Celebrations with Flor de Caรฑa Rum upon crossing the equator
Days 11-16 found Downshifting almost continuously in beam seas and winds on the port bow and working their way to the port stern. After multiple days of very slow speeds and adverse currents as we headed mostly south, we got into a very favorable current as we exited the ITCZ. (Inter Tropical Convergence Zone) We are now moving along well at 7+ knots and heading SW towards our destination.
We celebrated reaching halfway and getting into single digit latitudes with a shot of rum. It was a nice treat because it has been pretty much a dry trip, a detox that Carine for one needed.
On board, we have continued to eat well, despite the rolly seas. Dinner prep is quite an adventure. We have enjoyed hot dogs and baked beans, BLTโs and Ramen, rissoto with hot dogs, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, baked ham sandwiches, quinoa salad, made to order pizza and ravioli with bolognese sauce and probably some other good stuff I have forgotten.
We have done dozens of engine room checks and added oil to the stabilizer tank. We have ran the generator for water making and laundry 3 or 4 times. We have vacuumed dog hair daily. Today we scooped up ocean water to clean the stinky dog grass. All while reading multiple books, listening to music and LOTS of sleeping.
The only boat casualty since the port stab has been our refrigerator door. In the rough seas it flew open rapidly while trying to put food away and broke the upper hinge. Since it takes a dance of all four of us to open and close it safely now, we have emptied much of our food into our RTIC cooler for daily use. That adds the additional task of freezing bottles etc daily to keep it cold.
This brings us to the activities early this morning. We crossed the equator at 0445 and all attained the status of Shellbacks. Everyone was up for the occasion and we drank a toast of rum to Neptune and provided him his own drink into the sea. We also read some appropriate prose that Joseph provided for the occasion. Then, we all went back to bed except those of us on shift. Very memorableโฆโฆ.
We are excited to have less than 800 nm to go and expect to arrive on Nuku Hiva on Saturday or Sunday.

11) HURACรN
MEET a key figure in Mayan mythology, particularly in the creation story from the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the K’iche’ Maya. Huracรกn represents the power of wind, storm, and fire, and his name is the root of the word “hurricane.”
Creation Role:Huracรกn was instrumental in shaping the Earth and humanity. He is described as working alongside other deities during the creation of the world, particularly in attempts to create humans.
Wind and Storms: As the god of storms, Huracรกn could summon destructive winds and rain, symbolizing both chaos and renewal.
Appearance: He is often depicted as a one-legged god, reflecting his whirlwind-like nature. Artistic representations sometimes include serpent or jaguar motifs, emphasizing his connection to primal forces of nature.
Symbolism:Huracรกn embodies the unpredictable and transformative aspects of nature, playing a dual role as both a destructive force and a bringer of life-sustaining rain.
In modern contexts, Huracรกn‘s legacy endure in the word HURRICANE

Chilaquiles are a quintessential Mexican dish celebrated for their comforting flavors, cultural roots, and adaptability. Combining simple ingredients like tortilla chips, salsa, and toppings, chilaquiles bridge the gap between a hearty breakfast and a satisfying lunch. They are a dish steeped in tradition, creativity, and practicality, making them a favorite across Mexican households and high-end restaurants alike. This essay delves into the history, preparation, regional variations, cultural significance, and modern interpretations of chilaquiles.
Origins and Historical Significance The word “chilaquiles” comes from the Nahuatl language, spoken by the Aztecs, and roughly translates to โchilis and greens.โ This hints at the dishโs ancient roots in pre-Hispanic Mexican cuisine. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the Aztecs already utilized maize as a staple ingredient, preparing tortillas, tamales, and other dishes that still form the foundation of Mexican gastronomy.
Basic Chilaquiles Structure @ its core
Tortilla Chips: Corn tortillas are cut into wedges, lightly fried or baked, and used as the base. Their crispy texture provides a satisfying contrast to the soft, saucy elements.
Salsa: A choice of red (rojo) or green (verde) salsa defines the flavor profile of the dish. The salsa is often made with tomatoes, tomatillos, chiles, onions, garlic, and spices.
Toppings: Common toppings include crema (Mexican sour cream), queso fresco, avocado, cilantro, onions, and sometimes fried or scrambled eggs. Proteins such as shredded chicken or beef are also popular additions.
