that you’ll see in Tulum is the diving, or
descending, god. This deity is displayed as an inverted figure. When you
visit the historical site, you’ll see the diving god on many of the
ruin’s doorways. The ancient Mayans believed that the waters surrounding
Tulum were the entrance to the underworld.

Tulum’s city square is centrally located with El Castillo on the left. This
stunning structure was built on top of a 39-foot cliff,

The
town is located in the flat wide caldera of the 6 km wide El Valle
volcano that is inactive; there is evidence that it erupted as recently
as about 300,000 years ago. Because of its elevation (600 m), it is
cooler than the Panamanian lowlands.  Natural attractions near El
Valle include the Chorro El Macho waterfall, Las Mozas waterfall, the
"square" trees behind Hotel Campestre, and a group of small thermal
pools. The area around the town is also known for being one of the last
habitats of the critically endangered Panamanian golden frog. Some of
the forests around the town are protected areas.

Calico Skies

The Backstory:

Grace
and Bill are college sweethearts that started dating in the fall of
2002. After we graduated from Manhattan College and obtained a Certified
Public Accountant License we thought it was time to invest in a
lifelong passion of Bill’s, sailing. In the summer of 2009 we bought our
1985 Sabre 36, Calico Skies as a place to escape Manhattan on the
weekends. Gradually we started spending more and more time onboard,
eventually giving up our Manhattan apartment to live on the boat for
four to five months over the summer. We may have been the only finance
professionals starting their day riding in a dinghy to the dock, at
times rowing when the motor was broken. Spending our summers on the boat
had us hooked and we put into place a plan to save enough money in
order to travel full time.

In
July 2016 Bill quit his job to get the boat fully prepared for her
first trip south to the Caribbean. Grace was supposed to quit in the
fall but she got cold feet and decided she wasn’t ready to leave her
job. We decided that Bill would take the boat down singlehanded and
Grace would fly in to visit while the boat was in the Caribbean. After
spending a lot of quality time in the Caribbean during the winter of
2017 Grace was ready to leave, quitting her job in September 2017.

Since
leaving NYC in the fall of 2017 we haven’t looked back! We’ve travelled
over 25,000nm including two Atlantic crossings and visited more than 20
countries. . We decided to start documenting our travels on Youtube as
we departed on a four thousand miles sail from Gibraltar in Europe to
Grenada in the Caribbean.

We
tend to be sporadic in our movements, often making long offshore jumps
on a whim. We don’t always know where we’re going but we’re always
going!

15) SUNKEN PIRATE CITY AT PORT ROYAL 🇯🇲 JAMAICA

Pirate City

“The
earth opened and swallowed many people, before my face, and the sea I
saw came mounting in over the wall, upon which I concluded it impossible
to escape.”

Edmund
Heath, survivor and eyewitness to the devastating 1692 earthquake wrote
these words in a letter from the safety of a ship moored in the city’s
harbor, overlooking the ruins of his city. Port Royal, once called “the
most wicked and sinful city in the world” was famous the world over for
its booze—the blackout-inducing Kill Devil Rum, its pirates, and its sex
workers. Needless to say, when the city was nearly destroyed, there
were some parties that saw it as a convenient solution to an ugly
problem.

The
English and their pirate friends were relatively new to the area.
Jamaica had been held by the Spanish since Columbus first declared it
“the fairest island eyes have beheld” in 1494. Lacking gold or other
obvious exploitable wealth, the Spanish held it but did not focus much
energy there. It came under English power in 1655, after Cromwell sent
English raiders to invade and capture the Spanish stronghold at
Hispaniola (now Haiti and Dominican Republic, then the center of Spanish
trade in the Caribbean). Cromwell’s men failed spectacularly at taking
Hispaniola and turned to Jamaica as a second choice, better-than-nothing
option.

Located
on the southeast coast of Jamaica, the natural harbor at Port Royal
became the center of English life in Jamaica. By the late 1600s it had
become one of the largest European cities in the new world, second only
to Boston. It had also become the infamous home of pirates, sex workers,
and Englishmen on the make. Far from home, they made their livings off
of the slave trade, slave labor in plantations, and the money that the
pirates brought in from their looting forays against the Spanish.

It
may be seen as an indicator of the caliber of vice in Port Royal that
in 1675 the notorious pirate Henry Morgan became the Lieutenant
Governor. In fact, Morgan began to crack down on overt piracy as the
grand era of privateering he had been part of began to enter its waning
phase. He died just four years before the earthquake struck and was
buried in the Palisadoes cemetery.

Earthquake

More
recently the Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University
and the Jamaica National Heritage Trust conducted underwater
archaeological examinations, ending in 1990. Their explorations have
brought to light artifacts of 17th century life rarely seen. Because of
the nature of the disaster, which left many buildings intact and more or
less undisturbed, it has been compared to Pompeii for its
archaeological wonders and was a designated National Heritage Site in
1999.

Dreamer's Whale Shark

Dreamers  picture of a whale shark

The
whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a slow-moving, filter-feeding carpet
shark and the largest known extant fish species. The largest confirmed
individual had a length of 18.8 m (61.7 ft).  The whale shark holds
many records for size in the animal kingdom, most notably being by far
the largest living nonmammalian vertebrate.

The
whale shark is found in open waters of the tropical oceans and is
rarely found in water below 21 °C (70 °F) Studies looking at vertebral
growth bands and the growth rates of free-swimming sharks have estimated
whale shark lifespans at 80–130 years. Whale sharks have very large
mouths and are filter feeders, which is a feeding mode that occurs in
only two other sharks, the megamouth shark and the basking shark. They
feed almost exclusively on plankton and small fishes, and pose no threat
to humans.

21 ) Venture Capitalists Aiming to Disrupt Fish Farming

Forever Oceans says it’s built technology that allows it to push into new frontiers for cultivated fish.

