Dive sites ring the Guanaja island - discovering a location to scuba dive in the lee of the wind is viable. In addition to the sites surrounding Guanaja, the innumerable cays that encircle the island form an ideal habitat for reef creatures and virtually every known crustacean. For the last 30 days the fleet and vessels in Panama have been waiting for the rains to stop. The dock talk has been relentless with offerings to the rain gods to please stop the precipitation. The upside is that the canal is full and more water means the drought is over and hopefully now transit schedule delays compared to last season.

DEC 2024 vs DEC 2023

December 2024 saw 26 days of rain in Colon of 129 mm vs the average historic amount of rain in December in Colón 143 mm.
So more rainy days with less overall rain. The entire area is saturated and that means that Lake Gatun (164 sq mi) is overflowing. The maximum level of Gatún is 89 and the maximum level of Alajuela is 252. Gatún is very close to its maximum limit and the feeding lake Alajuela is inches away from reaching its limit.
The abundance of water comes after a period of extreme drought, but the aquifers that are responsible for naturally storing the rainwater are getting replenished.

19) MOUNT YASUR 🇻🇺 VANUATU

Exploring and Visiting Mount Yasur, Vanuatu

Mount Yasur, located on Tanna Island in Vanuatu, is one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes, offering visitors an unforgettable experience. Revered by the local Ni-Vanuatu people and celebrated for its fiery displays, this iconic site attracts adventurers, nature lovers, and cultural enthusiasts alike.

Mount Yasur rises 1184 feet above sea level and dominates the landscape of Tanna Island. Its regular eruptions, ranging from gentle bursts to dramatic explosions, have earned it the moniker of the "Lighthouse of the Pacific." The volcano sits atop the Pacific Ring of Fire, a geologically active region characterized by frequent seismic activity. Yasur’s eruptions are classified as Strombolian, producing frequent but relatively mild explosions, making it accessible for close observation.

The ash plains surrounding the volcano, formed by years of eruptions, create a stark, otherworldly terrain. These plains, combined with the volcano’s glow, offer a surreal and breathtaking panorama, especially during sunset or night visits.

For the Ni-Vanuatu ( Ni-VAN) people, Mount Yasur is more than a geological marvel; it is a sacred site. The volcano’s eruptions are seen as the voice of their ancestors and gods, conveying messages from the spirit world. Visitors are encouraged to respect local customs and traditions when approaching Yasur, as it remains integral to their cultural identity.

When you arrive in Tanna anchor at Port Resolution 19° 31.6166' S 169° 29.7016' E a well protected anchorage. If there is no wind you will get some ash on deck though.

Named by Captain James Cook, who anchored here in 1774, Port Resolution offers stunning coastal views and historical significance. The bay is also an excellent spot for snorkeling and exploring and has some hot springs .

WHAT TO BRING

Sturdy footwear: The hike to the volcano’s rim involves navigating loose volcanic ash and uneven terrain.

Physical Considerations

While Mount Yasur is considered one of the most accessible volcanoes, the final ascent to its rim requires moderate physical fitness. The trail, though relatively short, can be steep and slippery, particularly after rain.

The Ascent

The journey begins with a drive through the island’s lush landscapes and barren ash plains, culminating at the volcano’s base. From there, a short hike leads to the rim, where visitors are greeted by the sight of molten lava and the rumbling sound of eruptions. The experience is both awe-inspiring and humbling.

The Eruptions

Standing at the edge of Mount Yasur’s crater, visitors witness one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles. The eruptions, occurring every few minutes, propel glowing lava bombs into the air, illuminating the night sky. The intensity and frequency of activity vary, but the sight is always mesmerizing.

Safety Measures

Safety is a priority when visiting an active volcano. Tour operators and local guides monitor Yasur’s activity levels and adhere to restrictions when necessary. Visitors should follow all guidelines, maintain a safe distance from the crater’s edge, and respect warnings.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from May to October, is the ideal time to visit Mount Yasur. During this period, clear skies and stable weather conditions enhance visibility and access. Evening visits are particularly popular, as the glowing lava contrasts beautifully against the darkening sky.

