05:58 WildhoodDirk Yes, very true. I went to the airport very early to beat the rush when the flights start arriving….I did inquire about a bus for the way back but was told I’d have to take a bus to Liberia first, then another bus to Coco….if you’ve got the time definitely the cheapest way though.

07:12 Midnight B Richard Another vote for Isaac and his team who worked until late yesterday in marina Chiapas repairing our fridge for a very reasonable price. Despite it being a difficult fault to trace, they worked until the job was finished.
07:57 SV Blessed Life Yea! Finally cut the dock lines from shelter bay. Heading north. We will see where we get blown…
08:38 Rob Murray ‘Yay!
08:42 SAN You just have to walk back to the main road. There are bus stops for both directions. Probably the smaller busses from the airport go only to Liberia.

09:39 SV Chimera On the way to Perlas. Sierra and….. Anyone know what the other is?
09:49 AEOLIAN – Jared QQ: Just recently got to Puerto Angel Mexico and considering moving on south to the anchorages Bahias de Huatulco. Curious if anyone has experience in these bays and enjoyed good holding for overnights in mild – medium weather? I saw many are suggested as day use only and would like to be able to rest up in one for 3-5 days.

10:03 Midnight B Caroline Here’s the outcome of our night-time encounter with an unlit floating fishing net off the entrance to Puerto Madero, Chiapas. To recap, the incident happened at about 05.00 last Saturday, at N14°38.01′ W092°25.72′, about 3.5nm off the coast.
Memo has been great throughout, liaising with the port captain and making sure we were fairly treated. We stated to the Port Captain that we were totally willing to make a good will contribution to repairing the net even though it wasn’t our fault. The port captain however “ruled” that we should make no such payment and that if the net owner wanted to claim from us, then we would be entitled to claim for any damage to our boat, which would easily exceed the cost of repairs to the net. (We will need to touch up the hull/keel joint where we snagged the net.)
The fishermen’s ‘Patron” got greedy and when the incident happened was trying to intimidate us somewhat into paying an excessive amount, which is why we told them we would resolve it in Port and they have now ended up with nothing. They will hopefully not now take the same approach with any other unfortunate yachts they ‘catch’.
The incident was not pleasant but we did not feel in real danger and would certainly not want this to put off anyone coming into Chiapas.
11:04 Captain Dietmar thank you very much
do you have the name of the fishing vessel or patron by any chance ?
12:29 Midnight B Richard Anyone have experience of flying in to Mexico city with a bag full of boat parts? My understanding is that there is no import duty for items totalling up to $500 US per person, but duty is payable over that amount. Does that fit with your experience?
12:30 Midnight B Richard Nearly all the items we intend to bring will be replacement parts if that makes any difference
12:41 Rob Murray We have said it’s ‘camping equipment’ and dodged duty. To use your tip to get duty free import you have to export and document the parts you’re replacing, rarely worth the effort.
12:43 Coddiwomple – Bram We did just that, flying into Loreto with 3 very large suite cases full of parts after Xmas. Not surprisingly we were pulled aside and everything went though x-ray. They pulled out alternator and filters and asked for receipts. We ended up paying 6 (?) or so % on those items which totaled up to only $35 or so. They explained they were looking for car parts and our attempt to explain it was for our own use and for a sailboat were unsuccessful. Given how many things we brought in (macerator pump, many electronic items etc) we just paid and were happy to leave after long flights. YMMV.

13:25 Midnight B Richard Might not get away with using an AIS transceiver for camping…
13:29 Rob Murray Most Mexican customs agents are not sophisticated campers. 🙂
13:34 Midnight B Richard … and it’s always good to know the CPA of the nearest tent ⛺
13:45 Midnight B Caroline The small panga with the two fishermen that arrived a while after we got caught up just had a number. Their patron who arrived later was called Jomo, also on a panga with just a number.
13:59 Last Arrow Vincent Re Costa Rica customs. We flew in to Liberia with parts for Watermaker, bags got inspected and all parts were taken by customs. We asked to pay any duty or fees then and there but they said we needed to hire a customs agent ($450.00) to file the correct paper work in order to get parts released from the private bonded warehouse ($150.00). As this all happened on a Friday we were unable to finally get the parts until late Monday., ($80.00 to deliver to the marina)
We had invoices plus they checked out the prices on line, duty and taxes was 35% plus broker fees. $2700.00 USD later we had our parts and Watermaker is back on line.
14:04 Last Arrow Vincent Re Costa Rica customs. I now have a part being shipped by UPS, this time direct to customs agent who will clear the part for me and take care of the duties etc. I’ll let you know how much it cost for a part that cost about $100.00
14:55 SAN That fits with my experience. They pull out everyone who has more than one bag. The officer was very fair, but will look up prices on the internet, if you do not have an invoice. So, if you got some parts for a better price, carry the invoice.
14:58 SAN I just finished my video about our visit to the Grey Whales in San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California. The whales can actually be touched there. Here is the link:
15:56 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce I started using Aeropost.com to deliver packages to their location in Quepos. I had 4 packages waiting for me when I got here. Total fees including shipping from Miami was about $150 for about $600 worth of goods.
16:00 Pilialoha Hi, does anyone know of a transmission mechanic in the Marina Chahue area? Our kanzaki transmission is making an unusual, clattering sound in forward, not reverse. Any reference will be welcome. Thank you, Rick and María Lucía on Pilialoha
18:01 🦜🍹Kyrie They are really simple machines, so any mechanic with experience with manual car transmissions can easily work on them. If it’s bad though, the pricing on parts for these units makes it quickly worth just buying a brand new one. You could order one, fly to the states and bring it back in your luggage.
18:51 🥥🦜PathfinderJPNicole We shared this info after a wonderful week in the bays of Huatulco… if you want more details please message me!
Back online for a moment after a week in the Bahías de Huatulco. Good Nautical provided us great, protected anchorages even with the Tehuantepec blowing strong. Dietmar was absolutely right about La India and Isla Cacaluta, why we missed the Line call yesterday, huge white sand beaches and great snorkeling and all alone at night. Our first stop at dawn from Acapulco was Playa Riscalillio/Jicaral perfect to rest after 48 hours sailing. Clear water, star filled nights, no cell service, water and weather perfect temperature at all the stops. Now at Playa Maguey for internet to check weather and eat out. Not in a rush to cross to Chiapas, enjoying everything too much!
19:05 AZIMUTH – Ash There is a mechanic who lives on a boat in the marina. Not sure about transmissions, but he helped us with an injector issue. Spanish only, but Jose the security guard can help point you in the right direction.

13:06 Randonnée Hello all! You may recall we were wondering about Zihuatenejo and Acapulco for checking in to Mexico. After more research and phone calls, we finally caved and are heading to Chiapas. Much easier it seems!! So maybe we’ll see some of you there! We just checked out of Panama. We went up the river to Pedregal, through the Boca Brava entrance. It was pretty fun; they were definitely not accustomed to seeing sailboats up here. (We have a lifting centerboard). I speak fluent Spanish so was able to get some of the low-down on checking in/out here. They require 48 hours notice. Carlos works directly with the Port Captain, Moises. (We did not use Carlos as we came all the way up here and were able to do it ourselves.) Puero Armuelles uses the same office. They did not recommend going there as that port is used more for the bigger container ships and you still end up in Pedregal. David has some big, good grocery stores. I’ll put more notes on GoodNautical but am posting the quick and dirty here as I’m not sure how much longer we’ll have service. Cheers!