Regional Variations of Chilaquiles
Mexico City Style chilaquiles are typically prepared with a robust red salsa made from dried chiles like guajillo or ancho. The dish is often served with refried beans on the side and topped with cotija cheese and a fried egg.
Oaxaca known as the “Land of the Seven Moles,” often incorporates mole sauces into its chilaquiles. The smoky, complex flavors of mole negro or mole rojo provide a unique twist, making these chilaquiles rich and deeply flavorful.
Veracruz seafood is a central part of the cuisine, and chilaquiles might be garnished with shrimp or crab. The salsa is typically tangy and vibrant, featuring tomatillos and a touch of citrus.
Northern Mexico wheat flour tortillas are more common, chilaquiles may occasionally be prepared with flour tortilla chips. Additionally, the use of beef as a topping reflects the regionโs ranching traditions.
Yucatรกn with its Mayan culinary influences, features chilaquiles made with achiote-seasoned chicken and habanero salsa, giving the dish a fiery kick.
14) HISTORIC FACTS ABOUT THE PANAMA CANAL
A significant historical fact about the Panama Canal in 1945 is its critical role during and immediately after World War II. The canal was a vital strategic asset for the United States and its allies, as it allowed for the rapid movement of naval and merchant vessels between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
In 1945, as World War II ended, the canal experienced a peak in military traffic, with ships returning home or repositioning for post-war operations. Additionally:
The canal was heavily fortified throughout the war, and in 1945, these defenses began to be scaled down as the global conflict concluded.
This year also marked the beginning of post-war transitions for the canal, setting the stage for the modernization and administrative changes that would occur in the following decades.
USS Missouri (BB-63): Iowa-class battleship 887′ long, renowned for hosting the Japanese surrender ceremony on September 2, 1945, navigated through the canal on October 13, 1945.

DINGY THEFTS IN THE LA CRUZ ๐ฒ๐ฝ MX ANCHORAGE
From the sea of Cortez cruisers group on Facebook:
Secure Your Dinghy and Outboard:
As reported Irma Deacon, their Outboard Motor was stolen off their dinghy transom on Sunday Night (8th December) while at anchor in La Cruz. The dinghy was raised up on their Davits.
While crimes against Cruisers are rare in Mexico, Dinghy and Outboard motor theft is probably the No 1 Issue to be aware of and guard against. It’s not a La Cruz thing, it’s really a “anywhere thing”, we had our Dinghy stolen in Port San Luis, CA on our way South to Mexico in 2008. One season in the Barra de Navidad lagoon, 9 outboard motors were stolen over the course of 3 months. La Paz has theft that comes in waves and then vanishes, we were anchored in the Mazatlan Old Harbor when an entire Dinghy was cut off the davits and towed away at 3AM by a swift moving Panga, and I had an outboard motor disappear from my stern rail mount one night in the San Blas Estuary. Having been in Mexico since the 2008 Baja Ha-Ha, I have seen Dinghies and Outboard motors get stolen every season.
So how do you protect such an important and expensive piece of cruising gear?
First never leave your dinghy in the water at night, it makes it far too easy prey for a quick painter cut and tow away, but as Irma reported, their dinghy was raised up on the davits and the outboard was still stolen! So always have a Lock on your outboard motor to keep it from being silently unscrewed and removed from the transom. We installed a cable lock to through our dinghy and motor to the davits as well, for a bit of extra “go find one easier to steal” security.
Be safe out there folks and stay vigilant in protecting your Dinghy and Outboard motor.

“Lots of pondering going on these past couple of weeks.
I have the cast iron frying pan that my mom and dad cooked in (mom the first 54 years). It was always on the stove top, or in the oven if we had guests coming over. That frying pan served more breakfasts than a number can truly state. Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Ham, and other items Chicken Beef, Pork Chops, Burgers, Gravy, Potatoes etcโฆ Became breakfast lunch or dinner almost on a daily basis.
Such a simple reminder of the daily provisions of a parent. It was a sign of daily love and care. We were fortunate as a family, we never struggled with lack of food, never had to have assistance. Dad was always able to work, and mom made sure everything else was carried for. We never knew if we were rich or poor, because you did not talk about those things.
