Atlantic, Caribbean, North and South Pacific โ the Ocean Posse is Already There
With members crossing oceans , going though canals, rounding capes, and dropping anchor in far-flung harbors, the Ocean Posse gives you real-world benefits and real-world backup.
WHAT OUR MEMBERS SAY
“What you said way back in the beginning is true:so may things to see, and we go right by them. These amazing countries and places and cities and people usually have to get there. So our philosophy is we want to see as much as we can. We have no timeline so we have the luxury of doing this without a schedule. We had a great time with the rendezvous in Barra & we did some really nice l add on tours from Huatulco and Chiapas. We have been some really great amazing and beautiful places. Not to be obsequious, but I got to say this Posse organization has been so great” – MV Tidings of Joy
Very happy to report after many experiments we have the starboard engine running and still running after a few hours, huge accomplishment but will be in touch with a professional to confirm our confidence.
Our other big accomplishment is defrosting our fridge/freezer at sea with MacGyver techniques. We believe this should be added to the Posse Awards. So many brilliant MacGyver saves that literally saved the boat day!

7) MUST SEE ISLA DEL CAรO ๐จ๐ท COSTA RICA
08ยฐ 43.2′ N 083ยฐ52.433′ W
c, a pristine gem off Costa Rica’s southwestern Pacific coast, is a sanctuary of ecological and archaeological significance. Situated approximately 20 kilometers west of Bahรญa Drake on the Osa Peninsula, this small island encompasses about 3.2 square kilometers of land and is surrounded by 52 square kilometers of marine reserve .
Historical and Cultural Significance
Archaeological evidence indicates that Isla del Caรฑo was inhabited by pre-Columbian civilizations, notably the Diquรญs culture, between 500 and 1500 AD. The island served as a significant ceremonial and burial site, as evidenced by the discovery of intricately carved stone spheres, or “bolas de piedra,” which are unique to the region . These spheres, some of which remain on the island, reflect the advanced craftsmanship and cultural practices of the indigenous peoples.
Ecological Significance
Designated as a biological reserve in 1978, Isla del Caรฑo is renowned for its rich biodiversity and well-preserved ecosystems . The island’s terrestrial environment is characterized by dense tropical rainforest, home to various plant species and a limited number of land animals. However, it is the surrounding marine environment that truly sets Isla del Caรฑo apart.
The waters around the island harbor some of the most extensive and healthiest coral reef formations along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. These reefs support a diverse array of marine life, including manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles, humpback whales, and numerous fish species . The area is particularly significant for humpback whales, which migrate from both the northern and southern hemispheres to breed and give birth in these warm waters
Diving and Snorkeling Paradise
Isla del Caรฑo is a premier destination for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. The clear waters offer visibility ranging from 20 to 60 feet, providing an excellent opportunity to observe the vibrant marine life and coral formations . Divers frequently encounter white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, and a multitude of tropical fish species. The island’s dive sites, such as El Bajo del Diablo and El Ancla, are renowned for their unique underwater landscapes and biodiversity .
Conservation Efforts and Regulations
As a protected area, Isla del Caรฑo has strict regulations to preserve its delicate ecosystems. The number of daily visitors is limited, and activities such as fishing, collecting marine life, or removing any natural artifacts are prohibited. These measures ensure the ongoing protection of the island’s natural and cultural resources for future generations and creates jobs for tour operators.
Costa Rica is renowned for its high frequency of lightning strikes and Isla del Caรฑo is indeed noted for its significant lightning activity. Some sources suggest that it receives more lightning strikes than any other location in Central America . Local lore and historical accounts attribute this phenomenon to the island’s status as a sacred pre-Columbian burial site, adding a layer of mystique to its natural characteristic
Thereโs a longโstanding local legend that Sir Francis Drake, the famed Elizabethan privateer, stopped in the waters around Bahรญa Drake and Isla del Caรฑo during his 1579 Pacific voyage, and that he may have buried some of his plunder there. Nearby named Drake’s Bay is a testament to that.
Drake was active along the Pacific coast in early 1579, capturing Spanish vessels and making repairs and resupply stops. He certainly touched on Costa Ricaโs Osa Peninsula region en route to New Albion (California)
One account even names Caรฑo Island as a spot where he took on water and provisions before sailing on
Many tour sites and guides repeat that Drake โhid one of his plundered treasuresโ in Drake Bay or on Isla del Caรฑo, but none cite contemporary 16thโcentury documents. It seems to derive from romantic retellings rather than archival evidence
Serious historians of Drakeโs circumnavigation make no firm claim of treasure buried in Costa Rica; their focus is on his documented captures of Spanish treasure ships further south (Ecuador, Peru) and his landings in California and no authenticated diary entry, logbook note or eyewitness deposition confirms a cache on Isla del Caรฑo.
Predict wind shows live lighting strikes and short history of recent strikes
Predict wind also gives you a forecast warning that the cape index will go high and alerts
On board our catamaran we have a lightning detector that warns us visually and audibly that lets us know lighting is nearby
The levels are: Green (25 miles), Blue (16 miles), and Red (6 miles or less) and Talos is a sponsor of the Ocean Posse so you get a discount on these detectors
Here are the 4 paths we deploy from the top of the mast to the water and seafloor below
We have a lighting road attached with an aluminum base plate on top of the mast higher than the VHF antenna and about 1/2 inch thick 6 feet tall
Next we attach thick copper car charging battery cables ( we fray the sides that go into the water ) and attach the crocodile clips to the base-plates of the standing rigging chain plates
In addition if we are in the marina we deploy our anchor – and drop it with extra chain on the seafloor – not hooking it – just grounding i We attach 2 wires to the base of the mast one with a long thick cable dangling in the water and ewe deploy this though the trampoline netting and we attach and loop a wire around the base of the mast and attach it to the anchor chain
We also have a galvanic Isolator – not necessarily lightning related – but we do have one When off the boat for an extended period of time we turn off the big victron inverter charger and unplug all the electronics such as chartplotters, and network wires and turn off and unplug starlink