BLOOMBERG By Priya Anand

May 13, 2022, 5:00 AM CST

Off
the western coast of Panama, near a town called Puerto Armuelles where
Chiquita Banana once had a major presence, Forever Oceans is preparing
to harvest and sell almost 3 million pounds of yellowtail to sell in
filets or for sushi. While the eight-year-old startup’s product is
seafood, its executives spend a lot of time talking about the innovation
that goes into the floating cages where its fish spend their lives. The
company will succeed, they say, because it has improved the core
technologies, from specialized enclosures to sensors and robotics,
needed to raise large amounts of seafood farther out in the ocean than
traditional fish farms.

Investors’
hunger is increasing for startups with big plans for food. Venture
capitalists plowed more than $39 billion into food-related tech
companies in 2021, double the amount they put into the sector the year
before, according to Pitchbook Data Inc., a research company. More than
half that funding went to digital grocers and online marketplaces,
natural targets for investors accustomed to assessing software companies
that build consumer products. But there’s also growing interest in
sustainable food production. Fish farming, which grew 527% from 1990 to
2018, according to the United Nations, is poised to become an even
larger part of the supply chain. The UN said in a 2020 report that about
34% of fish stocks were overfished. According to the World Bank, the
figure is much higher, at 90%.

Global Fish Stocks

Forever
Oceans has only produced about 110,000 fish so far and already seems to
be tempering expectations for its inaugural harvest. In an interview in
April, Chief Executive Officer Bill Bien said the company would have a
fall harvest this year of at least 1 million fish. A company
spokesperson later walked that back to 450,000, saying Bien may have
included next year’s harvest estimates in his projection.

Fish
farmers like Forever Oceans raise hatchlings in big tanks on land, then
transport them to open-water farms to mature, in Forever Oceans’ case,
when the fish reach about six pounds. The company uses cylindrical
enclosures about 50 meters in diameter, made of mesh so ocean water can
flow through without the fish escaping. A cable attached to the cage
anchors it to the ocean floor; barges at the surface pump food through
pipes to the fish. Forever Oceans’ enclosures currently cost about
$300,000, though the company says it has improved its technology and
shifted to less-expensive materials to cut costs by more than half from
earlier versions.

Fiorever OCeans

Competitors
are skeptical of Forever Oceans’ claims that its technology gives it a
significant edge. “There’s nothing revolutionary about what they’re
building,” says Dick Jones, CEO of Blue Ocean Mariculture, another
upstart fish-farming operation backed by Christy Walton of the Walmart
clan.

The
technology Forever Oceans has developed allows it to operate much
farther offshore than most other farms, says Bien, who took over as CEO
last fall after running the agricultural lighting division at Signify
NV. But being far away from land poses its own set of challenges. It’s
more time-consuming and expensive to check on problems when they
inevitably arise. Forever Oceans had a cage slip away from its mooring
at its testing site off Hawaii, Bien says. The company was able to
rescue the fish from the cage, and froze them to use as product samples.

The
company says it has had fish escape, which poses financial and
environmental risks. But the company says it loses fewer fish than
industry averages, monitoring its enclosures with cameras constantly,
and only raising species that are endemic to the waters it operates in.
Bien acknowledges the dangers. “We’re operating far off the shore, from
the coast,” he says. “And so by definition, that is difficult. It’s not
for the faint of heart.”

Kevin & Alison - in Guna Yala territory aka San Blas

The region is a comarca indígena (indigenous province) in northeast Panama (Official Gazette of Panama). Guna Yala is home to the indigenous people known as the Gunas. It is bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea, on the south by the Darién Province and Emberá-Wounaan, on the east by Colombia, and on the west by the province of Colón.

  GUNA YALA TAPASTRIES

During the first twenty years of the independent country of Panama, the Guna had serious differences with national governments, because they tried to eradicate their culture and their customs.

Among the most important traditions of the Guna people there are:

Children between 4 and 5 take part in ceremony of "inna-suit" or Baptism. It's involves their first haircut, which is attended by all the people in the community. The female is assigned a name in the Guna language. This name is next to the name given in the country's official language.

"Ico-inna", or "Feast of the Needle" in lack of a more accurate translation, is the feast of puberty where a young girl after her first menstruation participates in a party. The pubescent girl gets her septum pierced and a ring with coconut oil as an antiseptic is placed through it.

The Night Festival or "inna-mutiki" is a party where all the people get involved in the celebration of a wedding or a new marriage in the community. This festival usually lasts several days until the liquor stock garnered by the families is finished.

GUNA YALA TAPASTRIES

The governmental structure of Guna Yala is defined in Law 16 of 1953. The General Congress Guna is the highest political authority of Guna Yala. It consists of representatives of all communities in Guna Yala, and meets twice a year. Votes are taken by each sahila (elected leader) of the community. Guna Yala is politically subdivided into four corregimientos (districts), with a total of 51 comunidades 49 of which are located on islands of the San Blas Archipelago off the mainland coast.

Guna

Rudencio Garcia is the chief of the Holandesas islands area of Guna Yala. We have been so fortunate to get to know him and his 15 person family over the past four days. We have been filling their water jugs and giving them kitchen stores, and they have been supplying us with homemade bread (this morning), avocados, limes, lobster and of course, molas !

Kevin was invited into the chief's home, to see the tribe's way to cook fish. On his visit this morning he was seeking magazines. We don't have any but we did give him a Nordhavn 2022 calendar!

Monte Alban Animal Cracker

Large pre-Columbian archaeological site situated atop an artificially leveled ridge. It has an elevation of about 6,400 ft above mean sea level and rises 1,300 ft from the valley floor, in an easily defensible location.