There was always enough, probably in the early days just enough, but always enough.
I am reminded almost daily of that love from my parents. Often, I use that same frying pan. Sometimes it is breakfast, occasionally dinner, but it is used multiple times each week.
It still is a sign of provision for us. It is a reminder that the cupboards have never been completely bare, sometimes a little thin in the early days but always enough. It a reminder that for over 60 years God had provided for me, His provision.
He has never left me nor forsaken a need.
Much like my earthly parents, He has always provided and loved in ways that were seen and unseen. No matter where I have been I will simply say THERE IS ENOUGH “

18) PORT OF LATAKIA ๐ธ๐พ
2024-12-10
Key Developments Related to the Ports of Latakia and beyond
Strikes on Syrian Naval Installations:
๐ฎ๐ฑ’s airstrikes reportedly targeted naval infrastructure along Syria’s coastline, specifically focusing on missile stockpiles, radar systems, and other assets essential to the Syrian Navy’s operational capabilities.
Some reports indicate the destruction of naval weaponry stored at key facilities, potentially crippling Syriaโs ability to project power in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Port of Latakia:
The Port of Latakia, Syria’s largest commercial and military port, was a significant focus of Israeli operations. This port is a known entry point for ๐ฎ๐ท’s arms shipments to Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Strikes in this area aimed to disrupt the supply chain of weapons and logistics for Syria’s armed forces and allied militias, including precision missile components reportedly supplied by ๐ฎ๐ท.
The port is also a hub for Russian naval activity, though military actions carefully avoided targeting Russian assets to prevent escalation.
Port of Tartus ( 40 nm south of Latakia and closer to Israel ) :
The Tartus naval base, operated jointly by Syria and Russia, was not directly targeted, but its vicinity saw increased surveillance and activity. The base is strategically critical for Russian naval operations in the Mediterranean and is often used to provide logistical support to Syrian forces.
Impact on Syrian Naval Capabilities:
These strikes are believed to have severely weakened the Syrian Navy, which already had limited capabilities due to years of conflict and sanctions.
The loss of missile systems, naval radars, and other critical assets reduces Syriaโs ability to defend its maritime borders or project power along its coastline.
Strategic Goals:
These actions aim to establish maritime dominance in the region, prevent the establishment of ๐ฎ๐ท’s-backed naval footholds, and disrupt supply chains supporting Syrian and extremists forces.
The strikes also send a message to ๐ฎ๐ท, signaling ๐ฎ๐ฑ’s willingness to take decisive action to counter perceived threats from the sea.
Broader Context
The ๐ฎ๐ฑ focus on ports and naval facilities reflects its broader strategy to neutralize ๐ฎ๐ท’ s influence in the region. By targeting these critical nodes, Israel aims to:
Prevent arms smuggling via the Mediterranean.
Reduce the operational capabilities of Syrian forces allied with ๐ฎ๐ท.
Undermine extremists group’s ability to receive advanced weaponry.
20) HISTORIC DEFORESTATION OF SPAIN ๐ช๐ธ FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SPANISH ARMADA
The deforestation of Spain for the construction of the Spanish fleet is a significant historical example of the environmental consequences of large-scale maritime and military enterprises. During the height of the Spanish Empire, particularly from the late 15th to the 18th century, Spainโs naval dominance required vast amounts of timber for shipbuilding, contributing to the depletion of its forests.
Historical Context
Golden Age of Spanish Naval Power: Between the late 15th and early 17th centuries, Spain was a leading maritime power. The Spanish fleet, including the famed Armada, required an extensive supply of high-quality timber to construct warships, galleons, and trading vessels. These ships were essential for protecting trade routes, expanding the empire, and engaging in military campaigns.
Geographical Focus: The primary regions impacted by deforestation included northern Spain, particularly Cantabria, Galicia, and the Basque Country, where shipbuilding industries were concentrated. Forests in Andalusia, Castile, and the Mediterranean regions were also exploited to meet the demand for wood.
Timber Requirements
Ship Design: The construction of a single galleon required hundreds of mature oak trees, which were prized for their strength and durability. Other types of wood, such as pine and cedar, were used for masts, planking, and other components.
Scale of Demand:
The Spanish fleet needed constant replenishment due to the wear and tear from naval battles, long voyages, and natural decay.
