โ€œWhen you're in the middle of nowhere, when you're on this tiny little island, probably one of ten people ever to step foot on this island, it's taken you a week to get there by boat - and you step near to an albatross nest. It doesn't even look at you as the enemy. You get this great nature moment. Until you realize the albatross, along with the thousands of other winged albatrosses next to it, has constructed its nest of trash.โ€

Ocean Posse Tracking

Fri May 16 2025 10:52:00 GMT-0500 (GMT-05:00)

The moon has begun to shrink, and the night was once again pitch black as the sun sank below the horizon in front of us. As I write this, we have just over 25 nautical miles to go to the easternmost cape of Hiva Oa. I have slept a few restless hours and then took over the watch from Lasse. The moon is up now, and flickers its light over the sea, occasionally obscured by clouds. The wind is steady in strength, around 9 meters per second. The waves let us pass softly and then unannounced throw Aura into sideways oscillations. My gaze wanders between our course on the plotter and the wind instrument that shows the wind angle, when I see that something is not right. We are sailing with a large genoa to starboard and the wind is coming in from around 150 degrees. But the wind vane has locked at 180 degrees and is not moving at all. While I stare at the red-lit instrument, the arrow swings around and points straight up, and the numbers showing wind strength are replaced with three dashes...

Now it will be nice to sleep in and celebrate with a bottle of bubbly!

8) LAYING UP FOR THE SEASON
IN THE๐ŸŒดTROPICS

AVANT

Weโ€™ve had Avant offshore for a few years now and have developed a routine for laying her up for the off season. Itโ€™s a fair amount of work, but pays dividends in letting us come back to a vessel thatโ€™s not suffering from mold or mildew, and hasnโ€™t degraded (much) from the weather when weโ€™re away. We have set Avant up to wait for us on the hard and in the water, and each has its unique requirements.

Mold is perhaps the most pernicious hazard for a laid up boat in the tropics. If it gets a foothold, the warm, moist interior of the boat is the perfect environment for it to grow, and it will grow everywhere, on any surface. To forestall its growth, we clean the interior aggressively and then spray all surfaces with a mixture of straight vinegar mixed with a drop of dish soap per litre/quart (the dish soap is a surfactant and stops the vinegar from beading), wipe them with a cloth wet with the same mixture and allow the vinegar to dry in place. The ph value of vinegar is antithetical to mold growth, and it simply wonโ€™t start where there is vinegar on the surface. The smell is overwhelming on application, but fades in an hour or so, and is undetectable on our return. We also mist curtains and cushions with the same mixture, spray liberally in the bilge, and leave a few bowls filled with just vinegar (no soap) in various places around the boat to evaporate while weโ€™re away. We use at least a couple for gallons for this process.

We prop cushions on their sides/edges just before we go to allow maximum air circulation, and leave all cupboard doors ajar as well. Clothing and bedding is dried in the sun and then plastic bagged before stowing below so it canโ€™t get damp.

If weโ€™re on shore power, we leave a cheap 110 volt fan below to circulate the air, and if not we leave our Nicro day/night solar vents running. One year in El Salvador we were able to leave an air conditioner running, which was great, and where Avant is now (Panama) we have a dehumidifier running 24/7 to control the moisture.

If you choose โ€˜electronic remediationโ€™ (dehumidifier or air conditioning) for mold control, you need to plan for power outages and recognize that at the dockside or in the yard shore, power will likely be somewhat unreliable and will suffer multiple outages over the season. Fancy new style microprocessor controlled units will usually not restart after a power outage or voltage drop; old style, bog-simple units with mechanical switches usually will restart after an outage (and as a bonus, theyโ€™re usually cheaper, too). A dehumidifier or stand alone AC will need a drain point, such as a galley or head sink drain, while a window style AC can be set up to drain overboard or through cockpit drains.

Tarps โ›บ

Tarps are used for a couple of things: to keep sun off the decks and thus control heat, and to keep the rain off portions of the deck. We use them, but under the tarps we do get algae on deck. There are cheap tarps and not so cheap tarps, and the cheap blue type last mere days or at best weeks in the intense sun and canโ€™t withstand summer squalls and storms. We buy โ€˜good onesโ€™ (usually theyโ€™re not blue, and sometimes are silver on one or both sides), get them double the size we need, and put them on doubled up. The side exposed to the sun will rot and fail in the UV, but the second layer will usually last out the season. We donโ€™t use the grommets on the tarps, but instead gather the fabric of the tarp around a ping pong ball and secure that with a constricting loop knot (a topsail sheet bend tied back on the bight). The grommets are the first point of failure. After a season, the tarps are garbage.

