โ€œPan Pan Pan Pan, my friends on SV Supernova were boarded and attacked by pirates near Islas Los Frailes 11ยฐ27.976โ€ฒ N 063ยฐ23.585โ€ฒ W ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ช Venezuela yesterday morning 2024-12-07 around 0600 AM local time .
( SUPERNOVA IS AN OCEAN P-OSSE VESSEL # 004 a Canadian Flagged Prout 46โ€ฒ ) Cat My friend called me on -WhatsApp in a panic and said he fought with boarders and threw them overboard and didnโ€™t know what to do. Other men in a panga appeared to have guns. He and his girlfriend sustained minor injuries in the fight. I told them to get moving and they were able get their catamaran moving north at over 9kts in heavy seas and the pirates did not continue to pursue. Supernova had departed Grand Roque Venezuela after spending 12 days touring the Los Roques Islands in Venezuela, documenting their experiences for their YouTube channel. Using an agent they legally entered, checked in and had visas and permits to be in Venezuela. Supernova was approx. 200nm east of Grand Roque when the attack took place. After I received the call, I issued a Pan Pan on ch 16 from my vessel anchored in Prickly Bay Grenada. A charter vessel in St Georgeโ€™s responded as did the airport tower. The airport tower notified the Grenada Coast Guard who in turn also contacted the Trinidad Coast Guard. I provided the Supernova crew with the phone number to call the Grenada Coast Guard who received a report of the incident. The GCG advised them to set course for Prickly Bay and maintain contact with GCG. This was a very close call for my friends on Supernova. As of 1400 local time in Grenada, they are still around 80nm SW of Grenada and should arrive in Prickly Bay Sunday morning. I cannot imagine the terror they must have felt and the PTSD from which they may need to recover. They will prepare a report for CSSN as soon as they can. For Godโ€™s sake stay well clear of Venezuelan Islands.โ€

PATHFINDER

On Sunday, May 19, 2025, at 10:40 AM, the French Polynesia Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC Tahiti) received a distress alert from a satellite PLB beacon associated with the pleasure craft โ€œPathfinder,โ€ registered under the U.S. flag, with four people potentially on board, located south-southwest of the island of Tahuata.
While deploying maritime resources, the JRCC also utilized a privately available aircraft, a Cessna, which located the capsized vessel at 1:44 PM but did not observe any survivors nearby.Fishing vessels โ€œMoite,โ€ โ€œPoeani,โ€ and โ€œNelckaelโ€ were dispatched to the area. The โ€œMoiteโ€ found the wreckage and various floating debris but did not locate the castaways.Subsequent signals from the distress beacon indicated movement inconsistent with drifting, suggesting a trajectory toward Tahuata Island. Around the same time, the โ€œPoeaniโ€ reported rescuing the four castaways, who were struggling to reach land using stand-up paddleboards.

The survivors were brought ashore at Hiva Oa and attended to by firefighters.

The swift identification of the distressed vessel was facilitated by the ownerโ€™s registration of the beacon in the appropriate databases, allowing JRCC Tahiti to quickly correlate the information and coordinate the rescue efforts.

Responded to PAN PAN from sailing boat TEMBO

Fri Apr 04 2025 06:27:00 GMT-0500 (GMT-05:00)

โ€œLast night we were contacted by Tahiti JRCC letting us know that a vessel near us had issued a PAN PAN. The boat name is TEMBO and they are participating in the World ARC โ€“ they are way behind the fleet.

We contacted them by VHF and turned around and motored towards them because it was getting dark. They had no functioning main engine and they had no gasoline left for their emergency generator. The batteries were almost dead and they were going dark.

We provided them with 20 litres of gas and they said they were OK. Two older people on board โ€“ not very mobile. They dropped the transfer line twice so we dropped our dinghy to bring the fuel to them.

We are currently at 10.29 south 125.30 west. We left them about 12 hours ago and they were sailing at about 5 knots. Unfortunately I made a mistake writing down their contact info so I was wondering if you thought it may be useful for following boats that see them to check with them if they are in VHF range.

We will probably meet them in Hiva Oa to retell the story from each side.โ€

We were heading back to Shelter Bay Marina for the upcoming Ocean Posse rendezvous when we heard a distress call come across VHF channel 16. A boat was sinking and needed immediate assistance. My chart plotter was littered with targets of other boats yet no one responded. Marla and I answered the call. The boat was a 1984 Tanaya 37 with water egressing rapidly. The owner was standing in ankle deep water on his cabin sole as he gave me his position. We immediately doused the sails and turned back. I motored as fast as I could pushing Long Windid thru steep waves towards the distressed boat.
We were approximately 8 miles away and were in constant contact with the distressed boat. Eric, on Cruzon was now involved yet could not contact the vessel directly due to his distance, so I was the relay. The owner was tired, panicked and frustrated. He was emotionally ready to abandon ship and let the boat sink. Eric suggested to run it on to the sandy beach. Finally, as I got closer, he was able to slow the water by stopping his motor. He later told me the bellows on his dripless gland failed and by stopping the rotation of the shaft it slowed the water flow. Fortunately, by the time we had arrived, the Tanaya had her head sail up and was limping towards Turtle Cay Marina. We stayed around to shepherd the boat thru the narrow cut at the entrance of the marina. There we met up with Curzon who was waiting at the entrance. That evening the owner and his wife came over to our boat and expressed their extreme gratefulness for both Eric and our assistance. He noticed the Ocean Posse flag flying. He said he has been with buddy boats in the past that would not have turned around. It did not surprise him that the two boats that came to his assistance were Ocean Posse boats. His interaction with other Posse boats has always been positive.

โ€œ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธโš“๏ธ How it Started- the Plan ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒŠOur 1,259 nautical mile offshore journey from ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฆPanama to ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธFlorida โ€“ non-stop 8 days, 24/7.

๐ŸŒŠ Paul & Heatherโ€™s Adventure: Day #1793: The Wildest Yet! ๐Ÿšค

After mapping the perfect weather window, confirmed by top meteorologists, we left Colรณn, Panama, at sunset on Thursday, Jan 23. Destination: Florida. 1,260 nautical miles. ๐ŸŒŽ

But the ocean had other plansโ€ฆ Relentless 25 knot winds, 10 foot waves every 9 seconds meant as soon as we thrashed up one wave, it would crash over our boat and right when we were almost through it, another one would immediately come again. Nordhavn boats are meant to plow through anything safely, but it was rough!โ€

โ€œ๐Ÿ๏ธLifesavers in San Andrรฉs, Colombia๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ด:

Just before losing Starlink, Heather activated her Colombian and world network of legends texting 3 key people, quickly explaining the situation and that we might need help getting into and settled in Colombia. She also spoke via VHF in all the chaos at the helm to a local cargo ship captain who was returning to San Andres (thank goodness she is fluent in Spanish!) This angel followed us for 15 hours to make sure we got safely to shore โ€“ especially critical as we did not have electricity at this point. The result of her amazing #dialafriend efforts resulted in the Coast Guard, marina owner, and port officials all prepped and waiting for us, while we were escorted into port, secured dock space (the ONLY space available), and cleared customs like VIPs.

Blessed to all who helped us. (Especially Miguel, Ann, Fer, Nana, Catalina, Nene) Exhausted but so grateful.

PS. For anyone that knows Heather โ€“ she LOVES Colombia and has a strong network of dear friends, some of course even on this small island 80 miles off the coast of Nicaragua in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. We are safe. #gratitude โ€œ