Animal Cracker in MOnte Alban

Besides being one of the earliest cities of Mesoamerica, Monte Albán was important for nearly one thousand years as the eminent Zapotec socio-political and economic center. Founded at around 500 BC

Punta Balsa

Anchorage at Punta Balsa Panama

FROM PRIOR SEASON

After we left Golfito, we headed around Punta Burica for the elusive Punta Balsa . That was about a 65-mile leg. I say elusive because there wasn’t much of a punta to judge where the heck the anchorage was supposed to be. It is just a roadstead anchorage, and one that requires you to be pretty far off the shore due to shoal. We were pleasantly surprised to find it a decent anchorage, and we had a fairly pleasant night’s sleep, but it sure seemed strange. We anchored out front of a large hotel/estate that had an expansive low, orange wall all around the yard. Watch the depth finder as there’s some real shoal water about. We anchored at 08’04.643; 082’51.013, about 20 ft., about a quarter mile off shore, almost right on top of a little panga mooring. May want to give the mooring bouy more room, but it wasn’t in use and we didn’t get any middle of the night surprises. Our approach was somewhere near 08’03.40; 082’50.29. We really did some sniffing about until we found where to drop the anchor. Kind of weird, but not too rolly and not too windy.

CAN BE QUITE CALM

Punta Mala

Punta Mala Panama on a calm day in the summer / rainy season

If you stay very close to shore after punta mala, you may catch a counter current taking you up. ( from SY Outventure )

Punta Mala is no joke and earned it’s name. We encountered a trifecta of strong current, swell and wind against us. Rather than fighting it, we turned East and made a wide loop along Las Perlas. ( from SY Coddiwomple )

We had a good 4 hr sail last night from Isla Iguana. That was a quiet 1/3 of the passage. With the couple of sails during this passage from Golfito to Vista Mar and the lower RPMs we were able to make it all the way in 47 gal of fuel with about 4” in the tank to spare. Whew. One worry over.

Now to dive into the autopilot to see if I can figure out what failed. The reading and Raymarine tech support gave me some ideas on how to troubleshoot the issue. Based on a couple of electrical tests I did at Isla Iguana I was able to determine that the course computer was not the issue. I now believing it to be the clutch not engaging. It has power at the course computer, so I need to check at the clutch for power and a good connection. If those are good it will probably be that the clutch needs to be replaced. I’ve asked Raymarine if those are available as replacement parts. Finger’s crossed.

13) PANCHO VILLA

Francisco Villa born José Doroteo Arango Arámbula was initially a bandit, who became a general in the Mexican Revolution. He was a key figure in the revolutionary violence that forced out President Porfirio Díaz and brought Francisco I. Madero to power in 1911. When Madero was ousted by a coup led by General Victoriano Huerta in February 1913, he led anti-Huerta forces in the Constitutionalist Army 1913–14. The commander of the coalition was civilian governor of Coahuila Venustiano Carranza. After the defeat and exile of Huerta in July 1914, Villa broke with Carranza. Villa dominated the meeting of revolutionary generals that excluded Carranza and helped create a coalition government that was weak and ineffective. Emiliano Zapata and Villa became formal allies in this period, but it was only in principle. Like Zapata, Villa was strongly in favor of land reform, but his plans were not implemented when he had power.

Civil war broke out when Carranza challenged Villa. Villa was decisively defeated by Constitutionalist General Álvaro Obregón in summer 1915, and the U.S. aided Carranza directly against Villa in the Second Battle of Agua Prieta in November 1915. Much of Villa's army left after Villa's defeat on the battlefield and his lack of resources to buy arms and pay soldiers' salaries. Angered at the U.S. aid to Carranza, Villa conducted a raid on the border town of Columbus, New Mexico to goad the U.S. to invade Mexico in 1916-17. Despite a major contingent of soldiers and the latest military technology, the U.S. failed to capture Villa. When President Carranza was ousted from power in 1920, Villa negotiated an amnesty with interim President Adolfo de la Huerta and was given a landed estate, on the condition he retire from politics. He was assassinated in 1923. Although his faction did not prevail in the Revolution, he is one of its most charismatic and prominent figures.

SAMADHI
SAMADHI in Cartagena

A New Continent

Cross Posted from sailingsamadhi

We had difficult passage from the San Blas Islands to Colombia. It is only 200 miles but the direction of the wind, current, and waves all make it more than a little uncomfortable. And then when you add a night full of lightning all around the boat, it becomes not only uncomfortable but terrifying. However, we got through it and after an afternoon, a full night, and then another full day of sailing we arrived in Colombia. We sailed to a small group of islands 20 miles west of Cartagena so that we would not have to enter the very busy port in the dark and, so much more importantly, not have another terrifying night of lightning. As we approached the coast of Colombia just after dark we were greeted by the Colombia Navy wishing to come aboard. We lowered the sails and turned on the motor to hold a steady course. The expertly brought their RIB next to the boat and two officers in full combat gear came aboard. They were immediately greeted by Ranger’s ferocious bark and they told us that if he tries to bite them they would shoot him. Not exactly the best introduction but totally understandable. I put Ranger in a position in the back of the boat where he could be seen and could see but out of everyone’s way. The officers quickly set about getting all of our information and relaying it to authorities on shore or on a larger ship that we did not see. I kept us slowing moving to the spot we planned to anchor for the night as Ashley and Victoria handled the paperwork and translations. The RIB that brought them stayed on our flank ready to jump into action if it was needed. I definitely felt many eyes on me as I held our course. After the paperwork section of our evening the officers informed us of and welcomed us to, the inspection part of the night’s events. They asked to go below, asked us to keep Ranger upstairs and after relaying to their team on the RIB they went below. As soon as they got into the salon area of the boat they went right for the dry stores. They pulled out all the sugar, flour and baking soda. They opened each container and taste tested or smelled everything. They knew right where to go on a sailboat and they knew right how to access it. This was clearly not their first time. After about an hour of searching and taste testing they finished up. They offered to help put everything back but Ashley, Victoria and Alexander refused and told them it was no problem. We offered them all sodas or cold waters and they gladly accepted as it was very hot and they were fully kitted out in combat fatigues, helmets, masks and body armor. They also were both carrying assault rifles and side arms. The inside of our boat was in the high 80’s and they even looked in the engine room where the temps had to be around 110+ degrees. As they guzzled their cold beverages we loaded them up with extras and a few for the crew of the RIB. They apologized for the inconvenience and welcomed us to Colombia.

