LOCATION IGY SIMPSON BAY MARINA SINT MAARTEN

 NEARBY

Sint Maarten is a unique island with a mix of Dutch and French influences, rich history, and vibrant culture. Here are five must-see cultural and historical sites:

1. Fort Amsterdam

  • Built in 1631 by the Dutch, this fort offers incredible views of Great Bay and Philipsburg. It played a key role in the colonial battles between the Dutch, Spanish, and British. You can still see some old cannons and ruins.

2. Sint Maarten Museum

  • Located in Philipsburg, this small museum showcases artifacts from the island’s indigenous Arawak people, colonial history, and the effects of hurricanes on the island. It’s a great place to learn about Sint Maarten’s past.

3. Old Street & Philipsburg Boardwalk

  • Philipsburg’s Old Street is lined with charming colonial-style buildings, vibrant shops, and street art. The nearby boardwalk offers a great mix of local culture, music, and cuisine right on the waterfront.

4. Emilio Wilson Park & Plantation

  • This former plantation tells the story of Sint Maarten’s history of slavery and emancipation. It’s also the entrance to Rainforest Adventures, where you can take a gondola or zip line down the island’s highest point.

5. The Courthouse (Philipsburg)

  • Built in 1793, this iconic white wooden building with a cupola is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Philipsburg. Originally a home, it later became a jail, post office, and now serves as a government building.

6. Zion Hill (Mary’s Fancy Plantation Ruins)

  • Once a thriving plantation, this hidden historic site is located in the hills near Cul de Sac. The ruins tell the story of Sint Maarten’s colonial past, and it’s a great spot for history buffs looking for something less touristy.

7. Fort Willem I

  • A lesser-visited fort compared to Fort Amsterdam, this 19th-century fort was built by the British and later used by the Dutch. It’s now mostly ruins, but the hilltop location offers amazing views over Philipsburg and the harbor.

8. Sint Maarten National Heritage Foundation

  • A small but informative museum in Philipsburg dedicated to the island’s history, including pre-Columbian artifacts, colonial relics, and exhibitions about the island’s cultural heritage.

9. The Freedom Fighters Monument (Cole Bay)

  • This monument commemorates the abolition of slavery in Sint Maarten (July 1, 1863). It’s an important cultural landmark and a symbol of the island’s resilience and history of emancipation.
