We caught that fish just off the coast of Baja from the back of our sailboat. One of three greater than 30 lbs. 20 nautical miles past Isla Cedros.

It was a blast. Tuna steaks forever. Vacuum packed and in the freezer. We weighed it with a luggage scale.

Barra de Navidad’s past is etched in the age of conquest and exploration. By the early 1500s, Spanish conquistadors had carved a foothold in Mexico, using Barra’s natural harbor as a springboard to push their empire across the Pacific.  

In 1564, the port was the launch site of  expeditions to the Philippines. This voyage forged the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, a lifeline connecting Asia, the Americas, and Europe for over two centuries.

During its heyday, Barra de Navidad was more than a way point—it was the  workhorse of the Spanish empire. Shipbuilding, repairs, and provisioning thrived here, fed by local agriculture. Its sheltered waters of the large lagoon shielded vessels from pirates and storms, making it an indispensable link.

From the Mediterranean to the Caribbean to the Galapagos to the Sea of Cortez to the expansive South Pacific Ocean Posse members have the opportunity to see, and in some cases, swim with a wide range of marine animals.  Most marine life is seen at or near the surface in the upper reaches of what is termed the Sunlights Zone or the Epipelagic Zone.  Interestingly, though what we see is in the merely upper reaches of the ocean’s truly astounding depth.  The ocean is unfathomably deep.  The ocean is divided into various depth zones, each with its own unique environment, ecosystem, and community of creatures.

Long lines, driftnets, ghosnets, and other illegal fishing techniques are the main source of microplastics pollution in the Pacific Ocean. Further these environmentally damaging fishing systems increase the percentage of by-catch, causing many millions of tons of fish to be discarded yearly.

Ollie's Point, officially known as Potrero Grande, is a renowned right-hand point break located in northern Costa Rica's Guanacaste province. The spot gained international fame after being featured in the surf film The Endless Summer II, attracting surfers worldwide with its long, powerful waves.

The name "Ollie's Point" originates from Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North's involvement in the Iran-Contra affair during the 1980s. During this period, a clandestine airstrip near Potrero Grande was reportedly used by the CIA to supply Nicaraguan Contra rebels with weapons. Surfers who discovered the break in the mid-1980s named it "Ollie's Point" as a nod to Oliver North's covert operations in the area. Anchor nearby