11) MEET THE FLEET SY YGGRDASIL ๐ณ๐ด Espen, Emilie + Anicke Brandt-Kjelsen
The name of our boat is Yggdrassil, it is the tree of life in norse mythology. Or world tree. It shows how everything is interconnected.
Espen and I have talked about it back and forth for 20 years, and this was a good time. For us it was important to do it as a family. We embrace the way of living and being so close to the elements. One thing it has changed is that we will not go back to the high demand manager jobs we left to go cruising. We have made great new friends of all ages, sadly most of them are not crossing the Pacific but going back home from the Caribbean. I believe this lifestyle make us grateful and peaceful. We also learn that there is always a 1000 jobs that should have been done on the boat and they usually take much longer than anticipated
Anicke
I’m Captain Anicke, one of the leaders aboard SV Yggdrasil. Sailing has been a cherished part of my life since childhood, spending every summer with my family on the water. As a conservation diver, my passion for the ocean and environment runs deep. Previously, I worked as a scientist and now continue my journey as a leader dedicated to sustainability.
Espen
I am Espen the captain of Yggdrasil. I may lack experience, but have an eagerness to learn and already a great passion for sailing. I am an experienced data analyst who love to explore all kinds of different adventures, from skydiving, skiing, biking, motorbiking and now sailing.
For us this is a shared adventure. And we really hope we will meet new friends to share great moments with. We like to think of ourselves as easygoing and able to get along with all kinds of personalities. During our Atlantic crossing, we took on some crewโincluding a girl we hadnโt met or sailed with before. It didnโt really work out, and the experience taught us an important lesson: itโs crucial to make sure everyoneโs expectations are aligned before setting off.
We anchored off a small island in San Blas, Panamaโcompletely alone, with no other boats in sight. Just two humble houses stood on the shore. We took the dinghy in, curious, and were welcomed by a man who invited us to sit and handed each of us a fresh coconut to drink.
He explained that the island was cared for by seven Kuna families, each taking turns for a week at a time. This was his week, and he was here with his family. A teacher by trade, he shared stories about their traditions and way of life. We stayed for three days.
We are on our way to French Polynesia, Fiji, vanuatu, Australia, Indonesia. There are so many places we would like to sail. We would have loved to see much more of South America.
Yachts in Mexico are selling right now! Are people looking to escape the craziness? Since January, the yacht market has been thriving, with consistent sales averaging one yacht per month. As we approach a peak of sales in May and June, demand is expected to rise even further, driven by North American buyers seeking escape to the sea as the weather improves and they are drawn to the sea. The Sea of Cortez, with its stunning landscapes and proximity to the U.S., remains a top choice for boaters looking for international cruising without straying too far from home. The Sea of Cortez, often called “The Aquarium of the World,” offers world-class fishing, diving, and cruising, making it a prime destination for cruisers both new and old.
Since January, the steady sales pace indicates healthy demand, especially from U.S. and Canadian buyers who see Mexico as an attractive alternative to domestic boating destinations. While the market is strong now, sales typically slow as summer progresses. By July and August, the extreme heat in Mexico discourages buyers, who often prefer to wait until the end of hurricane season (November) before making a purchase, putting the cost of boat storage and hurricane damage risks on the seller. It can be tough finding a local surveyor by late summer, August and September, when the heat and humidity are the worst.
The high cost of marinas in Mexico has been a detriment to the local market. Older boats are hit the hardest, people who can afford the boat, canโt afford the marina. People who can afford the marina, want a newer, more luxurious yacht.
Tips for Sellers in the Market
List Early Capitalize on the peak season by listing before May to take advantage of the beginning of summer buying peak.
Highlight the Sea of Cortez Appeal Emphasize the regionโs natural beauty, marine life, and accessibility to U.S. boaters.
Flexible Pricing for Summer Slowdown Getting your boat sold before the summer slow down will save you money, pass that savings on to any potential buyer who is interested in your boat. Win-wins are the best deals!
The international market has picked up in 2025, with steady sales and rising interest as we enter peak season. Sellers should act quickly to avoid the late-summer slowdown, when demand drops and ownership costs rise. For now, the conditions are favorable, but as the heat rises, so do the challenges.
Selling before mid-summer remains the best strategy for a hassle-free deal.