Run the tarps as low as possible so they have the lowest windage and cover the most deck area. We also have fitted sunshade material awnings that ride low to the decks and are secured to the toe rails and cover the decks. They shade the decks where we donโ€™t have tarps, and where they ride over the traps they add UV protection for the tarps. Sunshade material is widely available at Home Depot and other DIY shops, usually in the garden department. Itโ€™s easy to sew on any machine, and the plastic grommets they sell for it are easy to apply and seem to last well. As with tarps, grommets are the first potential point of failure, but as we have them every foot along the edge, they spread the load well.

ROACH

Bugs ๐Ÿž๐Ÿชฒ

Of course, we live in fear of a bug infestation of some sort while away. We buy cockroach bait (apparently the kind that comes in a tube like toothpaste is best) and roach hotels and place them around the boat. We use the whole tube, as this is not the place for half measures. We have found two dead roaches and no live ones aboard on our return in the 14 years weโ€™ve been laying up. We shudder to think how many we might have found without the poison set out.

Food ๐Ÿฅซ๐Ÿถ

The temperatures in the interior of the boat will be extreme: in the Sea of Cortez, interior temperatures of 140 degreesf/60 degreesc are typically reached daily for a boat on the hard for weeks at a time, and 120 degreesf/49 degreesc for a boat in the water. We have had cans of food explode from the heat, and an unopened bottle of ketchup left aboard cooked in the heat to turn the rich dark brown colour of BBQ sauce. For unopened food we want to try to keep, we get small plastic bin liner bags and after emptying and dosing the interior of the lockers with their vinegar wipe-down, we double bag the food in small batches and stow back in the lockers. If a can explodes it will do so inside the bag and the mess will be contained to the half dozen or so items sharing the bag with it.

Plastic โ™ป๏ธ

Items made of plastic do not fare well. The heat and UV bake them. For items below decks, we wet out a cloth with ArmorAll, Aerospace 303 or a similar plastic treatment (easily found at auto stores) and wet wipe them down. For items on deck that canโ€™t be removed and brought below, we treat them with protectant, wrap them in a layer of paper towel, wrap aluminum foil over that (two layers of cheap tin foil seems to work better than a single layer of thicker expensive stuff) and then secure the tin foil with liberal amounts of duct tape (being very careful the duct tape only adheres to the tin foil and not to anything under it). On our return we find the duct tape has usually been reduced to a skeleton of the reinforcement fabric and is easily removed. We also wrap winches, blocks and all other deck hardware in a similar fashion. UV will destroy the ball bearings in ball bearing blocks.

PLASTIC

Zippers and Snaps ๐Ÿงท

Zippers and snaps like to corrode shut while the boat is laid up. We rub them with cheap dollar store chapstick or lip balm (cheap lip balm is usually a mix of waxes and petroleum oils like Vaseline) to increase the chances they will work when we return.

Elastic ๐Ÿชข

Elastic will no longer be after a season of baking in the heat. Shock cords should not be used to secure anything as they will perish. Elastic in clothing and swimming suits may not be elastic on your return.

Lightning ๐Ÿ—ฒ

Grounding. Most vessels are poorly grounded, and their grounding is ineffective when hauled (yes, you can be struck by lightning when on the hard). You can ground your boat quickly and simply with a set of jumper cables (or add these to increase the grounding) If in the water, we buy a set of cheap but fairly thick jumper cables. Separate into two wires. Remove one clamp from each wire, strip back a couple or six inches of insulation and โ€˜frayโ€™ the end (or keep the clamp and clamp it to a 1โ€™x1โ€ฒ metal plate) to make a better ground connection with the water. We attach remaining clamp to a top shroud or other bit of metal that connects to near the masthead and throw the frayed/plated end in the water. One cable on the port side, one cable on the starboard side.

If on the hard, separate cables and attach one to the top shrouds and Jack stands on the port side, the other to the same points on starboard. In either case, the cables will be trash at the end of the season, as they are not designed for continuous outdoor use. Brushing clamps with wax, Vaseline or any other topical protectant helps them rust less and look better longer. Even if you *think* your boat might be/is well grounded, these jumper cable tricks will ensure/increase the protection.

We gather up all portable and easily de-mounted electronics (hand held VHF and GPS units, epirbs, led flashlights, portable radios, etc.) and wrap them in paper towel, then in tin foil, then in plastic food wrap (secured with masking tape), and then place them in the oven as a kind of double faraday cage. We disconnect all antennas and easily unplugged items like chartplotters, AIS, VHF, etc. and leave them disconnected and just hanging to disrupt possible paths for lightning.

