🇬🇹 TIKAL – Guatemala
The ruins of an ancient city, which was likely to have been called Yax Mutal, found in a rainforest in Guatemala. It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is located in the archaeological region of the Petén Basin in what is now northern Guatemala. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
Tikal has been completely mapped and covered an area greater than 16 square kilometres which included about 3,000 structures.
The topography of the site consists of a series of parallel limestone ridges rising above lowlands.
The great metropolis of Teotihuacan in the Valley of Mexico appears to have decisively intervened in Tikal politics.
A long-running rivalry between Tikal and Calakmul began in the 6th century, with each of the two cities forming its own network of mutually hostile alliances arrayed against each other in what has been likened to a long-running war between two Maya superpowers. The kings of these two capitals adopted the title kaloomte’, a term that has not been precisely translated but that implies something akin to “high king”
🇭🇳 HONDURAS ROATAN IS OPEN
Patrick and Lisa on Orion, checking in at Barefoot Cay Marina, Roatan 16 February, 2021.
Once we had heard that Honduras was opening back we contacted several agents and found the fees to be pretty standard across the board at approx U.S. $500 (a clear in / clear out inclusive service). Barefoot Cay Marina coordinated the entire check in for us.
In addition to the typical requirements for clearing in, there are now three additional requirements a boat will need to fulfill.
1) Negative covid results within 72 hours of checking inc conducted at Livingston, the morning of our check out from Guatemala.
2) Pre-check form (ours was completed by the agent and included in the quoted fee).
We found the form at
https://prechequeo.inm.gob.hn/Login
And, you can register and fill out the form there.
3) A permission letter from Copeco/Sinager (National Risk Management Agency) is required prior to entering Roatan via yacht.
This process takes approximately 7 to 10 days at this time, and the permission is for 90 days.
Once all of our pre-check requirements were met (including negative covid test results) and we had our Sinager permission letter in hand, we were on our way.
We arrived in Roatan and were met by our agent at the Barefoot Cay marina. We were then taken by car to the immigration office in Coxen Hole. Here we were finger printed and our picture was taken. No line ups and it was very quick in and out.
Our agent dropped us back at the marina where we were free to wander the property and he returned to Coxen Hole to finish up at the Port Captains office.
We received our final paperwork (Yacht permit) from him early the next morning.
Barefoot Cay Marina is very small with very few slips and will not likely be able to accommodate more than one or two boats on top of what is already spoken for here… But, they have bent over backwards to accommodate us, including the 20% Panama Posse discount. And the diving is AWESOME!

Inspiring music on the Panama Posse 🇨🇺
Buena Vista Social Club
Buena Vista Social Club is an ensemble of Cuban musicians established in 1996 to revive the music of pre-revolutionary Cuba. The group was named after the club in the Buenavista quarter of Havana, a popular music venue in the 1940s. To showcase the popular styles of the time, such as son, bolero and danzón, they recruited a dozen veteran musicians, many of whom had been retired.
Buena Vista Social Club – Chan Chan (Official Video)
The group’s album was recorded in March 1996 and quickly becoming an international success, which prompted the ensemble to perform with a full line-up in Amsterdam and New York. German movie director Wim Wenders captured the performance on film for a documentary—also called Buena Vista Social Club—that included interviews with the musicians which conducted in Havana.
Ibrahim Ferrer Candela Grammy Awards 1999
The success of both the album and film sparked a revival of interest in traditional Cuban music and Latin American music in general. Some of the Cuban performers later released well-received solo albums and recorded collaborations with stars from different musical genres.
🇨🇺 Buena Vista Social Club – El Carretero
As a music venue, the Buenavista Social Club experienced the peak of Havana’s nightclub life, when charangas and conjuntos played several sets every night, going from club to club over the course of a week. Often, bands would dedicate songs to the clubs where they played. In the case of the Buenavista Social Club, an eponymous danzón was composed by Israel López “Cachao” in 1938, and performed with Arcaño y sus Maravillas.