20) BOAT MEDICAL KITS 🏥

First Aid Kit(s) for Cruising by Rob Murray

When we prepared Avant for offshore six years ago, we looked carefully at what we would pack for first aid preparedness. We could easily imagine a wide range of scenarios where one or the other of us, or another cruiser or local, was injured (grievously), and needed first aid in an inconvenient, remote location. You know, unconscious bleeding from a compound fracture surrounded by crocodiles while darkness falls in some mangrove swamp, or something like that. We determined that:

We needed to be able to react to a broad variety of potential medical emergencies quickly and comprehensively;

That we would likely be short handed in responding (so the response would have to be easily transported by one person);

That the emergency may happen aboard Avant, aboard another vessel, or ashore so we would need to be able to move the appropriate materials for response to the injured person, and then move the injured person from the site of the incident back to Avant or from the site of the incident to another place for treatment or evacuation;

That we would be at least hours, and might be days or even weeks from professional medical facilities and professional medical help (so we would need enough supplies to treat issues for a prolonged period with instructions on how to use them);

That there were ‘levels’ of response that would be appropriate, so segregating supplies into appropriate kits suited to different levels of response would make sense; and

We would need reference materials suited to the kind of ‘medicine’ we would be practicing.

Before you carry on reading, please note that we’re over prepared. Period!

First, we looked for organizations that had worked systematically to solve this set of problems so we could emulate their methods and techniques. The military immediately came to mind, as they have applied science and rigour to responding to emergency medical situations in rustic locations (although they admittedly seem to focus on gunshot wounds and extreme blunt force trauma as the primary sources of injury). We also read up on mountaineering and other wilderness response experiences, and found the ‘prepper’ community had many guidelines, tips and resources that seemed useful. The Ministry of Transport in the UK also had relevant resources. While many sources suggested that buying supplies separately would be cheaper than buying a kit, we found the reverse to be true, and that the kits we looked at offered value as well as convenience.

So after our obsessive research, we equipped ourselves with a simple ‘boo-boo kit’ for day to day stuff.

This is the type of kit you see in a larger drug store, Costco, Walmart, or some other big box store. You can buy them online at Canadian Safety Supplies. They are also available from the Red Cross, St Johns Ambulance or similar organizations online. It’s portable, so we don’t have to drip blood on the way to the bandaids; soft sided so it’s easy to store, and reasonably comprehensive for small injuries. It unzips and flops open to display the contents when in use. There is plenty of room in the carry bag to augment the contents.

For those going to San Blas Islands, Panama. Starting January 1, 2025 all vessels must fly the revolutionary flag of the Guna Yala. There are 2 flags (a reverse swastica and an arms flag)- the reverse swastica was the original flag however due to its negative symbol correlation with WWII the arms flag was adopted. Both are accepted. This is a change from previous years where it was required for vessels to fly the flag during the month of February, the month of their revolution.

"New Puerto Armuelles: A Catalyst for Economic Growth in Chiriquí

The Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) has reimagined the Puerto Armuelles dock project in Chiriquí province, transforming it into an ambitious multipurpose port designed to drive economic development across the region.

Rolando Cuevas, technical advisor to the PMA, explained that while the project was originally conceived as a fishing dock, a comprehensive redesign has significantly expanded its scope and potential.

With the addition of 35 hectares of land and an investment of B/.21.2 million, the new port will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure for storage, cargo transportation, and industrial development.

Cuevas highlighted the project’s transformative economic impact, emphasizing its role in facilitating import and export activities and strengthening commercial ties.

The construction phase alone is expected to generate 200 direct jobs, with many more created once the port becomes operational. These opportunities will invigorate the local economy, fostering growth across various sectors and improving the quality of life for residents.

The significance of this project for the region cannot be overstated. Puerto Armuelles, with its rich banana-farming history and deep connection to the sea, holds vast economic and tourism potential. The port’s revitalization will not only boost fishing and maritime activities but also attract investment and generate employment, breathing new life into the area, according to Cuevas.

Currently 30% complete, the project is on track to begin operations in 2026. The community of Puerto Armuelles and prospective investors have warmly welcomed the initiative, with numerous companies expressing interest in establishing operations in the area. "