11:08 SV Rhumbline (Terry) Has anyone handed in their TIP to Chiapas, checking out of MX. Not returning, and will need a Zarpe for Honduras(final destination). What is the process? Will Memo help with this? What do I need to know?
12:23 WildhoodDirk Hi all! Just doing some land travel from Chiapas. Does anyone have some recent experience travelling from San Cristobal up to Palenque via Hwy 199 (the direct route) versus going ALL the way around??
13:09 Captain Dietmar REMINDER WEEKLY PANAMA POSSE LINE CALL TOMORROW AT 15.30 UTC FOR THE CARIBBEAN AND ATLANTIC AND AT 16,:00 UTC for the Pacific
if there are time changes locally please adjust accordingly
13:40 CuranderaDarryn @SV Rhumbline (Terry) We checked out of Chiapas and Memo was great, made all arrangements for us. As for cancellation of TIP, we were told we actually had to drive 2 hours to the border with Guatemala to do so. Crazy! We didn’t obviously, but you can address that with the new owner if you sell your boat. There’s an authorization letter you can write. This is what I was told in Chiapas
13:46 🥥🦜PathfinderJPNicole We’re in San Cristobal right now and planning on driving directly to Palenque tomorrow. We rented a car and have been asking locals, taxi drivers and tour agencies about the road. Everyone says we must drive only during the daytime. We are going to stop and stay in Agua Azul to enjoy and break up the drive. We will share our experience tomorrow.
14:43 SV Rhumbline (Terry) @CuranderaDarryn ok that’s why I need a link to make sure. I’m not going to sell the boat and understand if I do, the new owners MAY want to sail back to MX and will need a Tip. My concern is correctly checking out so that I can get a Zarpe for Honduras. My boat will permanently reside in Roatan and I need to make sure everything is above board for the Honduran authorities. I live there and am just trying to bring my boat around. I would just leave MX without further thought but need to make sure I can get into HND correctly.

11:14 ☸️ Outventure Isla Taborcillo / John Wayne Island anchorage close to Punta Chame / Panama
Short follow up on the line call:
Isla Taborcillo is a great, calm anchorage with some island exploration to be done. There is an abandoned hotel & Western town theme park on the island which is worth a visit.
Also very good kitesurfing and wingsurfing with flat water, especially at (spring) low tides south-easterly of the island when the sandbars come out.
Approach from the south is safe at high tide, navionics charts are quite accurate.
Approach from north was also easy with coming tide.
Here is a track i saved coming and going from Punta Chame.
Supplies available in Punta Chame village, also some restaurants, recommendations are: a new cafe “Happy Corner” right on the beach by some German expats and the Beachclub SOLE at Panama Kite Center with great food and vibes. Happy Corner also organizes tours and hikes, for example to Cerro Chame, a 580 m high “mountain” with stunning views over the pacific coast.
You may also learn to kitesurf with Panama Kite Center or Panama Kitehouse.

15:14 DancingontheEdge Mel There is a new Facebook group about cruising in Jamaica. It is Jamaica One Love Cruisers. It may have information for anyone interested in cruising there.
15:28 Last Arrow Vincent I’m presently in Quepos and wanting to find an anchorage within the Gulf of Nicoya area with very easy beach access for a dinghy. I will have my 2 & 3 year old grandkids with me so access has to be easy. I promised them we would look for treasure so I have to take them out on the boat some where Any suggestions ? thanks.
15:38 DancingontheEdge Mel @Last Arrow Vincent Curu anchorage has a flat beach. Do you have wheels to pull your dinghy back out because the tide is large? There is also a private park with a few walks. A few monkeys to see. Did you ask in the Marina office about an Anchorage?
15:39 Last Arrow Vincent @DancingontheEdge Mel thanks yes I have dinghy wheels.
15:42 DancingontheEdge Mel There is another beach spot between the islands there. I don’t know about landing there. Pangas bring people over from the resorts.

11:36 🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt For Beneteau owners… I need to trouble shoot my regulator and the solenoid in my propane locker.
My solenoid is very hot when circuit is on. It makes a clicking sound, but I can’t tell if it is getting engaged.
Anyhow, my question is how is the regulator attached to the wall? Is it glued?
Has anyone removed it?
DM me if you could help. Thanks Walt
11:37 Rob Murray @🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt usually attached with pipe dope sealant on the threads.
11:40 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Easy way to check if it is working is to turn it off, light a stove burner, and see if it goes out after burning for a few minutes. Normally they click when turned on or off.
11:42 Captain Dietmar @🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt ours does get warm and clicks too and it works
our gas bottles valves open the other way though so I’ve looked at the arrows on them to ensure I open them
11:59 🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt Photos
12:04 🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt I know I have pressure because it showing on the gauge. But when the valve on the stove is open it should push air out until propane finally gets there. But there is no air flow at all but. So either the regulator stopping gas for solenoid is stopping the gas. I need to remove them to test them and possibly replace them. But I cannot see anything that is holding the regulator against the propane Locker law. I was going to cry oh, but if I’m wrong that would do more damage than I want to. So the question is do I just try it away from the wall, because that regulator needs to be remove before I can remove the solenoid
12:05 🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt Pry off not cry oh
12:06 Rob Murray Looks like it’s screwed to the bulkhead and has some ‘goop’ around the holes. You should reassemble with the yellow ptfe/Teflon tape, the white stuff isn’t propane/hydrocarbon rated. Most hardware stores have it.
12:06 🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt Pry not try
12:07 Rob Murray Photos
12:07 Rob Murray Look in that hole for a screw.
12:08 🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt I’ll try, couldn’t get my head down there and couldn’t get a good camera shot either. I’ll just try putting a screwdriver in that hole. But it’s a really small size screw I would say in number two if that is the case
12:09 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce @🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt That was my thought. Is there access behind the propane locker in that area? There might be screws back there

13:08 RED ROVER-Alison Hi! Sorry we were at Coiba without cell service. I don’t know how to access them, it was just noted to me by Carlos in Boca Chica. I hope you found access!
13:15 Pilialoha Hi, Rick here on Pilialoha, a Beneteau 393. I have done this several times. My regulator os screwed onto the compartment. The screws come onto the metal from the other side of the compartment. In my boat i go to the port cabin and remove a wooden cover on the ceiling. That allows me access to the screw heads. Then unscrew from that side. Regulator will come free. A bit of a chore but doable. Good Luck, Rick and María Lucía on Pilialoha at marina Chahue
13:17 RED ROVER-Alison Photos
13:17 RED ROVER-Alison Hola Posse! We just spent 5 nights at Coiba and another lovely night at Bahia Honda. Back in cell service and wanted to share the Coiba fee experience. We are 58 feet long and when we checked in with the ranger I said that we were. Mistake. Fees for boats 50 to 100 feet are $160 per night. After he told us our total for 4 nights would be $740 we said ah no, we thought it was $60/night. And then he provided us with the fee schedule. So we said we couldn’t do that, and he asked how much money we had. We were able to settle at $400 total with a fishing license for the park waters (usually $50) included. I should have gone much lower. We passed the lesson onto a sailboat that is over 50 feet and they were able to say they were 48.5 feet and negotiate below the $60/night rate. We were approached by a different ranger and his crew with machine guns in their panga twice while anchored. We gave them cokes, told them we paid and everything was fine. We were given a fishing license but nothing to note that we had paid. The money was put in a drawer and there were no records other than the fishing license. No boat or personal documents needed. It was absolutely beautiful at Coiba. Loved it. Just a funny start.

13:20 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Nice drone shot. Of course you have a drone. 😁
13:37 🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt @pilialoha and all others that have been so helpful. I unscrewed from the back of the regulator. Reached from aft lazarette. Blew air through regulator with success. Jumped solenoid and blow are through solenoid with success. Test power to solenoid (which was redundant because I always heard the click) with success. Temporarily hooked back up and I’m getting gas to the stove.
All I can think is goshiling the regulator must have done something.
Long story, but to make it short. Just hit it with a hammer.
Thanks again
13:38 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Haha. Glad it worked out!
14:00 AEOLIAN – Jared Hey guys – QQ on El Salvador. I am probably departing Mexico South in the next two weeks and some friends are working to convince me to stop in El Salvador en route to Costa Rica. I know May is not optimal for lightning strikes but curious if there is any advice from someone who has been there during this season based on their experiance?

15:32 RED ROVER Kevin Our process took 4 days. We planned our arrival for a Monday with the assumption that nothing would begin in a weekend. Also, we thought arriving late in the week could lengthen the process by 2 days, again assuming nothing would happen on the weekend. We combined a shopping/Tigo sim card trip in to David with the day our cruising permit was supposed to be ready so that we could pick it up. (Carlos’ brother was our driver). The local office was having difficulties with the Panama office on getting the details on the cruising permit correct. We stayed right up to closing time and they felt the pressure to complete… it worked and we left with permit in hand. With Ll that said, we’d recommend talwith Carlos several days ahead, even a week or two, to get him the paperwork. He needs to schedule 4 offices to drive an hour out to Boca Chica… kind of like wrangling cats. Buy a great place to hang for a few days as Rob said.