The construction of the Spanish Armada in 1588 alone consumed vast quantities of timber, exacerbating deforestation across the country.
Firewood and Tar Production: In addition to shipbuilding, the production of pitch, tar, and charcoal for maintaining ships further contributed to the depletion of forest resources.
Environmental Impact
Deforestation:
Vast tracts of oak, pine, and other forests were clear-cut, leading to widespread deforestation in key regions.
By the 16th century, some areas, such as the Cantabrian coast, faced severe depletion, forcing shipbuilders to source timber from more distant locations.
Soil Degradation and Erosion:
The loss of forests led to soil erosion, particularly in hilly and mountainous areas. Without tree cover, rainfall washed away fertile soil, reducing agricultural productivity.
Rivers silted up, further complicating the transportation of timber and affecting local ecosystems.
Biodiversity Loss:
The destruction of forests disrupted habitats for numerous plant and animal species, leading to declines in biodiversity.
Climate Effects:
Regional climates may have been affected by the reduction of forest cover, contributing to changes in water cycles and local weather patterns.
Economic and Social Consequences
Resource Scarcity:
By the 17th century, the depletion of nearby forests increased the cost and difficulty of obtaining timber. This, in turn, raised the expense of shipbuilding and maintenance, straining Spain’s economy.
Shipbuilders were forced to import timber from other regions, including France and Scandinavia, as domestic supplies dwindled.
Impact on Local Communities:
Rural communities that depended on forests for firewood, construction materials, and grazing lands faced hardships as resources became scarce.
Conflict over land use between shipbuilding industries and local agricultural needs intensified.
Decline of Naval Power:
The environmental and economic consequences of deforestation contributed indirectly to the decline of Spainโs naval dominance. By the 18th century, Spain could no longer sustain the large fleets necessary to maintain its empire.
Efforts to Mitigate Deforestation
Recognizing the strategic importance of forests for its navy, the Spanish Crown implemented measures to protect and manage forest resources:
Royal Decrees:
Starting in the 16th century, the Crown issued decrees to regulate timber harvesting, reserving certain forests for naval purposes.
Penalties were imposed for unauthorized cutting, and efforts were made to promote reforestation.
Sustainable Forest Management:
In regions like the Basque Country, shipbuilders practiced selective logging and other sustainable practices to extend the availability of timber.
The establishment of state-owned “royal forests” ensured a controlled supply of timber for the fleet.
Reforestation Projects:
By the 18th century, reforestation initiatives were undertaken, though they were often insufficient to restore the vast forests lost during earlier centuries.
Legacy
The deforestation of Spain for the Spanish fleet is an early example of the environmental costs of industrial and imperial expansion. While it contributed to Spainโs maritime dominance and the expansion of its empire, the over-exploitation of natural resources had long-term consequences for the environment, economy, and society.

One Hundred Years of Solitude a masterpiece by Nobel Prize winning author Gabriel Garcรญa Mรกrquez
Gabriel Garcรญa Mรกrquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude is a sweeping multi-generational tale of the Buendรญa family, set in the fictional Colombian town of Macondo. Blending magical realism with historical and cultural allegory, the novel chronicles the rise and fall of the Buendรญa family over seven generations, exploring themes of solitude, love, power, and human folly.
The story begins with Josรฉ Arcadio Buendรญa, the patriarch, who founds Macondo in the midst of a jungle with his wife, รrsula. Through their descendants, the novel traces the familyโs experiences with war, love, betrayal, and obsession, revealing a cyclical pattern of repetition, where names and traits reoccur, and history seems destined to repeat itself.
The novel weaves fantastical elements into the fabric of everyday life, with magical events such as a levitating priest, a child born with a pig’s tail, and a plague of insomnia that spreads through the town. These events, juxtaposed with political turmoil, modernization, and exploitation by outsiders, highlight the fragility of memory and the inevitable decline of human endeavors.
As Macondo falls into decay, so does the Buendรญa family, undone by its own excesses and insularity. The novel concludes with the last of the Buendรญas discovering the family’s prophecy in a set of ancient texts, realizing their fate was sealed from the start.
A landmark in world literature, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a profound meditation on Latin American identity, history, and the human condition, celebrated for its vivid prose and timeless resonance.
