There is wave chop from boat traffic going both ways but once close to shore you can anchor your dinghy or drag it ashore. There are many cabanas with shade you can sit on and order refreshments. They usually have music playing and sometimes a DJ on site.

Days 11-16 found Downshifting almost continuously in beam seas and winds on the port bow and working their way to the port stern. After multiple days of very slow speeds and adverse currents as we headed mostly south, we got into a very favorable current as we exited the ITCZ. (Inter Tropical Convergence Zone) We are now moving along well at 7+ knots and heading SW towards our destination.

We celebrated reaching halfway and getting into single digit latitudes with a shot of rum. It was a nice treat because it has been pretty much a dry trip, a detox that Carine for one needed.

En route to the Equator

On board, we have continued to eat well, despite the rolly seas. Dinner prep is quite an adventure. We have enjoyed hot dogs and baked beans, BLTโ€™s and Ramen, rissoto with hot dogs, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, baked ham sandwiches, quinoa salad, made to order pizza and ravioli with bolognese sauce and probably some other good stuff I have forgotten.

We have done dozens of engine room checks and added oil to the stabilizer tank. We have ran the generator for water making and laundry 3 or 4 times. We have vacuumed dog hair daily. Today we scooped up ocean water to clean the stinky dog grass. All while reading multiple books, listening to music and LOTS of sleeping.

The only boat casualty since the port stab has been our refrigerator door. In the rough seas it flew open rapidly while trying to put food away and broke the upper hinge. Since it takes a dance of all four of us to open and close it safely now, we have emptied much of our food into our RTIC cooler for daily use. That adds the additional task of freezing bottles etc daily to keep it cold.

This brings us to the activities early this morning. We crossed the equator at 0445 and all attained the status of Shellbacks. Everyone was up for the occasion and we drank a toast of rum to Neptune and provided him his own drink into the sea. We also read some appropriate prose that Joseph provided for the occasion. Then, we all went back to bed except those of us on shift. Very memorableโ€ฆโ€ฆ.

We are excited to have less than 800 nm to go and expect to arrive on Nuku Hiva on Saturday or Sunday.

The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), through the General Directorate of Merchant Navy, held the tour of Registration and Inspection of Security, which took place in Isla Colรณn y Almirante, Bocas del Toro province, during the week of 25-29 November 2024.

This tour was led by the Merchant Navy Inspectorate section of the Ship Registry Department (DRB), in conjunction with the Internal Service section of the Department of Navigation and Maritime Safety (DNSM). The Finance Directorate, the Office of Institutional Security and the Department of Maritime Protection of Ships supported this route.

During this tour, the issuance of Navigation Licenses, Internal Service Navigation Patents, Extensions of Navigation Patents and Radio Station Licenses, as well as Navigation Permits for pleasure ships, were achieved.

Through this regular inspection programme, the AMP ensures that all inland service vessels operate under the highest safety standards and comply with existing national and international standards.

Secure Your Dinghy and Outboard:

As reported Irma Deacon, their Outboard Motor was stolen off their dinghy transom on Sunday Night (8th December) while at anchor in La Cruz. The dinghy was raised up on their Davits.

While crimes against Cruisers are rare in Mexico, Dinghy and Outboard motor theft is probably the No 1 Issue to be aware of and guard against. It’s not a La Cruz thing, it’s really a “anywhere thing”, we had our Dinghy stolen in Port San Luis, CA on our way South to Mexico in 2008. One season in the Barra de Navidad lagoon, 9 outboard motors were stolen over the course of 3 months. La Paz has theft that comes in waves and then vanishes, we were anchored in the Mazatlan Old Harbor when an entire Dinghy was cut off the davits and towed away at 3AM by a swift moving Panga, and I had an outboard motor disappear from my stern rail mount one night in the San Blas Estuary. Having been in Mexico since the 2008 Baja Ha-Ha, I have seen Dinghies and Outboard motors get stolen every season.

So how do you protect such an important and expensive piece of cruising gear?

First never leave your dinghy in the water at night, it makes it far too easy prey for a quick painter cut and tow away, but as Irma reported, their dinghy was raised up on the davits and the outboard was still stolen! So always have a Lock on your outboard motor to keep it from being silently unscrewed and removed from the transom. We installed a cable lock to through our dinghy and motor to the davits as well, for a bit of extra “go find one easier to steal” security.

Be safe out there folks and stay vigilant in protecting your Dinghy and Outboard motor.

FRYING PAN

The Frying Pan is a 1929 lightship docked at Pier 66 in the Hudson River Park @ 26th Street built by the Charleston Drydock & Machine Company and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“Lots of pondering going on these past couple of weeks.

I have the cast iron frying pan that my mom and dad cooked in (mom the first 54 years). It was always on the stove top, or in the oven if we had guests coming over. That frying pan served more breakfasts than a number can truly state. Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Ham, and other items Chicken Beef, Pork Chops, Burgers, Gravy, Potatoes etcโ€ฆ Became breakfast lunch or dinner almost on a daily basis.

Such a simple reminder of the daily provisions of a parent. It was a sign of daily love and care. We were fortunate as a family, we never struggled with lack of food, never had to have assistance. Dad was always able to work, and mom made sure everything else was carried for. We never knew if we were rich or poor, because you did not talk about those things.

There was always enough, probably in the early days just enough, but always enough.

I am reminded almost daily of that love from my parents. Often, I use that same frying pan. Sometimes it is breakfast, occasionally dinner, but it is used multiple times each week.

It still is a sign of provision for us. It is a reminder that the cupboards have never been completely bare, sometimes a little thin in the early days but always enough. It a reminder that for over 60 years God had provided for me, His provision.

He has never left me nor forsaken a need.

Much like my earthly parents, He has always provided and loved in ways that were seen and unseen. No matter where I have been I will simply say THERE IS ENOUGH “