Death

Batteries ๐Ÿชซ๐Ÿ”‹

Small batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, silver cells like A76, CR2025 and CR2032,etc.) are removed from whatever they are powering, gathered, inventoried and given away. They wonโ€™t be any good when we come back, and we need to know how many and of what type we will need to bring when we return.

The ships batteries (house and starting) we leave connected to our solar array for charging while weโ€™re away, to make sure power is available to our bilge pumps. We disconnect (switch off at the panel) the shore side charger as superfluous.

Bilge Pumps โš™๏ธ

We inspect and test our bilge pumps. Avant will take on a bit of water through the mast, and other leaks may appear over the season. We want a bone-dry bilge to keep interior humidity down. We know of several cruisers who have had a battery die due to bilge pump pumping, and another couple who lost their boat to flooding while on the hard (their cockpit drains blocked and water flooded in the companionway in a tropical storm). If your boat has a garboard plug, you can leave it out if youโ€™re on the hard, and if it doesnโ€™t and the concept works for your hull form you can consider adding one.

Through Hull Valves

Through Hulls ๐Ÿ’ง

We close all through hulls and tank vents and stuff stainless steel scrubbies or rolled up green scrubbies in them if weโ€™re on the hard. The scrubbies prevent bugs from nesting in the holes. Some cruisers use bromine tablets (for hot tubs) in their raw water strainers to discourage growth there.

Head and Holding Tank ๐Ÿ›ข

We empty the holding tank and pump in 1 โ€“ 1 half gallons or so of vinegar

and a liberal amount of Lysol type cleanser. Better to have that bake in the heat than what was in there before, and a completely dry tank will form concrete-like deposits.

Sails and Canvas โ›ต

Sails and canvas are removed, inspected, repaired, cleaned, and neatly folded to be stowed below.

Engine ๐Ÿ’จ

Our engine enjoys an oil change, fluid top up and wipe-down with an oily rag before we go, and we leave the compartment door ajar so air can circulate there too. Many cruisers do a freshwater flush of the exhaust as well, but we donโ€™t bother. Outboards are freshwater flushed, given their annual service, and run dry of fuel before stowing below.

DIESEL FULL TANKS FILLED

Fuel Tanks ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ

Diesel tanks are filled to the top and treated with biocide (BioBore or similar). Gas tanks are emptied, the gasoline given away, and the plastic tanks are treated with ArmorAll or similar. We donโ€™t bother trying to โ€˜stabilizeโ€™ gasoline for storage, the quantity doesnโ€™t justify it. Jerry cans are emptied and treated with ArmorAll or similar. The empty jerry cans and gas tanks are stored below.

Propane ๐Ÿงฏ

We simply shut off the propane at the tanks.

Water Tanks ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ

Water tanks are emptied. When we return, we treat them as if contaminated as recommended in this article. The water pump (and all other breakers save the bilge pumps) is shut off.

Mooring Lines and Fenders เงŽ

If weโ€™re in the water, we double all mooring lines and add chafe guard (we use fire hose) at all chafe points. We buy cheap childrenโ€™s T-shirts and slip them over our fenders as extra chafe guard/ UV protection, securing them at the top end with small line or zip ties. Even if you have a hired โ€˜boat watcherโ€™ theyโ€™re unlikely to be 100% available to come to your aid in a storm. They may be looking after multiple boats, or the roof may be blowing off of their house (or their motherโ€™s house) in the same storm that threatens your boat. You need to be secured for a storm.

DINGHY COVER

DINGHY

We have a RIB inflatable dinghy, and some years we have been able to secure covered storage for it at the marina or yard weโ€™re at, which is best. Other years we secured it to the deck upside down, inflated to about ยพ normal pressure, spaced off the deck with dollar store pool noodles and covered with a tarp. Protection from the sun while ensuring its wrapping canโ€™t hold water against the fabric are the keys to success. If you can deflate yours and stow it below, thatโ€™s even better.

Bottom Cleaning ๐Ÿชฅ

If you store in the water, you will need to arrange for regular bottom cleaning. The interval will be determined by local conditions. Make sure the cleaner is reliable, has references, and sends pictures or other proof the job is being done: we know cruisers who found their cleaners simply cashed the payments and didnโ€™t do any cleaning until just before their return.

Contact Info โœ‰ ๐Ÿ“ž

Post a card in the window with local contact information for your boat-watcher (if you have one) and your contact info back home: name, email, phone numbers.

When we return, we find Avant fresh and dirty, needing a good wash after we enjoy a Christmas-like morning: like an unwrapping party of all her tin foiled appurtenances. After some reassembly, weโ€™re ready to cruise another season.

10) KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
๐Ÿณ
THE ORCA WISPERER

orcas.pt

Orcas are intelligent and social creatures, but interactions with boats can be unpredictable.

It's crucial to be informed, prepared, and act responsibly when encountering orcas.

WHAT WORKS

Use your engine: If you are in a known orcas hotspot area, it's advisable to use your engine to maintain some headway through the water. This can help deter interactions with orcas.

Stay in shallow waters (when safe): When possible, navigate in shallow waters (ideally following the 20-meter depth contour or less) within the safety limits and capabilities of your vessel.

Report encounters: If you spot an orca or are involved in an interaction with one, immediately report the incident to the MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Center), authorities, and nearby vessels using your boat radio.

Be informed: Educate yourself about orcas and potential interactions with boats. There are many resources available, including websites like orcas.pt, apps, and updated maps.

Train your crew: If you have a crew, train them on how to react calmly and safely in the event of an orca encounter. A well-prepared crew can make a significant difference.

Maintain a Constant Vigilance: Designate a crew member to constantly scan the horizon for orcas, especially in known hotspot areas.

WHAT NOT TO DO

**Do NOT stop your boat if you spot or your rudder is attacked by an orca. Current scientific research and recommendations from Spanish Authorities strongly advise against stopping. Stopping has been linked to more prolonged interactions and increased risk of damage to your vessel.

Avoid nighttime sailing in orca hotspots: Whenever possible, avoid sailing at night in areas known to have orcas.

Maintain awareness: Even if you don't stop, remain aware of the orcas and their movements.

Additional Action Items:

Consider joining orcas.pt discussion groups (if available) for more detailed information and updates.

There is always some risk involved when encountering wildlife. By following these recommendations and using your best judgment, you can help ensure a safe and responsible interaction with orcas.

18) MOSQUITOES ๐ŸฆŸ vs NO SEEMS

No-see-ums are significantly smaller than mosquitoes, making them much harder to see and often unnoticed until their bites are felt. No-see-ums, also known as biting midges or sand gnats, are typically around 1-3 mm long, while mosquitoes are generally between 3.5 - 10.0 mm inches long

the hunt

Mark dons his battlegear!

Hey All! I am sharing our write-up on no-see-ums:

Mirror-watered anchorages are a sailor's dream, right? Some of the best memories we have are captured photos of Serenity during sunset, with warm colors seen both in sky and still waters. It's in these idyllic settings that Kathryn, Lapa (dog) and I have produced some of our worst welt enshrined memories! This is all thanks to a pesky pest that goes by many names: no-see-um, midge, jejene, and our favorite, MOFO (edited to keep civil). We have encountered MOFOs in various concentrations from the Sea of Cortez to Panama. The worst was at the infamous Bahia Amortajada, also featured in Steinbeck's "Sea of Cortez" book. Why did we ignore warnings made!? Read our account of our to the death battle in the review we left here: https://www.noforeignland.com/place/4548328947712000.

Yesterday we decided to leave the anchorage at Bocas Town with its near incessant wake producing lancha traffic for the super protected waters of Groun...

noseems

Poor Kathryn had to contend with both stingray and MOFO bites in Mexico.

Yesterday we decided to leave the anchorage at Bocas Town with its near incessant wake producing lancha traffic for the super protected waters of Ground Creek. We're in a "lobe" on the East side of the anchorage, which offers a cut through which Starfish Beach is less than a mile's paddle away. The hope was to stay here for a week, riding out predicted storms with their associated squalls. No longer! Starting at the notorius "witching hour" of sunset, and continuing through the morning, Serenity and crew have been inundated by MOFOs. Fortunately, we have a few strategies we use to fight back.

Screens are a must. There is trade-off between maximizing cooling breezes and keeping insects at bay. ANY barrier to MOFOs is far better than none. Note, however, these guys are so small they can crawl through the netting of our screens. I guess there's reason they've earned the moniker "no-see-um". A simple solution to this challenge is to apply an oil to the screens. As the bloodthirty MOFOs try to crawl through in their search of your ears and ankles, they get trapped in the oil and die. We use "Shake + Shield no-see-um repellent" (see photo), which has a number of essential oils. One spritz for the body, one for the screen. It's super easy are far less expensive to make your own. Place a few drops of essential oil (citronella, peppermint, citrus and even lavendar all work) per ounce in a non-staining oil such as coconut or Avon Skin So Soft (mineral oil based). Apply liberally on a rag and wipe skin and screen.

