PASSAGE REPORT SV GARGOYLE GREECE TO SICILY

SV GARGOYLE BIDS FAREWELL TO GREECE & HELLO TO SICILY

SV GARGOYLE looks back and says farewell to the Ionian Islands, beautiful morning to start our 30 hour passage.

SVย GARGOYLE is moving towards her winter home and in the meantime is working in a few more adventures along the way.ย  Below SVย GARGOYLEย shares their report of their recent adventures:
Looking ahead towards Sicily beyond the sunset

We said farewell to Greece and decided to sail directly to Sicily to visit the Aeolian Islands before we move to Gargoyleโ€™s winter home. The forecast indicated light to moderate winds, so the crew had their hopes up for the last passage of the season to be a quiet one with the wind in Gargoyleโ€™s sails. The passage was uneventful, but the motor did all the work moving us to our next destination.

With our arrival in Sicily at midnight, Gargoyle tucked into the small anchorage of Naxos and then we made the hop into the Tyrrhenian Sea to our first stop at Vulcano. We had our Canadian buddy boat Hrafn along for the ride and they joined in the fun of climbing volcanos, venturing through small seaside towns, eating too much pizza and of course getting our fill of Italian wine. These islands are truly special and should be on everyoneโ€™s list to visit!

The island of Vulcano is known for its volcanic activity and contains several volcanic calderas, including one of the four active volcanoes in Italy. In 2021 the island was evacutated due to the volcanic activity on the island.
From Vulcano, we jumped to Lipira, Panarea and then finally did a midnight cruise by Stromboli as we headed back to Sicily. Our calm weather was about to end, with one quick stop to see the mountain village of Taormina, now it is time to head to Malta.
Cofin shaped sarcophagus are found in the Lipira Castle some dating back to 5th century BC