19:13 Aegis, Mary/Ian We had a great experience with a Guatemalan travel agency that I highly recommend whether you are flying into Guatemala or taking your boat into Puerto Quetzal.
Luis, a professional driver, on very short notice, drove from Antigua, GT to Puerto Quetzal to pick us up and drive us to our hotel in Antigua. Turns out he also owns a travel agency. The next day, Tuesday, we contacted him and asked if he could get us by air to Tikal, including a guide. After some amazing hustling on his part he had our flights booked, shuttles , and a guide in Tikal arranged…for Wednesday! He personally drove us to and from Guatemala City airport.
I had to say all this because I had been recommended a certified guide through the marina who was an absolute flop that after days of communication could not organize anything or give me a price. Luis was a fraction of the price that others had paid for similar service.

How much time does it take you to do a bottom clean? And how often do you do it?

15:48 WildhoodDirk Seeing mixed reviews in terms of what Marina Ixtapa is like these days….looking at maybe making it a stop heading north…Looking for recent experiences here in terms of general condition/safety for boat/potable water?/wifi or cell service. Thanks in advance!
16:23 Jungle-Jim Ellifritt Ixatapa marina is a great stop. We just left there after a 6 week unplanned stay. Had to make quick trip home. Elsa is the best she is the harbor master, been there 26 years. Great fuel dock, easiest we have had in Mexico. We were near office, 340 steps to great showers, and good bathroom. Building is aged, think it was built in the 80s. There are 3 good restaurants on the boardwalk. Within a miles walk is the Simplico steak house, second best steak I have had in Mexico. Provioning will need to be in Zwhat. Costs you 120-150 local to get a ride to Sam’s Club or Sorano’s. Each time we did this the taxi driver waited for us. No Costco. Laundry is available within a mile, can ride there is 24 pecos. There is an excellent bike/walking trail that goes all the way to Zwhat. There is a crocodile park between Ixtapa and Zwhat, approx 12 mile round trip ride. Port CPT can be a challenge but more time than convenience. I would go again.
17:17 🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt Josh is that Yacht club, or the chandlery at the other Marina?
17:32 Ho’okipa-LuckyChucky We found a really cool cigar club bar With a pool table in Chippendale decor. In Panama City. It’s a private club but Panama posse gets free entry as long as they spend $25 on cigars, drinks, and food.

11:36 REEF DANCER Jerry Chuck if it’s nominal growth it takes me an hour and a half I use,a whole bottle of air. I use,a 12 drywall knife for the big area. A multitool psi t scraper for the prop and white texture pads for the waterline. Thruster housings I use my small blade scraper yo get between blade and housing I clean the zinc just to see how soft they are I’ve gotten pretty efficient at it lol
11:56 ☸️ Outventure When we’re cruising, I just wipe a bit everytime i come from snorkeling or surfing and just dont let it build up.
After a long stay in a marina ot anchorage with crodocodiles 😉 it takes me about 4-6 hours for the whole boat, but i never do all at once. (44ft cat)
Worst of all is the props and saildrives that i put propspeed on. That stuff really is the most expensive junk that i have on the boat and i am looking for something else in the future / at my next haul out for the saildrives in case anyone has got a recommendation.

12:16 Ho’okipa-LuckyChucky Jerry, thanks for that info. Hey Justin is the yard manager at Marina pest vela in capos Costa Rica. He did a bottom paint for me. Stripped off eight prior layers down to the bone. Then he did two coats of primer and three coats of paint. All high-quality material. Then we did prop C. He’s advised me to just use the microfiber cloth and if absolutely necessary to use on a plastic scrapers. We’ve already burned through a half a dozen plastic scrapers. But no using metal it’s customary. I just don’t know anymore. Thanks for your help as always. Miss you and Deb and Duffy

14:50 Last Arrow Vincent @RED ROVER Kevin on a reconnaissance trip to find a loop from Quepos for the grandkids coming down. Curu was suggested as a no surf landing and good for swimming. It appears that way but right now winds gusting to 30 so will see how the morning is
14:53 RED ROVER-Alison We also had a nice day on our own little island at Isla Tortuga, also right there but exposed to North winds. You could go farther north and the swell disappears but less nice beaches. Curu was fun – enjoyed the hiking too. Lots of monkeys. To the south of Quepos, we loved Drake Bay, a little more active beach landing but really super easy. Great hiking there too – some nice easy jungle walks from the fuel dock at the inn there.

We rented a car from Hertz at the airport in Tapachula and drove about 5 hours along the “coast” road (200) to the Cañón de Sumidero near Tuxtla Gutierrez. We first drove to the 5 miradores with views from the top of the canyon before crossing over, just 10 mins from Chispa de Corzon, our overnight stay. We booked through Airbnb for the hotel La Cieba and loved the jungle property and swimming pool. 20:50 Samadhi @CODDIWOMPLE-JessBram just replied to your message (sorry it’s late we were transiting San Blas to Cartegena) but I’ll share our experience checking out in Linton with others too. Port captain is right at the marina in a shipping container office. Easy, peasy $11.50 for the international zarpe. It to about 15 minutes. We didn’t have to surrender the cruising permit. He didn’t have any comment on how long until we left Panama. Just mentioned that immigration was back in portobello. We told him we’d check out with immigration in Porvenir and he was good with that. The following day we checked out with immigration in Porvenir ($20/person) and they gave us 84 hours to exit Panama. We also got the Kuna cruising permit, which was $100 for our boat and family of 4. We didn’t get a salida crew list from immigration and Panama didn’t ask to see one.
21:01 Samadhi We got stopped by the Colombia armada as we came in to anchor last night. We were not checked in to the country but had our agent’s contact info (whom they called as we didn’t have our security entrance # yet, she had it but we didn’t have cell service to retrieve it). They asked to do a thorough inspection of the boat. Came down into the salon and immediately took cushions off settee and dinette and dove into the lockers where I keep the extra provisions. They took every bag of flour, sugar, maseca, and pancake mix out and opened them up. I was thinking “here we go they are going to toss the boat”. After they were satisfied that my baking goods were just that they quickly glanced in the cabins, heads, engine room, etc without opening a drawer or locker and apologized for inconveniencing us. They were beyond professional and polite. We gave them cold coca colas and counted ourselves lucky. They even told us where we could safely anchor for the night that wasn’t on the chart. As we have often found being polite and respectful and using as much Spanish as possible probably helped make this a smooth transaction. And unlike USCG didn’t ask about the holding tanks, garbage placcards or if I had the rules & regulations book accessible 🙂

10:43 CuranderaDarryn Does anyone have any suggestions for leaving a boat safely on the Pacific side of Panama for the summer? Any out of water storage available similar to Shelter Bay?
10:56 Rob Murray Vista mar is about the only place for that. Great climate for panama, but the lifting has sometimes been problematic.
10:57 Rob Murray In water there are more options- boca chica, Buenaventura, vista mar, Playita and flamenco, balboa yacht club.
11:05 ☸️ Outventure Buenaventura is a nice place if you like to keep it in the water for an extended period and you dont want to go in and out on a daily basis. It is very protected from lightning (as much as it gets) as there are 5 floor bulidings around the marina. Also the area gets much less storms than panama city and less than vista mar.

11:57 Aegis, Mary/Ian Hi Kyrie, would you mind answering a few more questions about Isla Meanguera? Are you fluent in Spanish or do the officials there speak a bit of english? For clarity, this is an international port of entry? We are thinking of going here directly from Guatemala if Bahia del Sol bar is too high. How was the anchorage? Which anchorage were you in to check in? Did I understand correctly that the officials come out to your boat? No running around town? Cheers, Ian

12:30 M/V One Life Does anyone know of a good mechanic in Vista Mar Marina who can help with an issue we developed on our dinghy motor? It is a fuel injected Suzuki 30HP. We are currently waiting for a good weather window to go around Punta Mala and will be there late this week or early next week.