The next day we made our way to Cartagena to get a quick look at the city, rest and provision for our passage north to Hispaniola or Jamaica. Our plan was only to stay in Colombia a few days and then continue on once the weather allows. We spent the next few days exploring the old walled city. We walked on the walls from the 1600’s. We toured the old military forts from the time the Spanish ruled the area. We learned all about the history of the city, Colombia and the colonization of the 1500-1900’s. We found some amazing restaurants and met some wonderful people. Two days before we were to leave we were invited over to another cruising family’s boat. We had dinner and talked about each family’s travels. They have an 11 year old boy and a 14 year old girl so our kids matched up OK. The parents informed us about the quality work that is done in Colombia and the more than fair pricing. That got Ashley and I thinking. They gave us the number to a Colombian man who specializes in fiberglass work. They very next day he was on our boat with a partner of his who specializes in stainless steel welding and just like that we are staying another month here in Colombia. More to come on the project, our further exploration of the city, Alexander and Victoria’s local basketball team and our trip into the Amazon Rainforest, the Amazon River and the Southern Hemisphere.

Cuban Cigars are made in Cuba ...

Cuban cigars are cigars manufactured in Cuba from tobacco grown within that island nation. Historically regarded as among the world's “finest”, they are synonymous with the island's culture and contribute nearly one quarter of the value of all exports from the country. The filler, binder, and wrapper may come from different areas of the island, though much is produced in Pinar del Río province, in the regions of Vuelta Abajo and Semi Vuelta, as well as in farms in the Viñales region. All cigar production in Cuba is controlled by state-owned Cubatabaco. The Cuban cigar is also referred to as "El Habano".

2)  LINTON BAY MARINA 🇵🇦 PANAMA ASSAULT

https://safetyandsecuritynet.org/

The
owner/captain of a cruising yacht docked for one night at the Linton
Bay Marina, and was ashore having dinner at the restaurant when it began
to rain at about 2200HRS. He returned to his boat to close the hatches
and was overtaken by 4-5 men who were lying-in-wait in darkness inside.
They had already searched the boat, and immediately wrestled him to the
floor, and then held an automatic weapon to his head and began to demand
“the drugs” they believed he had brought from the San Blas. Once a
phone camera was shined in his face a third party seemed to conclude he
was the wrong person.

The
captain sustained minor injuries and was warned to remain quiet and on
the floor. The men departed after about 15 minutes in their small launch
that was tied alongside. Nothing was stolen. After some time the
captain returned to the restaurant and reported the incident.

Reports
were made to the Linton Bay Marina management, the Navy/Coast Guard
(Aeronaval) and the police. The victim was told the only security
cameras at the marina were pointed at the restaurant and not the dock.

Notes:

1
Entry is only permitted at high tide during daylight hours.
Daylight hours include civil twilight (about 40 minutes before
sunrise or 40 minutes after sunset). Morning tides are always better due
to the absence of wind waves.

Forecast:

We are on a diminishing spring tide cycle for the whole week.  Tides beginning May 5 are morning tides.

For
the forecast period the average primary swell is 4.2 feet and the
significant swell is 5.5.  Entry & exit looks good up to May 4.
The bar will be closed May 5 through May 8 due to a high swell
pushed by storms in the southern ocean.  Long term indications show
the bar will be closed until May 10.

 UPDATE ON CHECK IN PROCEDURES

Boca Chica

Update: we
checked into Panama yesterday with Carlos’ at Boca Chica. Carlos had us
send all our documents to him ahead of time via WhatsApp so he could
get the cruising permit done ahead of time. The officials had everything
ready when they arrived. It took probably an hour and we walked away
with all the paperwork done.

Carlos
had told us he would front the cash and we could pay him with a credit
card. He unfortunately wasn’t there yesterday, but someone called him
and all was good. I will pay Carlos with my credit card today when we
have his brother take us to David.

It
seems with all the delays with the cruising permit, Carlos has figured
out how to get it done ahead of time, so people don’t have to wait for
the slow delivery of the document. It’s nice to see things change for
the better.

🦜🍹Kyrie Well good news for the posse.  Both Mango and Kyrie were
able to self check-in in Playas Del Coco, Costa Rica today.

It
was a straightforward process with very friendly officials throughout.
First go to immigration, then bring the paperwork from them to the
port captain, fill our their forms and they will issue a form to take
to Aduana (Customs) at the airport.  Take a bus or Taxi ($80 for
the taxi round trip) to the airport, get your import permit for the boat
there, and head back to the port captain.  They will finalize your
paperwork and you're done.  For us it took from about 8am to 230pm
to get everything done.

16:26
🦜🍹Kyrie Total cost was zero, other than the taxi or bus fare.
No boat inspections of any type, and noone other than the boat
captain need be present.  Bring all your normal paperwork plus the
serial number for your main engine.

Detailed steps including gps coordinates of all spots required to do this are here

Customs Door

Go
to the arrival area security desk and ask them to call customs for
vessel check-in. The Customs officer will take your documents and copies
and return in  ~15 minutes with the forms signed.

16:27
🦜🍹Kyrie The only problem is Customs said their system had just been
hacked, and their higher ups directed that they can temporarily only
issue boat import permits for 10 days, upon which you need to renew.
They hope to have it resolved in the next week, and be able to
issue the remaining 80 days on our import permit next week.

16:29
🦜🍹Kyrie It did take all day, but saved us over $300 over the agent
fees.  Hopefully they will get the boat import per
mit issue fixed soon.

