IMPORTANT CAUTION
 IF CRUISING THE SOUTHERN COAST OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Soulmate is a 63’ motor yacht and we are OK.

Soulmate was having a bumpy, but good cruise from Port Antonio, Jamaica bound for Boca Chica DR. Just after we rounded Cabo Beata and turned north Sunday afternoon, both propellers became fouled in a massive bunch of fishing lines and we were dead in the water with 6-8’ waves at 4-5 seconds. 

We issued a MAYDAY call and thankfully a 350’ container ship responded and turned around from about 10 miles out and came to our rescue. 

Even in daylight the rescue was tricky and dangerous in the conditions. They managed to get a line to us, but we collided during rescue and Soulmate suffered some cosmetic damage along her starboard side. 

They towed us through the night in rough seas to the port of Rio Haina. Once there, a pilot boat towed us to a commercial mooring and quickly returned with a scuba diver. He removed a trash bag full of ropes and lines from the props and we got underway to Boca Chica. 

If you are rounding Cabo Beata stay in deep water, which will put you off shore at least two+ miles to avoid fishing lines. We had dodged several and we’re headed to deeper water when we got entangled about 1.5 miles SE of the cape. 

We have incredible appreciation for the captain and crew of the Polynesia and will be forever grateful. The Port Authority at Rio Haina offered to bring us food and water if needed and were extremely kind and helpful as well .

• Daylight hours include civil twilight (about 40 minutes before sunrise or 40 minutes after sunset). 
• Morning tides are always better due to the absence of wind waves.

are nearing the end of a spring tide phase.  Tides for the week
are early to mid-morning. Any day during the forecast period is good for
arrival or departure. Swell forecast shows the bar almost flat.

About the Bar

The entrance into Bahia del Sol can be intimidating but most
bars can be crossed safely with experience or proper guidance. November
through February the entrance is fairly tame, even flat but some days
can be quite exciting. During the summer months the condition of the bar
varies due to swells originating the the southern ocean.

PALENQUE  🇲🇽 CHIAPAS MEXICO 

Palenque
also anciently known as Lakamha “Big Water” , was a Maya city
state in southern Mexico that flourished in the 7th century. The
Palenque ruins date from ca. 226 BC to ca. 799 AD.  After its
decline, it was overgrown by the jungle of cedar, mahogany, and
sapodilla trees, but has since been excavated and restored with an
onsite museum. It is located near the Usumacinta River in the Mexican
state of Chiapas resides at 150 meters (490 ft) above sea level.

Palenque
is a medium-sized site, smaller than Tikal  but it contains some
of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and  relief
carvings that the Mayas produced. Much of the history of Palenque has
been reconstructed from reading the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the
many monuments; historians now have a long sequence of the ruling
dynasty of Palenque in the 5th century and extensive knowledge of the
city-state’s rivalry with other states such as Calakmul and Toniná.

The
rulers of Palenque were called the “Holy Lord of Toktahn” or “Holy Lord
of Baakal”, and among the king list are several legendary leaders,
including Snake Spine and Ch’a Ruler I.   The very first named
ruler of Palenque is GI, the First Father, said to have been born 3122
BCE, and the Ancestral Goddess said to have been born 3121 BCE.

Scientific
debt is owned to the famed Mexican archaeologist Alberto
Lhuillier, who in 1952 removed a stone inside the Temple of
Inscriptions and found the burial tomb of Pakal the Great. This has
since become one of the most extensively studied archaeological sites in
the Americas.