In terms of the 2025 Pacific hurricane season, forecasts suggest an active period. The Mexican government’s meteorological agency predicts 18 named storms in the Eastern Pacific, with 10 expected to become hurricanes and 4 reaching major hurricane status (Category 3 or higher) . These projections are influenced by factors such as above-average sea surface temperatures and favorable atmospheric conditions.
As of May 2025, the Pacific Ocean is experiencing ENSO-neutral conditions, meaning neither El Niรฑo nor La Niรฑa is currently present. This neutral phase is expected to persist through the Northern Hemisphere summer, with a 74% chance of continuing through August and over a 50% chance through October
WHERE TO YOU KEEP YOUR VESSEL ?
More and more discussions about Hurricane strategies where they want their vessel and crew to be come hurricane season. Some vessels are heading up the coast from Panama and parts in between towards Mexico. Others are heading south along the coast to Pacific Costa Rica and Panama. While others still are on the Caribbean side of the route making their way to their โspotโ in Colombia โ north to Rio Dulce and further north โ or sail to Grenada / ABCโs.
We are going to go over the NE Pacific options in this segment.
Please take all of this with a grain of salt.
Pacific Hurricane Strategies run the gamut with some general markers for you to ponder.
On the Pacific Coast of the Panama Posse Route there are many options for Hurricane season. Each with different pros and cons to consider. In general, between June and November, the further south or north you go there is less to no change of a hurricane. However, lightening becomes more of a real risk the further south you go.

It can be purchased at local markets in Fiji but Kava is also consumed in various ways throughout the Pacific Ocean cultures of Polynesia, Vanuatu, Melanesia and some parts of Micronesia and Australia.

It is tradition to present the leader or village chief with a Kava root, which you can find at any Fijian market. This will show your true understanding of the Fijian culture and the significance of the kava ceremony.
The kava ceremony focuses around the communal Kava tanoa (bowl). Guests sit in a circle around the bowl which is placed in front of the leader . The ceremony commences with the actual production of the Kava. The plant is pounded and the pulp placed into a cloth sack and mixed with water. The end result is a brownish colored liquid โ the Kava gold. It is then strained and ready for drinking and consumed by the visitors and the village chief and his entourage.
Kava aka yaqona, aka grog, is the traditional drink in Fiji. It is a mildly narcotic and sedative drink made from the crushed root of the yaqona (pronounced yang-GO-na) strained with water. It is served in a large communal bowl as part of the traditional kava ceremony. When you drink it it morphs into a pleasant, numb feeling around the mouth, lips and tongue, as well as a sense of calm and relaxation. You can ask for a full or half coconut shell Despite the naturally calming effects of the drink, the true experience lies in partaking in the ceremony. Kava is traditionally served as part of a ceremonial atmosphere, most commonly in welcoming guests into a village or on important occasions.