I
also forgot to mention that nothing at all was asked for regarding

Dinghy

Biggest
catch? Or unwanted visitor? We found this dinghy a float upside down
between San Andres and Providencia. We towed it Providencia on April 17.
We sustained damage to our boat in the hand off. 😕 We really hope the
owner gets it back.

It was turned over to the Colombian Armada, we were leaving the area.

San Blas

Dec 23 we leave for San Blas it's a nice quiet trip of 45 miles along the
coast of Panama. On the way, keep an eye out for a shoal that is only
just under water. Once arrived, the environment exceeds our
expectations. A choice of pancake islands, overgrown with palms and here
and there a hut lies in front of us. It's like a fairy tale. So
idyllic. Here too we have to navigate well, there is only a narrow
passage in the reef. I stand in front of the point and give directions
but am distracted for a moment by a mother with baby dolphin. Jeroen is
not happy but I have to enjoy this for a while. Everything goes well and
soon our anchor is anchored in the beautiful sandy bottom in a depth of
3 meters. The ideal anchorage. I've been looking forward to this moment
for 2 years, and now that we're here it exceeds all my expectations.
Everywhere I look around me I see islands like this. Some a bit bigger,
others tiny. I didn't think the area would be so compact. We are just
sitting in the cockpit enjoying our view when a boat with a Kuna Indian
comes alongside. He offers us Molas. Those are handmade patchwork
patches. Mostly with Indian characters, but also very cheerful with
parrots and turtles. I pick 2 and an animal mask for Charlie. The next
day we go to see the islands. First a small one, against which we lie
and later a somewhat larger one. On the small one are 2 huts where an
older woman is busy with a broom. She is not very approachable and stays
away from us. After 10 minutes you are bored and we feel that the woman
is watching us. Then go to that bigger island. There are some more
huts, but they turn out to be holiday houses. When we walk there, we
notice how much waste there is everywhere. Just human waste. Cans of
bottles and especially a lot of plastic. Incomprehensible on such a
small island, you can walk around it in half an hour. So paradisiacal
and then nobody cares about that. There is hardly anyone on this island
either. A few tourists and an Indian who quickly retreats between the
palm trees. A little disappointed we go back to the boat and get ready
to join the Pitou. Tomorrow is Christmas Day and we will celebrate
Christmas together.

The Christmas party is a great success. Pitou provides a fantastic
Christmas breakfast and we take care of the meal. Our first Christmas
without our kids, and that feels a bit empty. The weather is not really
cooperating. Lots of showers and lots of wind. Then the generator that
is not working properly. Makes us restless. Soon we will make a sailing
trip of 5000 miles and the boat must be in top condition. The islands,
beautiful as they are, don't have much else to offer. In the afternoon
we are visited by 2 Kuna women with their children. They want to come on
board and we're okay with that. Buckets with Mola's are towed on board.
And while I struggle through the piles of Mola's, Jeroen is the perfect
host, handing out cookies and apple juice and trying to get in touch
with the 3 girls. We still have Stila caps and they will all get one.
When I finally have selected a few Mola's they ask for more, such as
soap, shampoo, reading glasses, a dress and even a bottle of rum. We
fulfill almost all wishes, except the bottle of rum. Furthermore, we
cannot get in touch, partly due to the language barrier. It was a
learning experience. I think that we cruisers, these people with their
old culture, are ruining them by visiting these islands so massively
with all our riches. That feeling is reinforced when we go to another
island a day later, together with Machiel, to take aerial photos with
the drone. There are 3 young Kuna men on the island and they are drunk.
They are there without a boat so dropped off with many cans of beer. The
waste is also noticeable here. They are pushy and sassy, and the
atmosphere is a bit grim. When we want to leave after an hour, Machiel
misses his sharpened sunglasses. After fifteen minutes of searching we
give up and are sure that the boys have pushed back the glasses.
Unfortunately. This together with the problems of the generator have
seen it here and Pitou is also ready on the San Blas. In the afternoon
we decide to go back to the Lemon cays and the next day to Linton bay.
We will be celebrating New Years there.

14) CAPTURED "GREEN FLASH"
BAHIA PANAMA, GUANACASTE  🇨🇷  COSTA RICA

🇺🇸 GREEN FLASH

The
green flash and green ray are meteorological optical phenomena that
sometimes occur transiently around the moment of sunset or sunrise. When
the conditions are right, a distinct green spot is briefly visible
above the upper rim of the Sun's disk; the green appearance usually
lasts for no more than two seconds. Rarely, the green flash can resemble
a green ray shooting up from the sunset or sunrise point.

Green
flashes occur because the Earth's atmosphere can cause the light from
the Sun to separate, or refract, into different colors. Green flashes
are a group of similar phenomena that stem from slightly different
causes, and therefore, some types of green flashes are more common than
others.[1]

EL SALVADOR LAND ALERT

On
March 27, El Salvadoran lawmakers declared a state of emergency at
President Bukele’s request, expanding police powers and curtailing civil
liberties.

The move followed a weekend in which 87 people were killed in gang-related violence.

The
measure restricted free assembly, allowed for arrests without a
warrant, and increased sentences for gang membership to up to 45 years.

Police said they captured 590 gang members Saturday, and had made 16,053 arrests since the start of the crackdown.

Notes:

1
Entry is only permitted at high tide during daylight hours.
Daylight hours include civil twilight (about 40 minutes before
sunrise or 40 minutes after sunset). Morning tides are always better due
to the absence of wind waves.

Forecast:

We are in a spring tide cycle for the whole week.  Tides beginning April 27 are afternoon  tides.

For
the forecast period the average primary swell is 3.8 feet and the
significant swell is 5.0.  Entry & exit looks good for the
whole week.

8) LAYING UP IN THE TROPICS

We've had Avant offshore for a few years now and have developed a routine for
laying her up for the off season. It's a fair amount of work, but pays
dividends in letting us come back to a vessel that's not suffering from
mold or mildew, and hasn't degraded (much) from the weather when we're
away. We have set Avant up to wait for us on the hard and in the water,
and each has its unique requirements.