14:07 🦜🍹Kyrie Happy to answer your questions! Very weak Spanish but the official had a helper that spoke decent english. All very friendly. Yes, it does appear to be an international point of entry for El Salvador. Two boats checked in while we were there, one out of Panama, the other Mexico. We came here from Bahia Del Sol with a El Salvador Zarpe and they were fine with that s staying for a bit even though we’ve technically already checked out of the country. There is only one town on the island, on the east side where the port captain is. The anchorage is nice with good holding, but completely exposed if a Papagayo blows. The south side of the island has a more protected bight we have now spent 2 nights in. It’s beautiful, but completely open from the south if the weather comes in strong. Nice beach with just a couple fishing shacks. Rumor is you can buy lobster from the fishermen on the beach, but we haven’t tried that yet. The officials did come out to our boats, but did want you too come into their office to get everything properly stamped.
14:18 Aegis, Mary/Ian @🦜🍹Kyrie Awesome! Great info thanks.

07:53 Aegis, Mary/Ian Good morning. Can any of the powerboats advise what rate you were charged at the marina at Bahia del Sol. The “yacht” rate is considerably higher than the sailboat rate. I have not heard back yet from the hotel on the difference. Cheers, Ian
07:54 RED ROVER-Alison $.80 a foot. Plus the $15 club fee for the week inclusive of power, water, internet and pool/resort access.
07:58 Aegis, Mary/Ian Thanks Alison…the sailboat rate. Good to know. Its going to take me a week to get all the coal and sugar cane ash grime off the boat when we leave Guatemala. 😂

13:44 ALMAZUL Hello PP,
We are newbies to the Posse, and just wanted to say hi and thanks for letting us join in.
We are on an Oceanis 473 from 2002.
Swedish Captain, Australian first mate. We started in Barcelona in 2019, crossed January 2020, had our lockdown in Les Saintes, then a break on land, resuming our voyage in Nov 2021. We are currently in Colon and hope to be in the marina soon. We plan to transit the canal, and sail around the west coast of Central A,then hope to cross the Pacific in 2023.
We look forward to meeting others in the area, and out and about soon.😃

13:58 🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt Welcome Manus and Rebecca. I’m Walt on Knot Right in Vista Mar Marina in San Carlos Panama. She is also a 2002 473. If you plan to come to this Marina, stop by for some beverages. I’m doing boat chores until May 13, when I go back to the states to be with my First Mate, Jeariene.
14:03 ALMAZUL Thanks Walt, look forward to it! 😃
16:55 Aegis, Mary/Ian Thanks Rob. I didn’t know powerboat “discrimination” was a thing 😂 especially based on generalities of power usage. I will see how the discussions go in the office.
17:31 Ho’okipa-LuckyChucky Congratulations on your passage and welcome to the Panama Posse.
The good nautical website is an excellent resource. It will answer many of your questions. Please post as much information you can so we can all learn from your travels. So happy that you joined the Posse
17:33 Ho’okipa-LuckyChucky Walt, We’re at Flamenco Marina and have a good visual of that coordinate. We don’t see any traffic other than the usual. I think it’s all OK. But thank you for posting. You’re the best.
17:49 Samadhi It’ll take you longer than a week! We had some absolutely drenching downpours in Panama after leaving Puerto Quetzal and were so happy for the rain. Finally the rigging was getting a good rinse.
18:12 Aegis, Mary/Ian 😂😂, we had a squall come through here last night. The heavy rain helped a bit. The windward side of all our rigging was black before that.
18:16 SV Chimera @Almazul. Welcome Magnus and Rebecca. We are Dennis and Margaret on 2002 473 also ,SV Chimera. We plan on enjoying San Blas and Bocas and doing S Pacific next year also. Look forward to meeting you

10:47 AZIMUTH – Ash SV Azimuth is in the Caribbean now! Fantastic transit yesterday. Agent Erick’s watchful eye helped us match with a boat and get through in one day when the canal was estimating towards two. We had two of Centco’s line handlers (Guiti and Santiago) onboard, and paired with me and a friend it was a great team. We went center chamber for the first two and signed a release middway to side wall at Gatun. It was a little more nerve wracking, but just fine. We had a warm welcome at Shelter Bay and are heading to Bocas next.

11:06 wonoma – chris did anyone reply to you about this? we are planning on going to peru as well so im interested to hear
12:04 🦜🍹Kyrie Just left there. Posse sailboat rate was 30 cents per foot per day without power, 50 cents with power. If you can do withoit the power I’m sure Ignacio will lower the rate significantly. It is hot and humid there this time of year though (mid 90s in the day)
12:32 🦜🍹Kyrie Does anyone have weather advice on timing the Papagayo crossing? Left Gulfa Fonseca this AM, rounded the point and got about 10 miles down the coast before turning around. Forecast was nowhere near the actual conditions, which were rapidly deteroriating. Oh well, 5 hour run back to Foneca to anchor.
12:37 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce We’re you looking at gusts instead of wind? I find that gives a better picture of what is happening.
12:46 🦜🍹Kyrie We were. Not even close on direction, and the strength was over double the gust forecast.
12:47 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Wow. That sometimes happens with PredictWind. Even looking at all weather models?
13:11 🦜🍹Kyrie GFS and European, yeah.
13:18 RED ROVER Kevin Just a note to give kudos to having satellite charts on openCPN for our more recent cruising in Pacific Panama. So thank you Dietmar and team for your work in compiling the charts and providing the files and instruction to use it all.
We bought a tablet in Barra and got it setup there. We started using it more once in Costa Rica where our chart details onboard got fuzzy on details like depth in, etc. Once arriving in Panama with all the ins and outs around so many sets of islands, the value as an aid in navigation really shined. We are approaching being a week in Las Perlas Islands and we know we wouldn’t have ventured in the few places without the sat charts. We have a second tablet with Navionics using the sonar charts. Comparing both together has been great (as the sonar charts aren’t completely accurate.
I recommend looking ahead at the sat charts for where you will be cruising to make sure you are happy with the details. My comment here is no way is this a knock on what was provided as it has been great, but as a reminder that it’s our own responsibility to check the tools we have.. two items popped up for us. 1. The two southern islands of Coiba National Park has low rez images that don’t provide the typical details as everywhere else. 2. The East side of Isla de Cebaco sat chart is cut off. Fortunately Dietmar and team provided us the tools to make our own charts. But one needs to do that with decent internet.
Have a fantastic day!
14:45 Ho’okipa-LuckyChucky Don’t feel bad. We got our hats handed to us as well. We even had commander weather service side of Massachusetts give us a forecast that was about six hours wrong and 60° off wind direction. It was one hellish night time. One of my crowns even came loose from my teeth. I continue to lobby with management to have gulf of Fonseca covered along tuantapec and Punta mala on the weekly line calls. Maybe you can second that?
14:52 Rob Murray Glad they’re useful!
15:32 Alamos Agreed, “good” conditions left the couch and wife pinned to the starboard side of the boat, broken antenna that took out the radar…not fun…
15:42 SV Second Wind Finally! I’m headed to Panama tomorrow from Golfito, Costa Rica. I understand that Boca Chia is the first reasonable place to check in and I am in touch with Carlos. Two questions: 1. Carlos says that he can have my cruise permit available the day that I arrive if I provide him all the paperwork in advance. Does anyone have experience with that? 2. We will probably visit some islands before doing so. My second question is whether or not there are any good anchorages midway – with an easy day sail from Golfito..
16:14 RED ROVER-Alison Our experience was more like 2-3 days for thr cruising permit but really 4 days from the time we arrived in Boca Chica. I sent all our docs in advance. It is a nice spot though! We went to Isla Parida from Golfito and that was a fun and restful stop.
16:18 🦜🍹Kyrie I absolutely second that. Fonseca has been extremely challenging to anchor and cruise due to the constantly reversing 25-30 knot winds. And of course the anchorages only protect you from one direction, of course. The northern Papagayos are not the easiest to figure out!
20:48 SV Blessed Life @Ho’okipa-LuckyChucky well thank you. Yes it is a big sail. I will give a full report towards the end of our stay.

