Northern Italy: Liguria and the Italian Riviera

The
Ligurian coastline is blessed with beautiful harbors, such as
Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, and Cinque Terre. Known for its
rugged cliffs and colorful houses, Cinque Terre is one of the most
picturesque areas to sail.

Genoa:
As a historic maritime power and Italy’s largest port city, Genoa is a
significant sailing destination. It features narrow medieval streets,
impressive Renaissance palaces, and a modern marina. The city’s old
harbor is a hub of activity with shops, restaurants, and attractions,
such as the Aquarium of Genoa.

Portofino: A
small fishing village turned upscale resort, Portofino is an essential
stop for sailors. The harbor is framed by pastel-colored buildings, and
it is one of the most exclusive and picturesque places on the Italian
Riviera.

Cinque Terre: A
UNESCO World Heritage site, Cinque Terre’s five villages – Monterosso
al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore – are perched on
steep cliffs along the Ligurian coastline. While docking here can be
challenging due to limited facilities, anchoring offshore offers
stunning views of the coastline.

south of Punta Arena. The bay is quite steep too leaving little
anchoring space for more than a couple of yachts. The Bay provides some
shelter from the north but is open from NE through to south and can be
rolly.

Tuck
in below the headland on the northern side of the bay and anchor in
10.5m on a sandy bottom. This bay can be a washing machine in strong
winds.

CPN is a chartplotter navigation software that allows mariners to
upload multiple charts and satellites images that can be overlayed on
one another to confirm what one sees (or does not see) with the chart.
It is a huge departure from the days of early explorers that
navigated by compass, distant accounts, clouds, and stars. Open
CPN takes navigating to a whole different level filled with information.

SV Whirlwind used Open CPN above to navigate an entrance through a

9) MARYLAND MY MARYLAND

THINKING BACK ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY

I
moved to Washington State over 20 years ago and when people ask, “is
their anything you miss about back east?” I have one simple answer: the
Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay was formed by the southern extent of
the polar ice cap depressing the ground. The mighty Susquehanna
River and the lesser rivers dredged the rest over a long time. The
Bay has been home to diverse and abundance of flora and fauna and the
setting for so many stories in the founding of the United States of
America. I grew up motorboating and sailing on the Bay from the
age of nine until I graduated high school. Most of my mucking about was
on the Elk River in the northern Bay but a few times a year we would
cruise to Baltimore or Annapolis with stops along the way at Worton
Creek or Fairlee Creek. At least once we went all the way down to
Crisfield and really got to experience the magic of the Eastern Shore

11) PEOPLE’ING IN THE AMERICAS

THE DISCOVERY OF THE LANDMASS OF THE MODERN AMERICAS
did
not begin with Christopher Columbus. The most long-standing and
widely held theory has been that people entered the Americas in the
north at the tail end of the last ice age some 10-15,000 years ago and
began to settle across the land. This theory holds that homo
sapiens came across the Bering Straight on a now extinct land bridge
from Asia. However, recent finding across the Americas are
questioning this theory and proposing other theories.

We’re Leah & Kyle from Victoria, BC, sailing around the world… very slowly.

We’ve
lived aboard our current sailboat, a 1980 Gulfstar 44, for 6 years with
our 2 cats and a dog. We’ve sailed through glaciers in Alaska, anchored
in uninhabited Canadian islands, through the Mexican desert, explored
Costa Rica and transited the Panama canal this last season to explore
the beautiful Caribbean chain.

We’re
currently in Aruba and making our way back to Panama to head across the
Pacific to the Philippines to pick up our new catamaran in January
2026.

Gargoyle
and her crew are enjoying the last few weeks of the season cruising
with family in Greece. This week we’ve made the transition west from the
Saronic Gulf to the Ionian Sea via the incredible Corinth canal. To
make things perfect, our daughter and son-in-law have joined us for a
ten day stay before we head towards our winter home, Malta’s Manoel
Island Yacht Marina. Cheers from warm and sunny Greece!

14) THE ORIGINAL GUNK HOLES
OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC

Bay of Islands – Russell, New Zealand

is
an historic spot, dating from the early 19th century and known until
the early 1840s as Kororāreka. In the 1830s it was a lawless trading
center where whalers, seafarers and merchants mixed with adventurers,
deserters and escaped convicts from Australia.

Pressures
on Māori from European settlers Europeans settled permanently in
New Zealand and wanted to buy land for farms and houses. Most settlers
did not understand Māori land tenure processes and Māori law concepts,
or structures for social cohesion and due to these misunderstandings
many skirmishes – some quite bloody – occurred.

On
6 February 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi / Te Tiriti o Waitangi was
signed at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, North-land New Zealand by
Captain William Hobson, several English residents, and between 43 and 46
Māori rangatira / chiefs

Why did the British Crown want a Treaty?

The
British Government was considering establishing a form of civil
government in New Zealand because of the increasing number of British
people who were coming to live in New Zealand. However, a plan for
private settlement by the New Zealand Company forced the British
Government to act. The government instructed Captain William Hobson to
act for the British Crown in negotiating a treaty on the grounds that it
was necessary to obtain Māori consent before establishing any form of
government.

Reasons
why chiefs signed the treaty included wanting controls on sales of
Māori land to Europeans, and on European settlers. They also wanted to
trade with Europeans, and believed the new relationship with Britain
would stop fighting between tribes

15) SAFETY AND SECURITY

MARINE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

No
matter where one is in their cruising season or in the world checking
and maintaining marine fire extinguishers onboard is imperative.
The USCG keep an up to date log on product recalls. See this

Carrying out a visual inspection.
Check
for rust, dents, or chemical deposits. Even the smallest leak will
render your device useless. It’s important to inspect your fire
extinguishers on a monthly basis to check for any signs of a leak or
corrosion.

EXPIRATION
Disposable
(non-rechargeable) dry chemical fire extinguishers, must be removed 12
years after their date of manufacture. These extinguishers generally
have their year of manufacturing stamped on the bottom or have its year
marked next to its UL label.

Refer to the date of manufacturing stamped on the bottle; for example, “11” means “2011.”

Hurricane Beryl (/ˈbɛr.əl/) was a deadly and destructive Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that impacted parts of the Caribbean, the Yucatán Peninsula, and the Gulf Coast of the United States in late June and early July 2024. It was the earliest-forming Category 5 hurricane on record and the second such storm in the month of July, the other being 2005's Hurricane Emily. Beryl was also the strongest hurricane to develop within the Main Development Region (MDR) of the Atlantic before the month of July. The second named storm, first hurricane, and first major hurricane[nb 1] of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, Beryl broke many meteorological records for the months of June and July, primarily for its unusual location, intensity, and longevity.