Avant

Mold

Mold is perhaps the most pernicious hazard for a laid up boat in the
tropics. If it gets a foothold, the warm, moist interior of the boat is
the perfect environment for it to grow, and it will grow everywhere, on
any surface. To forestall its growth, we clean the interior aggressively
and then spray all surfaces with a mixture of straight vinegar mixed
with a drop of dish soap per litre/quart (the dish soap is a surfactant
and stops the vinegar from beading), wipe them with a cloth wet with the
same mixture and allow the vinegar to dry in place. The ph value of
vinegar is antithetical to mold growth, and it simply won't start where
there is vinegar on the surface. The smell is overwhelming on
application, but fades in an hour or so, and is undetectable on our
return. We also mist curtains and cushions with the same mixture, spray
liberally in the bilge, and leave a few bowls filled with just vinegar
(no soap) in various places around the boat to evaporate while we're
away. We use at least a couple for gallons for this process.

We prop cushions on their sides/edges just before we go to allow maximum
air circulation, and leave all cupboard doors ajar as well. Clothing and
bedding is dried in the sun and then plastic bagged before stowing
below so it can't get damp.

If we're on shore power, we leave a cheap 110 volt fan below to circulate
the air, and if not we leave our Nicro day/night solar vents running.
One year in El Salvador we were able to leave an air conditioner
running, which was great, and where Avant is now (Panama) we have a
dehumidifier running 24/7 to control the moisture.

If you choose 'electronic remediation' (dehumidifier or air conditioning)
for mold control, you need to plan for power outages and recognize that
at the dockside or in the yard shore, power will likely be somewhat
unreliable and will suffer multiple outages over the season. Fancy new
style microprocessor controlled units will usually not restart after a
power outage or voltage drop; old style, bog-simple units with
mechanical switches usually will restart after an outage (and as a
bonus, they're usually cheaper, too). A dehumidifier or stand alone AC
will need a drain point, such as a galley or head sink drain, while a
window style AC can be set up to drain overboard or through cockpit
drains.

Tarps

Tarps are used for a couple of things: to keep sun off the decks and thus
control heat, and to keep the rain off portions of the deck. We use
them, but under the tarps we do get algae on deck. There are cheap tarps
and not so cheap tarps, and the cheap blue type last mere days or at
best weeks in the intense sun and can't withstand summer squalls and
storms. We buy 'good ones' (usually they're not blue, and sometimes are
silver on one or both sides), get them double the size we need, and put
them on doubled up. The side exposed to the sun will rot and fail in the
UV, but the second layer will usually last out the season. We don't use
the grommets on the tarps, but instead gather the fabric of the tarp
around a ping pong ball and secure that with a constricting loop knot (a
topsail sheet bend tied back on the bight). The grommets are the first
point of failure. After a season, the tarps are garbage.

Run the tarps as low as possible so they have the lowest windage and cover the most deck area.

We also have fitted sunshade material awnings that ride low to the decks
and are secured to the toe rails and cover the decks. They shade the
decks where we don't have tarps, and where they ride over the traps they
add UV protection for the tarps. Sunshade material is widely available
at Home Depot and other DIY shops, usually in the garden department.
It's easy to sew on any machine, and the plastic grommets they sell for
it are easy to apply and seem to last well. As with tarps, grommets are
the first potential point of failure, but as we have them every foot
along the edge, they spread the load well.

Bugs

Of course, we live in fear of a bug infestation of some sort while away.
We buy cockroach bait (apparently the kind that comes in a tube like
toothpaste is best) and roach hotels and place them around the boat. We
use the whole tube, as this is not the place for half measures. We have
found two dead roaches and no live ones aboard on our return in the 14
years we've been laying up. We shudder to think how many we might have
found without the poison set out.

Food

The temperatures in the interior of the boat will be extreme: in the Sea of
Cortez, interior temperatures of 140 degreesf/60 degreesc are typically
reached daily for a boat on the hard for weeks at a time, and 120
degreesf/49 degreesc for a boat in the water. We have had cans of food
explode from the heat, and an unopened bottle of ketchup left aboard
cooked in the heat to turn the rich dark brown colour of bbq sauce. For
unopened food we want to try to keep, we get small plastic bin liner
bags and after emptying and dosing the interior of the lockers with
their vinegar wipe-down, we double bag the food in small batches and
stow back in the lockers. If a can explodes it will do so inside the bag
and the mess will be contained to the half dozen or so items sharing
the bag with it.

Plastic

Items made of plastic do not fare well. The heat and UV bake them. For items
below decks, we wet out a cloth with ArmorAll, Aerospace 303 or a
similar plastic treatment (easily found at auto stores) and wet wipe
them down. For items on deck that can't be removed and brought below, we
treat them with protectant, wrap them in a layer of paper towel, wrap
aluminum foil over that (two layers of cheap tin foil seems to work
better than a single layer of thicker expensive stuff) and then secure
the tin foil with liberal amounts of duct tape (being very careful the
duct tape only adheres to the tin foil and not to anything under it). On
our return we find the duct tape has usually been reduced to a skeleton
of the reinforcement fabric and is easily removed.

We also wrap winches, blocks and all other deck hardware in a similar
fashion. UV will destroy the ball bearings in ball bearing blocks.

Zippers and Snaps

Zippers and snaps like to corrode shut while the boat is laid up. We rub them
with cheap dollar store chapstick or lip balm (cheap lip balm is usually
a mix of waxes and petroleum oils like Vaseline) to increase the
chances they will work when we return.

Elastic

Elastic will no longer be after a season of baking in the heat. Shock cords
should not be used to secure anything as they will perish. Elastic in
clothing and swimming suits may not be elastic on your return.