07:21 S/V Sonho Lolly & Ed Has anyone checked into Jamaica with dogs? Any advice is appreciated.
07:59 Samadhi Do you have a titer test already?
07:59 Ho’okipa-LuckyChucky Laurin!!! Yes, the anchorage between Golfito and Boca Chica is Punta Balsa 8.04.50 N / 82.49.67 W
08:00 Ho’okipa-LuckyChucky Flamenco Marina diesel @ $4.79 per gallon today
08:21 S/V Sonho Lolly & Ed No. She has all get vaccinations and she just got her health pass in Boca del Toro. We are leaving Tuesday for San Andres, Providencia, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and finally Puerto Rico.
08:28 Beata Woohoo. Great pics and glad it was a great experience for you guys.
09:40 🦜🍹Kyrie For all coming to the Gulo de Fonseca, we do not recommend visiting the Moneypenny anchorage. Late at night we (and our two buddy boats) were hassled 3 separate times by the Nicaraguan CG, clearly looking for a bribe. (The same boat came back to all three of us asking to see the same boat papers every time). Nothing threatening, bit deeply uncomfortable. There are many prettier better protected choices anyway.
10:01 Captain Dietmar this is a known issue and is documented in Goodnautical the proximity to their base and snuggling routes adds to the issues in this particular spot
10:11 Aegis, Mary/Ian Probably a stupid question but can you overnight there without checking into Nicaragua?
10:13 RED ROVER Kevin Snuggling routes? Sounds cozy! Where are they on the charts?
10:54 Samadhi I haven’t been there but we decided not to stop there based on the requirement on the website of having a titre. My understanding is titre tests take a long time if you’re in a place where they can be done within the country (such as the US) and really long time if you’re somewhere where it has to be sent out. Anyway, here is the department of agriculture website for Jamaica outlining the process. Not having a titre done also ruled out the Marshall islands for us.

14:12 ☸️ Outventure A question for the Papagayo Posse:
Do you think we may get a PCR test in Marina Papagayo to enter Nicaragua without being checked into Costa Rica?
14:18 RED ROVER-Alison Hola Posse! I have a proposal from Marina Flamenco for our upcoming visit, but does anyone know if they have weekly or monthly rates? Muchas gracias!
14:19 Captain Dietmar you can self checkinto cr
no way you get on dock without cleaning in
14:20 Captain Dietmar we have not negotiated a discount in flamenco for the posse (would like to)
14:22 RED ROVER-Alison I know. I can give you Carlos’ info – he is the ops manager. They send a specific quote, so hard to tell if they have a break point for rates. $2/ft is my current quote.
14:23 ☸️ Outventure We paid the sailboat rate instead of the catamaran rate.
I contacted Carlos on Whatsapp in advance:
+507 6130-8749
Upon arrival, the office wanted to charge the cat rate, but showing them the whatsapp messages of Carlos was ok to get us the sailboat rate.
The marina itself is run down, very loud, feels more like a port than a marina. But i can understand it’s practical to go there to get some city life.
14:25 ☸️ Outventure Any other idea to get into Nicaragua? Did anyone go from the south without coming from Costa Rica? Can you do the test there and quarentine or something?
Does anyone have a contact of someone in Nicaragua that may help?
14:27 RED ROVER-Alison What did they charge on a $/foot basis? Glad you were able to get the better rate! I have been emailing with Carlos. Just trying to figure out if we stay for say, 10 days, if you find yourself in the monthly rate. We have to do a couple of projects so we need to tie up to a dock for a bit. Good intel on the marina. Thank you!
14:28 ☸️ Outventure We were there for 2 nights and i paid 164 us in total. 44ft cat.
14:28 RED ROVER-Alison Thank you!
14:30 ☸️ Outventure There’s some restaurants around, but it’s all touristy, medium quality and expensive. But convenient.

09:52 Pelican – Anne H Noonsite mentions a 72 hour emergency stop and a “One Port Stop” up to 7 days for provisioning / fuel / quick repairs. Curious how up to date this information is if anyone has had these experiences recently.

10:34 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Understood. That makes it simple. 🙏
10:36 🥥🦜PathfinderJPNicole Pathfinder arrived yesterday in El Salvador and had a perfect trip from Chiapas to Bahia del Sol. Not a single long line or net or even another boat, 50 miles out, perfect wind and a full moon to light our way. I think Semana Santa made our trip so good and no one was around to drop long lines or nets. We had an epic crossing of the bar and look forward to the pictures. After a simple check in we went right to Bill and Jean’s for the famous pupusa party. We’re feeling the love of El Salvador already. We are staying at the marina for the electricity and plan on spending the summer here, traveling by land to Costa Rica and Panama and saving on marina costs. November we’ll sail south and anchor our hearts out.
12:09 REEF DANCER Jerry Dietmar in Saint Thomas marinas, are full waiting list and expensive 3 dollars,a,ft per day lots of cats because it’s charter season we got lucky I guess and got a slip in crown bay nothing special my week there was 1400 and I washed the boat.we left and headed back toward st johns and found a great anchorage mooring field only anchoring is in a couple of spots they outlawed anchors because of damage to the seabed the whole island is a park now for diving so st thomas off my list we prefer bvi prices are ok we came from colombia where its a bargain compared

08:20 Midnight B Richard Here’s a question for those with experience obtaining propane refills in Mexico. Should I:
1. Expect my existing cylinders (3 X 907 Camping gas and 1 X Tropigas) to be filled without a problem?
2. Buy adaptors for the existing cylinders – if so what fitting would enable refills?
3. Buy a new cylinder(s) in Mexico?
Currently, the three 907 cylinders (which only hold 6lb of propane/butane each), are accommodated in a gas locker, and the 25lb Tropigas cylinder (bought in Panama) is attached to the transom.
Longer term, we’re planning to cross the Pacific, so it would be useful to adopt a flexible solution if possible.
All input gratefully received…
11:24 Remedy-Karl We just refilled ours in San Carlos at a propane station. It was a matter of walking up and filling, no adaptors needed. Previously in Tahiti we dropped off the tanks and they refilled without an issue, though there it was butane. If you’re concerned there is a company out of the UK that makes a world wide adaptor kit.

07:48 AEOLIAN – Jared Hello,
I’m wondering if anyone can share their experience entering either El Salvador – Bahia Del Sol, or Costa Rica – Bahia Coco with a dog aboard?
There is some differing information online between noonsite and pettravel.com such as the need for a government endorsed health certificate when entering Costa Rica.
Any information on your recent experiences would be greatly appreciated!
09:12 Rainbow’s End, Chris Thanks Vincent, it is pretty smooth here so we will be doing some exploring.
10:09 🦜KNOT RIGHT, SV/Walt When I left Chiapas MX 12/2018 I did have a recent health certificate when we went to Bahia del Sol. But when we got there, no one checked it. Maybe a personal conversation with Bill and Jean at elsalvadorrally (I think I spelled that right) might give you a better idea.
10:11 WildhoodDirk @AEOLIAN – Jared We didn’t enter CR in Coco, but entered in Golfito and the dog was no problem. The agricultural guy did look at the dog and that was about it. We had a vet cert from about 4 months previous but he didn’t need to see it…. obviously all vaccines up to date. Not even sure they come out to the boat at Coco…
10:26 Last Arrow Vincent @AEOLIAN – Jared we played by the rules, new healths certs for our dogs in before leaving Mx then again Bahia del Sol for entry to CR, no where have we’ve been asked to see the dog health certs, even the agent in Papagayo who told us we need certs from last country visited never even asked for them.

18:21 CuranderaDarryn @AEOLIAN – Jared hello. We didn’t do El Salvador but entered CR at Papagayo. The agent we used purposely ignored to health cert we got in Nicaragua. I’ve heard it’s common they turn a blind eye to dogs on boats.
18:53 Last Arrow Vincent @AEOLIAN – Jared the health certs in both Mx El Salvador came from Vets, the Vet who signed had some sort of the accreditation but not sure what they were. We’ve had numerous health certs for our dogs over the last few years traveling. We been asked if we had health certificate for the dogs when arriving in airports in US Mexico and Canada and had to provide it when entering Mx, then got sent to another line and got a separate document after MX cleared our dogs.
19:05 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Problem
Solved with my anchor windlass. It was the foot switch that was going bad. Banana Bay took pictures of mine and the called around. They found an exact replacement Cole Hersee switch. I just finished putting it in and all seems to be working fine. I’m glad it wasn’t the solenoid switch as they were having difficulty sourcing a replacement.

