20·21 PANAMA POSSE FLEET UPDATE 2020-12-20 HAPPY HOLIDAYS !
An extremely attractive 1745 map of the Mexican harbor of Zihuatanejo Bay by George Anson.
Today Zihuatanejo is a stunningly beautiful resort area on the Pacific in the state of Guerrero (about 108 nm northwest of Acapulco).
This area was originally named Cihuatlán in Aztec, which means “Place of Women”, referring to the matriarchal society that dominated the region in pre-Columbian times.
Details the harbor showing mountains, waterways, and trees as well as offering detailed depth soundings and nautical references.

SEASONAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
As we change from fall to winter, the weather across the Panama Posse route shifts as well.
Tehuantepec winds become more frequent, last longer, and are stronger. There are still weather windows to cross, but you may need to wait a bit longer for one you like.
Papagayos winds increase and become more consistent. The area can still be transited (and enjoyed!) but more caution is recommended (and perhaps more reefs in the main).
The western Caribbean becomes positively sporty. The image below (from Altimeter Data Products (noaa.gov)) shows the satellite measured wave heights from January 2020, up to well over 20’ on the posse route up ‘pirate alley’. For the next two to three months, any travel in the western Caribbean should only be attempted with a very favourable weather window, and with the advance knowledge that it’s unlikely to be a pleasant passage. The combination of the ‘Christmas winds’ (reinforced trades) and northers caused by high pressure moving across the southern USA and northern Gulf of Mexico combine to make the area much less fun than most sailors want to have.
Getting to Colombia from Panama is usually ok as long as you pick a decent weather window, and duck south to stay in the lee of the Colombian headland.
To sail north from Panama to Jamaica / Cayman Islands or Bay of Islands Honduras
Jimmy Cornell recommends mid-April to end of June, but it really depends on what kind of weather year it is. This year the season of heavy winds and waves ran late, so later passage would have been better. This is one of the toughest passages for the Panama Posse, so good timing can really help.