Lightning

Grounding. Most vessels are poorly grounded, and their grounding is ineffective
when hauled (yes, you can be struck by lightning when on the hard). You
can ground your boat quickly and simply with a set of jumper cables (or
add these to increase the grounding)

If in the water, we buy a set of cheap but fairly thick jumper cables.
Separate into two wires. Remove one clamp from each wire, strip back a
couple or six inches of insulation and 'fray' the end (or keep the clamp
and clamp it to a 1'x1' metal plate) to make a better ground connection
with the water. We attach remaining clamp to a top shroud or other bit
of metal that connects to near the masthead and throw the frayed/plated
end in the water. One cable on the port side, one cable on the starboard
side.

If on the hard, separate cables and attach one to the top shrouds and Jack
stands on the port side, the other to the same points on starboard.

In either case, the cables will be trash at the end of the season, as they
are not designed for continuous outdoor use. Brushing clamps with wax,
Vaseline or any other topical protectant helps them rust less and look
better longer. Even if you *think* your boat might be/is well grounded,
these jumper cable tricks will ensure/increase the protection.

We gather up all portable and easily de-mounted electronics (hand held VHF
and GPS units, epirbs, led flashlights, portable radios, etc.) and wrap
them in paper towel, then in tin foil, then in plastic food wrap
(secured with masking tape), and then place them in the oven as a kind
of double faraday cage. We disconnect all antennas and easily unplugged
items like chartplotters, AIS, VHF, etc. and leave them disconnected and
just hanging to disrupt possible paths for lightning.

Batteries

Small batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, silver cells like A76, CR2025 and CR2032,
etc.) are removed from whatever they are powering, gathered,
inventoried and given away. They won't be any good when we come back,
and we need to know how many and of what type we will need to bring when
we return.

The ships batteries (house and starting) we leave connected to our solar
array for charging while we're away, to make sure power is available to
our bilge pumps. We disconnect (switch off at the panel) the shore side
charger as superfluous.

Bilge Pumps

We inspect and test our bilge pumps. Avant will take on a bit of water
through the mast, and other leaks may appear over the season. We want a
bone-dry bilge to keep interior humidity down. We know of several
cruisers who have had a battery die due to bilge pump pumping, and
another couple who lost their boat to flooding while on the hard (their
cockpit drains blocked and water flooded in the companionway in a
tropical storm). If your boat has a garboard plug, you can leave it out
if you're on the hard, and if it doesn't and the concept works for your
hull form you can consider adding one.

Through Hulls

We close all through hulls and tank vents and stuff stainless steel
scrubbies or rolled up green scrubbies in them if we're on the hard. The
scrubbies prevent bugs from nesting in the holes. Some cruisers use
bromine tablets (for hot tubs) in their raw water strainers to
discourage growth there.

Head and Holding Tank

We empty the holding tank and pump in 1 - 1 half gallons or so of vinegar
and a liberal amount of Pinõl or Lysol type cleanser. Better to have
that bake in the heat than what was in there before, and a completely
dry tank will form concrete-like deposits.

Sails and Canvas

Sails and canvas are removed, inspected, repaired, cleaned, and neatly folded to be stowed below.

Engine

Our engine enjoys an oil change, fluid top up and wipe-down with an oily
rag before we go, and we leave the compartment door ajar so air can
circulate there too. Many cruisers do a freshwater flush of the exhaust
as well, but we don't bother. Outboards are freshwater flushed, given
their annual service, and run dry of fuel before stowing below.

Fuel Tanks

Diesel tanks are filled to the top and treated with biocide (BioBore or
similar). Gas tanks are emptied, the gasoline given away, and the
plastic tanks are treated with ArmorAll or similar. We don't bother
trying to 'stabilize' gasoline for storage, the quantity doesn't justify
it. Jerry cans are emptied and treated with ArmorAll or similar. The
empty jerry cans and gas tanks are stored below.

Propane

We simply shut off the propane at the tanks.

Water Tanks

Water tanks are emptied. When we return, we treat them as if contaminated as
recommended in this article. The water pump (and all other breakers save
the bilge pumps) is shut off.

Mooring Lines and Fenders

If we're in the water, we double all mooring lines and add chafe guard (we
use fire hose) at all chafe points. We buy cheap children's T-shirts
and slip them over our fenders as extra chafe guard/ UV protection,
securing them at the top end with small line or zip ties.

Even if you have a hired 'boat watcher' they're unlikely to be 100%
available to come to your aid in a storm. They may be looking after
multiple boats, or the roof may be blowing off of their house (or their
mother's house) in the same storm that threatens your boat. You need to
be secured for a storm.

Dinghy

We have a RIB inflatable dinghy, and some years we have been able to
secure covered storage for it at the marina or yard we're at, which is
best. Other years we secured it to the deck upside down, inflated to
about ¾ normal pressure, spaced off the deck with dollar store pool
noodles and covered with a tarp. Protection from the sun while ensuring
its wrapping can't hold water against the fabric are the keys to
success. If you can deflate yours and stow it below, that's even better.

Bottom Cleaning

If you store in the water, you will need to arrange for regular bottom
cleaning. The interval will be determined by local conditions. Make sure
the cleaner is reliable, has references, and sends pictures or other
proof the job is being done: we know cruisers who found their cleaners
simply cashed the payments and didn't do any cleaning until just before
their return.

Contact Info

Post a card in the window with local contact information for your
boat-watcher (if you have one) and your contact info back home: name,
email, phone numbers.

When we return, we find Avant fresh and dirty, needing a good wash after we
enjoy a Christmas-like morning: like an unwrapping party of all her
tinfoiled appurtenances. After some reassembly, we're ready to cruise
another season.

10) VISA  RENEWAL  BORDER RUN
🇵🇦 PANAMA BOCAS DEL TORO TO COSTA RICA 🇨🇷

Vitesse

Above
is a picture of a mother bay nursing her baby. Pretty awesome
experience to 🎈witness and it was just outside the house we were
staying at. We also had a two toed sloth climbing the fence. AMAZING! As
you know… I love sloths.