08:08 Lola Doug I will not inject my opinion. Just the facts. I in the canal now. Eric got me checked in within 2 hours an I could have left 4 days later. Great. So we got up early and got into canal in great time. Made it to colon side an 3 hours early. After 5 hours they told me to sign a sidewall waver or get out of the lock. I was already tide up to another sailboat and a ship had all lines up and ready to transit. I said no to the sidewall and they said get out so the disconnected the ship and moved it back. That said see you tomorrow. Eric said it would be noon so did the canal pilot. Now it’s like 4 or 5. Pilot won’t be here till after 3.
08:11 Lola Doug Just to show the animosity. A sailboat arrive late last night and they are picking up there pilot now.
09:14 Last Arrow Vincent @Lola Doug can you explain the sidewall wavier, is it required by all boats to sign? Why weren’t you asked to sign the waiver prior to entering the lock, did your agent mention the waiver. What is your issues with signing the waiver?
10:06 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce The waiver is to indemnify the canal company from any damage incurred while transiting a lock where you are tied to a side wall. It is only require if you are going to tie to a side wall. The walls are very rough concrete.
I certainly don’t understand why they asked Lola to move to a side wall when they were already rafted to another boat, unless I did I understand what Doug was saying. Doug, please correct me if I’m wrong here.

11:52 SERENITY_Vanessa&Ed SERENITY_Vanessa&Ed joined the group.
12:56 Lola Doug Correct. The waiver is to Indemnify them of damages while tide onto sidewall. It is (I think) for masted boats. I chose at the checking in (no sidewall). There is a reason for no sidewall or they wouldn’t have you sign a paper saying the can crash your boat and it’s not there fault or responsibility. I was tide to a small sailboat and we were going to be centered in the lock. They got lazy and didn’t want to do that so they made us break apart. They signed the waiver and went in. I said no and they kicked me out. Again there is a danger or you wouldn’t have to sign a waiver and all this was known a week ago when I checked in.

00:01 SV Chimera Soliciting opinions on pros and cons of leaving our boat on the hard vs in a slip at shelter bay. Thanks in advance
00:07 BISOU Robin And Tad How long are you leaving her for? We always store our catamaran on the hard (can’t sink that way!) especially these days when stuff can happen and you can’t get back. Panama is hot and humid year round and you’ll need a dehumidifier regardless. You’ll also need to pack things away really well. While hauling the boat has potential for problems we feel that leaving her in the water for an extended period of time may be fraught with more problems. SBM has a good secure storage yard. Guardianage is a bit hit and miss unless you keep on them regularly. But very worthwhile. Good luck!
03:36 Dreamer @SV Chimera we left our on the hard there for 8 months. With the prepaid discount, cost was about the same including the haul. Ran dehumidifier and paid for monthly report, all was well. I just figure less wear and tear on the hard, plus i had them do bottom paint and small stuff since it was out.
06:08 ,☠️Delta Swizzler We were told we requested to be side tied. I don’t remember requesting it. But, I didn’t mind it either. They go require less manpower when you are tied. We were also told that we would transit at night, since we requested to be side tied. Now it makes more sense. We actually enjoyed the night transit. As it was much cooler. The locks are lit up like an airport runway. Unfortunately, we did get to see much as it was dark. We started at 1700. Got into Shelter Bay at 4:00. We also had a wonderful advisor.
07:01 SV Chimera Planning on staying on the hard or in slip about 6 months

09:19 Remedy-Karl Contrarian view: on the hard means that your systems aren’t working and that means surprise deterioration when you splash. Plus, land bugs.
09:21 Remedy-Karl Sun protection, but not humidity. They aren’t air tight. We are six months out from a wrap and there are still pieces and residue everywhere.

09:26 SV Chimera Is there that much need for sun protection in the rainy season comparatively speaking?
09:45 Rob Murray Yes. It’s not overcast enough to make a difference. Interior boat temps over 120°F would be a regular thing. Some kind of cover makes a big difference.
11:25 CuranderaDarryn All good info. We are hauling and wrapping at Shelter Bay next month until November. I was wondering if I should request 2 dehumidifiers for a 43 foot boat with a few odd levels inside.
11:27 Rob Murray That or fans to move the air. A single dehumidifier is good the volume of a 45’ monohull or so. Moving the air is important and that’s hard to do in a multihull.
11:28 Rob Murray Here’s our plan. https://www.sailworldcruising.com/news/240382/Laying-up-Sailing-in-Mexico-and-Central-America

03:57 SV Chimera I may not have been clear. We have a boat cover and intend to use it. I was inquiring about pros and cons of “wrapping “
03:59 SV Chimera Thanks Rob for the comprehensive article
05:52 SV Blessed Life @Rob Murray wow. What a good article. I’m going to make a checklist for our lay up in Georgia.
Are you packing up to head home soon?
05:53 Rob Murray We are. We fly out on the 4th.
06:50 Lola Doug Westsail 32 Brisa will cross to the Caribbean in the next few weeks, single handed wanting line handlers. Contact navegante@brisa.uy
07:51 Lola Doug Very clear. Bad thing it is $1700 to rap my boat. Good things are no rain on the boat less birds. No sun on all parts. Like they said it is not sealed like I believed. There is a one foot gap all around the boat below the gunnels
07:52 Lola Doug I will post pics later.
07:52 Lola Doug For wrap
08:22 ALMAZUL Hello all!
Quick report of our N to S canal transit.
We arranged things ourselves and found it to be straightforward. Hired fenders and lines, found our own line handlers.
Advisor boarded at about 6.30pm, made our way towards Gatun locks. When close,
we rafted up outside a catamaran in a group of three; another monohull on the other side. Lines no problem – advisor very helpful.
Onite in the lake; late night but also later start. Advisor boarded at 9.30.
On entering the next locks we rafted up outside a 125 ft tour boat – so did no lines.
Dropped our line handlers off with the fenders and lines, which were collected by a small boat after calling Balboa Yacht club, as arranged with hirer. Small mandatory tip to the boat.
Now anchored in Las Brisas.
Would love to do it all again now we know how things work 👍🙂
08:30 ☸️ Outventure May i ask what are the going rates for an electrician / machanic per hour / day in acapulco?
08:50 CuranderaDarryn Any opinions on the best Golfito area Marina?
08:53 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce We just spent 5 days at Banana Bay Marina. No complaints. Laundry, hot showers, nice little restaurant, and great people that are very helpful. Gabriella was fantastic. Nothing fancy or new, but it was maintained. Short walk into town or take one of the numerous taxis.
09:08 CuranderaDarryn Thanks!
09:12 🥥🦜PathfinderJPNicole Nacho was very reasonable. He and his partner worked many hours over many days on our Windlass (complete rebuild and repair and even sent away for parts) and he charged only $150usd total for the work hours. They also rewired our fridge over many hours and charged only $60usd total for the work hours. It wasn’t a specific dollar per hour quote and was a fantastic job.
09:24 ☸️ Outventure That sounds good. Inflation with mechanics in Panama / Vista Mar hit hard recently with hour rates having doubled in the last 2 years.. (now 65-75 / hour)
10:35 Ho’okipa-Lisa Are you coming to the Vista Mar Posse shindig?
10:39 Rob Murray No, we will be back in Canada by then. Have my rum ration for me. 😉
11:44 SV Chimera Have there been damages to sailing vessels from sidewall transits? The measurer asked me and I indicated no sidewall. Foolishly I signed the papers without checking and turns out he checked yes on “sidewall”. Scheduled for Monday transit. Eric answered we would have to start all over . I am asking for clarification what that means in terms of cost and time
11:46 Rob Murray There have been damages in sidewall transits. Rare but it happens. It can be hard to get ‘off the wall’ with the turbulence in the lock as well. You’re in better shape if you have a thruster or are in a cat.
13:04 Remedy-Karl The were at least two damaged when we went through with the ARC
13:19 ,☠️Delta Swizzler Rent more fenders than they usually supply. We used our bow thruster and had twin screw. Which helped a lot. We also weigh 40 tons. It would be hard to manually push us off the wall. The first two locks from PC side we side tied to a tug. We didn’t have any problems when we went through. Our advisor Rick, was great. He used to drive tugs for a living
13:48 Rob Murray Personally I would take the time hit not to side tie.

14:49 SV Chimera Thank you all for input. If I cannot correct it I will take the time hit as Rob suggested

16:52 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Rounding Burica we got some choppy seas that followed us into Punta Balsa anchorage. All the reports I read said it was surprisingly protected. Well, not today. Hopefully it will settle down overnight so we can get some sleep.
16:54 Rob Murray Look around at the waves. The protection is from reefs, you may see a spot nearby that’s calmer you can move to. Also calmer at lower tides.
16:56 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Ah, good to know. Tide is on the rise right now. We’ll see how it goes. The swell is rolling in from the SE, so the entire area is getting hit by them. No protection from the reef to the south.
16:56 Rob Murray See you Monday. Enjoy the crossing!

09:10 WildhoodDirk Anybody have WhatsApp contact for marina in Barra?
09:18 kudra-simon Hello, I am Simon and I am the owner/captain of kudra – 1985 Gary Hoyt designed Freedom 32. I grew up in Seattle WA and have lived in northern California for the past 10 years. I purchased the boat in Oxnard CA in November of 2020 and from Jan-April of 2021 I sailed from the channel islands harbor in Oxnard to Puerto Peñasco Sonora Mexico where I hauled out. In January of 2022 I returned to the boat yard in Peñasco and after 2 months of projects I splashed and for the past 2 months have been making my way south. I have three friends on board as crew – Valentina from Venezuela, Sarah from Switzerland, and Maria from Mexico. We are currently exploring El Salvador’s beaches while kudra is slipped in Bahia del Sol. We will be moving to Marina Puesta del Sol next week and from there onward to Costa Rica. The crew will likely depart from Costa Rica from which point onward I will be single handing. I am looking for a place to have Kudra hauled out for summer either in Costa Rica or Panama.
09:19 kudra-simon Does anyone know how to get ahold of Marina Puesta de Sol? I have filled out the form on the website, tried calling the numbers from website, and sent an email all over the last week but have not succeeded in reaching them.
09:20 ☸️ Outventure Juanita replied to my email after a day or so.
09:20 Rob Murray Be prepared for significant sticker shock. There are no ‘budget’ haul outs south of Chiapas. You could try carlos in boca chica panama and see if he might be able to take you on, or research Buenaventura or visita mar in panama.

09:22 Rob Murray Chatting with Bill in El Salvador today. He tells me his moorings are almost full. If you’re thinking of El Salvador for the summer, best to be in touch soon.
09:46 EXIT Coasta Rica question. We will be going to Bahia Ballena/Tamarindo soon. Has anyone left their boat there for day trips or even overnight?

08:16 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce What speed? Phone hotspot? Outside of Mexico and Canada T-Mobile limits you to 2G. Painfully slow.
11:17 CODDIWOMPLE-JessBram We pick up local SIM cards for every country. We were told Claro covers Canada to South America and is a good choice, however every time we move to a new country (frequently) the old card stops working and we buy a new one for the country we are in. We use “top off” or “ding” to pay for the data packages. Is there an international plan for Claro so we can have continuity of service between countries? Are we missing a finer point, or is the standard way of doing things?
11:23 Rob Murray The trick with claro is to keep paying (using ding or whatever) in the country you got it in. They used to work throughout Central America (I.e. Mexico wouldn’t, but south of there would).
12:02 Remedy-Karl Read the article for details, but it’s the same plan as you have in the US in these other countries including high speed and hotspot
13:32 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce We just got Tigo SIMMs activated in our phones, and purchased 4 $5 prepaid plans. Is there a way to get on a monthly contract?

Is one of these your plan?
16:02 Rob Murray Yes we have the 39.22 plan. Check if plans have hotspot/tethering (not all do, and most if not all of the consumer plans don’t). The the ring/hotspot was important for us. When we got ours it was the cheapest with hotspot capability.
16:13 S/V Sonho Lolly & Ed Sonho is in San Andres Colombia with SV Tokatee and SV Kristina Marie 😊 we met a lovely young woman named Dejiah from France who is here at the small marina Nene’s. 16:21 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce 👍 What is Ring/Hotspot?
16:25 🦜🍹Kyrie Well good news for the posse. Both Mango and Kyrie were able to self check-in in Playas Del Coco, Costa Rica today.
It was a straightforward process with very friendly officials throughout. First go to immigration, then bring the paperwork from them to the port captain, fill our their forms and they will issue a form to take to Aduana (Customs) at the airport. Take a bus or Taxi ($80 for the taxi round trip) to the airport, get your import permit for the boat there, and head back to the port captain. They will finalize your paperwork and you’re done. For us it took from about 8am to 230pm to get everything done.
16:26 🦜🍹Kyrie Total cost was zero, other than the taxi or bus fare. No boat inspections of any type, and noone other than the boat captain need be present. Bring all your normal paperwork plus the serial number for your main engine.
16:27 🦜🍹Kyrie The only problem is Customs said their system had just been hacked, and their higher ups directed that they can temporarily only issue boat import permits for 10 days, upon which you need to renew. They hope to have it resolved in the next week, and be able to issue the remaining 80 days on our import permit next week.
16:29 🦜🍹Kyrie It did take all day, but saved us over $300 over the agent fees. Hopefully they will get the boat import perimt issue fixed soon.
16:31 🦜🍹Kyrie I also forgot to mention that nothing at all was asked for regarding COVID or pets. No testing, Vax certs, or animal health certificate or rabies certificate asked for.

06:14 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Update: we checked into Panama yesterday with Carlos’ at Boca Chica. Carlos had us send all our documents to him ahead of time via WhatsApp so he could get the cruising permit done ahead of time. The officials had everything ready when they arrived. It took probably an hour and we walked away with all the paperwork done.
Carlos had told us he would front the cash and we could pay him with a credit card. He unfortunately wasn’t there yesterday, but someone called him and all was good. I will pay Carlos with my credit card today when we have his brother take us to David.
It seems with all the delays with the cruising permit, Carlos has figured out how to get it done ahead of time, so people don’t have to wait for the slow delivery of the document. It’s nice to see things change for the better.

06:25 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce This is a gorgeous quiet anchorage surrounded by islands. The waypoints to this anchorage are well marked in the Sarana guide and the Navionics app. We anchored in about 15’ of water. Just a tad rolly, but not uncomfortable.
06:29 Captain Dietmar we did on our way down in 2018
it’s in good Nautical
not the prettiest Anchorage and has a big smokestack with associated pollution… they take on oil there as well…
07:17 ,☠️Delta Swizzler I do want to jinx it. But, we had lost our international roaming with Google Fi. We flew into the US on 3/13 and back to Panama over a month later on 4/21. Our international roaming is working again. If they cancel us again, we will go to a dual chip set up. But, for now it looks like we are back in business!🤞

05:11 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce I’m chatting on WhatsApp with Tigo and they keep wanting me to make a payment, but I don’t have an account with Tigo yet and the website for some reason or another won’t allow me to crest an account. I’ve showed them screenshots and they keep saying I don’t need an account to make a payment. Huh? They don’t know who I am or that the phone number associated with the SIMM belongs to me. Then they say to pay with online banking, but my bank will require an account number to make a payment to. I don’t get it. I’m going round and round and getting nowhere. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
05:13 Rob Murray We had no problem here. They provided us with the account number and link to make the payment(s) via cc.
05:20 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Did they give you your own account number or a generic one? I can’t pick a plan to put in my shopping cart until I have an account, but I can’t create an account.
They gave me a general account number to plug in that has a balance of -$37,151.63. The form asks for my cc info, but nothing is associated with me or my phone number or a plan or amount to pay. I’m certainly not going to provide my cc info with all these unknowns.

05:44 RED ROVER-Alison Bruce, if you are still in Boca Chica, Carlos’ brother can take you to the Tigo store in David. He took us, helped us through the process and we are loving the unlimited data on Tigo. Just an idea for you!
05:52 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Thanks. We went to David with someone else Carlos arranged as his brother want available. He didn’t speak good English and took us to a cell store to buy the SIMMs and the took us to a grocery store to by $5 tickets to activate the card for a week. He said we could only purchase prepaid tickets for a week at a time and that as non-Panamanians we couldn’t get any other plan. He didn’t take us to the Tigo store for some reason and I pressed him on postpaid plans, but he stuck to his point that you had to be a national to get those plans. I think I kind the short end of the stick on this one. Nice guy, but as far as cellular goes we had the wrong guy and I certainly don’t want to pay again to go to David.