Sloth

Jeff
and I did a visa run to Costa Rica. Currently in Puerto Viejo. We took
Caribe Shuttle from Bocas del Toro to Sixaola, Panama. We then checked
out of Panama, walked across the boarder and then checked into Costa
Rica. Very simple and easy. This is our second time doing this.

Border Run

From
my first email you can tell our visa run into Costa Rica was easy. The
return was the same. Our shuttle picked us up at our Airbnb (ran a bit
late) and off to the border we went. It is approximately a 45 minute
drive from Puerto Viejo to Sixaola.

Once
at the border you must first pay a 9 dollar tax per person. After
paying the tax you check out of Costa Rica, walk back across the border
and check into Panama. We were prepared with an airline ticket
(refundable that we purchased that morning to show we were leaving the
country in 6 months) and we had done our health visa to re-enter
Panama(which they never asked for.) it was very easy and straight
forward. Then back on a bus to Alimirante and the boat back to Bocas. It
was very easy and simple.

13) ALONG THE PANAMA POSSE ROUTE
🇺🇸 CASTILLO SAN MARCOS, ST AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA

🇺🇸 CASTILLO SAN MARCOS

Matanzas Bay in the city of St. Augustine, Florida.

The
Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental
United Statesand is located on the western shore of Matanzas Bay in the
city of St. Augustine, Florida. The Castillo was designed by the Spanish
engineer Ignacio Daza and construction begn in 1672, 107 years after
the city’s founding by Spanish Admiral and conquistador Pedro Menéndez
de Avilés, when Florida was part of the Spanish Empire.

The roots of the Castillo’s history reach back to the years just after Christopher Columbus’s final transatlantic voyage, when conquistadors carved out a vast and wealthy overseas empire for Spain, first in the Caribbean and then on the mainlands of Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru. Products of these tropical and mountainous territories brought high prices on the Continent, and Spanish galleons sailed home laden with exotic dyes, sugar, tobacco, chocolate, pearls, hardwoods, and silver and gold. These so-called “treasure fleets” made Spain the most powerful and envied nation in Renaissance Europe.

Thanks
to the travels of Ponce de Leon in 1513, Spanish navigators knew that
the best return route from Spain’s rich Caribbean possessions was along
the Gulf Stream, through the Bahama Channel, and past the shores of
Florida. The Spanish knew they must defend this peninsula to prevent
enemies from using its harbors as havens from which to raid the passing
treasure fleets.

We
were transiting San Blas to Cartegena, but I'll share our experience
checking out in Linton with others too. Port captain is right at the
marina in a shipping container office. Easy, peasy $11.50 for the
international zarpe. It to about 15 minutes. We didn't have to surrender
the cruising permit. He didn't have any comment on how long until we
left Panama. Just mentioned that immigration was back in Portobello. We
told him we'd check out with immigration in Porvenir and he was good
with that. The following day we checked out with immigration in Porvenir
($20/person) and they gave us 84 hours to exit Panama. We also got the
Kuna cruising permit, which was $100 for our boat and family of 4. We
didn't get a salida crew list from immigration and Panama didn't ask to
see one.

5) BOARDED BY OFFICIALS IN CARTAGENA
🇨🇴 COLOMBIA

We
got stopped by the Colombia armada as we came in to anchor last night
outside Club Nautico de Cartagena @ 10° 24.5483' N 075° 32.5433' W . We
were not checked in to the country but had our agent's contact info
(whom they called as we didn't have our security entrance # yet, she had
it but we didn't have cell service to retrieve it). They asked to do a
thorough inspection of the boat. Came down into the salon and
immediately took cushions off settee and dinette and dove into the
lockers where I keep the extra provisions. They took every bag of flour,
sugar, maseca, and pancake mix out and opened them up. I was thinking
"here we go they are going to toss the boat". After they were satisfied
that my baking goods were just that they quickly glanced in the cabins,
heads, engine room, etc without opening a drawer or locker and
apologized for inconveniencing us. They were beyond professional and
polite. We gave them cold coca colas and counted ourselves lucky. They
even told us where we could safely anchor for the night that wasn't on
the chart. As we have often found being polite and respectful and using
as much Spanish as possible probably helped make this a smooth
transaction. And unlike USCG didn't ask about the holding tanks, garbage
placards or if I had the rules & regulations book accessible :-)

For
anyone interested in El Salvador and the Gulfo De Fonseca, we
discovered Isla Meanguera is a point of entry and exit for El Salvador.
There is a small village on the east side of the island with a
port captain that can chack you in and out, both in the same day if
requested.  Check in / out fees were as follows:. 90 day visa (only
necessary for adults) $12 each.  30 day import fee for the boat,
$30.  International zarpe $40.  Great cell service (5 bars of
4G on Claro) here as well.

Also, the south anchorage on Meanguera gives great protection for everything but southerly conditions.

The port captain does come out to you in a panga!  😁

Happy
to answer your questions!  Very weak Spanish but the official had a
helper that spoke decent english.  All very friendly.  Yes,
it does appear to be an international point of entry for El Salvador.
Two boats checked in while we were there, one out of Panama, the
other Mexico.  We came here from Bahia Del Sol with a El Salvador
Zarpe and they were fine with that s staying for a bit even though we've
technically already checked out of the country.  There is only one
town on the island, on the east side where the port captain is.
The anchorage is nice with good holding, but completely exposed if
a Papagayo blows.  The south side of the island has a more
protected bight we have now spent 2 nights in.  It's beautiful, but
completely open from the south if the weather comes in strong.
Nice beach with just a couple fishing shacks.  Rumor is you
can buy lobster from the fishermen on the beach, but we haven't tried
that yet. The officials did come out to our boats, but did want you too
come into their office to get everything properly stamped.