Checked out with immigration, they gave us 84 hours to leave the country ($20/person). We also did our Kuna permit which was $20 for the boat & $20/person. We didn’t spend the full 84 hours there as we had a weather window to get to Cartagena. It was beyond amazing, we highly recommend the anchorages where “the swimming pool” is. 13:03 Soulmate-Stu & Robyn Stu and Robyn here, rookies on our 63’ MY. We’d appreciate help with a few specifics? We are leaving Acapulco tomorrow and running down to Huatulco. Where is the best anchorage? I see there are multiple bays. We’ll watch for weather window to cross T-pec.
Also, can you confirm we’ll be able to fuel up in Chiapas? We’d need about 750 gallons. Do I need to call ahead? Thank you in advance
13:56 Aegis, Mary/Ian We took on about 600 gal of fuel in Chiapas. Clean and fresh. Its a high concrete pier so you need to go in at high tide. When we were there, a massiveNavy dredge obscured the access to the fuel dock but there was lots of room to get past it.
14:03 SAN Photos
14:05 SAN The blue cross shows where we anchored in Huatulco. It was a good spot. Only room for two boats and stay away from the side where the pangas go to the beach.
14:06 SAN We were joined by another boat. They said close to the marina is not so good.
14:17 Katmandu-Terry Does anyone know where to buy ablative bottom paint in Chiapas/ Tapachula, ?
15:02 Rob Murray We got comex abc3 through the marina.
15:19 Soulmate-Stu & Robyn @Aegis, Mary/Ian , @SAN thank you so much for the details. Hope to cross paths sometime

10:21 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Is diesel available between Bahia Honda and Marina Vista Mar. I saw some reference to a ship with diesel, but other information indicated diesel was no longer available there. Thanks!
10:48 Rob Murray The ship with Diesel at Isla cebaco has closed up shop. After Bahia Honda it’s pretty slim pickings. There is a land based station at Benao (a tercel) and I think I recall someone mentioning they had a local with a little Ute fetch their jerry cans up and down for a fill there. A dive shop maybe?
11:04 ☸️ Outventure There is a private marina 20 nm north of coiba where you can fuel up. We did it last year.

11:28 WildhoodDirk @🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce You can arrange for diesel through the dive shops in Santa Catalina, but the closest fuel shop to there is about an hour a drive…. definitely something that needs to be pre arranged. But if you were in a pinch….Panama Dive Center at the street intersection are helpful people, and speak English….
11:37 Rob Murray The dive operation on the NE corner of Isla Tigre runs a diesel boat and generator for their compressor. They *might* be able to sell yo7 a few gallons if they can spare it, but I’m dubious it’s possible. The other boast in the Bahia are gas.

11:56 CODDIWOMPLE-JessBram I think you’re referring to the fuel ship at Naranjo? Or something like that? It was not there when we stayed for the night.
12:01 Rob Murray There *used to be* a boat there that served the charter fishing fleet there, called the ‘cebaco bay’. It had gas, diesel and snacks. It has apparently been taken out of service now.

16:29 kudra-simon I will be arriving to Playa del Coco tomorrow evening and plan to self check in on Monday. After that I don’t have fixed plans other then my crew is leaving at some point in the next couple weeks and I would like to be able to leave kudra to visit friends in the mountains and I would rather not pay the high slip fees. 20:20 kudra-simon making our way south into the heart of the papagayos – we found out yesterday when departing El Salvador that we couldn’t stop in Nicaragua because of a visa issue with one of the crew – now having engine overheating issues
20:23 Rob Murray Restrictions in raw water flow perhaps? How is the impeller? Exhaust injection elbow?
20:24 Dreamer @kudra-simon most likely water restriction somewhere. I assume this is a sea water cooled unit with no heat exchanger.
20:25 kudra-simon since the sea water exiting out the exhaust is normal I wouldn’t think there would be an issue with flow or impeller
20:25 kudra-simon it is fresh water cooled with a heat exchanger
20:27 Rob Murray Heat exchanger tubes clear?
20:27 Dreamer @kudra-simon oh check the water pump or impeller for your fresh water system, you have two, since sea water is flowing has to be the other, and the heat exchanger could also be clogged
20:32 Rob Murray It’s really hard to judge the flow in a diesel exhaust system. If it’s down 20%, or the tubes are blocked, you will get overheating. It has to flow like the Orinoco.
21:07 kudra-simon thank you! any idea what he charges?
21:11 BISOU Robin And Tad We’re about to invest in an Iridium GO! (Replacing our iridium phone which has served us well for 7 years of cruising the Med, across the Atlantic and the Caribbean to Panama). Now just mulling over plans. I’d love to hear from Posse members who have used their GO! Along the west coast of Central America from Panama to Mexico and vice versa and how much you used it. We spent 10 months in Panama in 2020 between Shelter Bay and Bocas and never used our data minutes once!
21:12 BISOU Robin And Tad Obviously we’ll get the unlimited plan when we cross to French Polynesia!

07:28 kudra-simon Does anyone know a good marine diesel mechanic in the guanacaste – playa del coco area ?
07:30 🦜🍹Kyrie Colt on SV Mango may be able to help. He’s currently docked in marina Papagayo for a little bit longer.
07:31 Mango Indeed I am a diesel mechanic and I would not mind taking a look. I’m currently at marina papagayo, and plan to leave here by Wednesday maby.
07:42 Moken M&M We used our iridiumGo from Bahamas to Panamá every day for weather, email and messages to family. We have the unlimited plan while on the water I figure it’s cheaper if you need it. And if you need it, you NEED it. We suspended it while off the boat during Covid
07:55 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce I hummed and hawed about getting a GO! and finally decided that Elon wasn’t going to have StarLink ready for mobile yet and ponied up the cash for the GO! We have the expensive plan and have decided coming down the coast of North America that we don’t use it that much. Yes, coming down the coast of Baja we used it and in Central America we are using it due to poor or nonexistent cell signals. We used it this morning at Bahia Honda, Panama with good success to get today’s weather.
My experience with the GO! is like going back 25 years with dial up modems. Very very slow and often disconnects while trying to negotiate a connection. PredictWind support has been great though. Sometimes putting your phone in airplane mode and only turning on the WiFi works better.
We’ve also used the GO! text and email apps with good success to stay in contact when out of cell range. Again, a reliable connect can be somewhat of a problem, but patience is the word of the day when using the GO!
We are planning to change to the middle priced plan as it is probably a better value for the amount we use it. There is no PP discount for the GO! or the plans, only for the 2 higher end PredictWind app plans.
Hope this helps.

11:08 RED ROVER-Alison Question – do people tip their advisor for the canal transit? Just trying to gain intel of what the custom is. Gracias.
11:15 Coddiwomple – Bram We tipped our line handler (we only had one) – a kid that did most of the work.
11:17 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce This was a great stop. It was like anchoring in a lake. No swells, no current, and not much wind. The lack of wind caused it to be a bit muggy at night. We stayed one night and anchored in about 30’ of water. It was so calm we almost didn’t need an anchor. As soon as we were anchoring Domingo and his grandson (?) came out to greet us. They were very nice and he made every attempt to keep the conversation simple so we could sort of understand. He offered fruit and eggs. We needed fruit but not eggs. We got bananas, papayas, a pineapple, and mangos. We asked what he needed and we gave him some AA batteries, half a dozen toothbrushes, olive oil, and half a dozen cookies. He asked for fishing line and hooks, but we didn’t have any. What a wonderful person. We thoroughly enjoyed our encounter with him.

11:28 Coddiwomple – Bram Bahia Honda? Your mention of Domingo gave it away 😁
11:32 🥥🦜No Regrets Bruce Bahia Honda, Domingo’s anchorage. We found it on the Navionics app. There are 3 anchorages in Bahia Honda and this one sounded the best and had the most reviews. It’s also the closest anchorage to the mouth of the bay. I put the same picture and review in the Navionics app for others to see.