KAVA

If and when swarmed, vacuum cleaners suck big time, in a good way. After donning protective clothing (long pants and hoodie), turn on one light in the affected area and vacuum away, preferably giggling like a mad scientist. This greatly reduces their population whilst providing tremendous karmic satisfaction.

netting

Insect repellants repel, but not completely. It should come as no surprise that we've found few repellents that are 100 percent effective. We try to avoid toxic chemicals like DEET which can be absorbed through the skin. Avon Skin So Soft was reputed to be a decent repellent on it's own. We found adding the essential oils mentioned greatly improved results. The Shake + Shield is the best commercial product we've come across so far.

Good luck, my fellow explorers, in staying MOFO and welt free! Photos are forthcoming.

This morning's collection by the helm station.

We have these for mosquito coils. Highly recommended. If used upside down (open side down), keel the coils burning even in the rain.

4) EXPERIENCES OF MEETING THE GUNA YALA

GUna Yala

It touched us deeply visiting this remarkable place.

Fishing and coconut trade have historically been the main sources of income for the Guna. However, in recent years, tourism has grown, with visitors drawn to the pristine islands and the unique cultural experiences. Despite this, the Guna have imposed strict regulations to protect their land and way of life, ensuring that large-scale development does not threaten their autonomy.

The Guna people have maintained a strong cultural identity, resisting outside influences while preserving their traditions. They govern themselves independently, following their own laws and customs. One of their most distinctive traditions is the creation of molas, intricate, hand-sewn textiles that depict geometric patterns and natural themes. Molas are not only an art form but also a significant part of Guna women's traditional clothing.

The islands of Guna Yala face challenges due to climate change, particularly rising sea levels. Some communities are already considering relocating to the mainland. However, the Guna remain resilient, continuing to live according to their traditions while adapting to modern realities.

Visiting Guna Yala offers a rare opportunity to experience a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.

What an absolutely magical week in Grenada! โœจ Carnival kicked off with the traditional Jab Jab bands emerging from the darkness of the night to parade freely through the town at 4am Monday morning. Covering themselves and anyone in their vicinity with motor oil.

The energy was electric and the celebrations kept the vibe alive all the way to Fancy Mas! This has been an unforgettable experience. ๐Ÿช…

SY JUBEL ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Kyle & Leah - Gulfstar 44'
https://www.instagram.com/svjubel

Grenadaโ€™s Spicemas (Carnival) is held in July and August rather than the traditional pre-Lenten February/March period because of its historical evolution and cultural influences.

Most Caribbean carnivals, including those in Trinidad and Brazil, follow the pre-Lenten tradition, where celebrations happen before Ash Wednesday. However, Grenada shifted its Carnival to August in 1981 to avoid direct competition with Trinidad & Tobagoโ€™s Carnival, which is one of the largest in the Caribbean.

By moving Spicemas to August, Grenada emphasized its unique African and Caribbean heritage, focusing more on traditions like Jโ€™ouvert, Monday Night Mas, and Shortknee & Jab Jab masquerades, which have roots in West African and post-slavery traditions.

THE CARNIVAL IN VENICE

vENICE

Carnival in Venice (Carnevale di Venezia) dates back to at least the 12th century and became famous during the Renaissance. It was originally a period of indulgence before Lent. Venetian masks are the symbol of the carnival, ranging from simple designs to elaborate, gilded creations. Common mask styles include:

  • Bauta (full-face mask with a prominent chin)
  • Colombina (half-mask, often decorated with gold and feathers)
  • Medico della Peste (Plague Doctor mask with a long beak)
  • Moretta (small, oval, black velvet mask held by biting a button)

THE CARNIVAL IN RIO IS UNDERWAY NOW

RIO

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is one of the biggest and most vibrant festivals in the world. The festival has roots in Portuguese and African traditions, dating back to the 18th century. It evolved from colonial masquerade balls into a massive public celebration and lasts for about five days, from Friday to Ash Wednesday, before the start of Lent. The highlight is the Sambadrome parade, where top samba schools compete with extravagant floats, dazzling costumes, and high-energy performances. Samba is the heartbeat of the carnival, with infectious drum rhythms and high-energy dancing. Other styles like Axรฉ and Frevo are also popular.

King Momo is the symbolic ruler of Rio de Janeiroโ€™s Carnival! Every year, the festival kicks off with the mayor handing over the โ€œKeys to the Cityโ€ to King Momo, who then officially declares Carnival open. He represents joy, indulgence, and the spirit of revelry.

The tradition comes from the Greek god Momus, the god of satire and mockery, and has been a major part of Rioโ€™s Carnival since the 1930s.

ONE OF THE TOP WRECK DIVE SITES IN THE WORLD

USS COOLIDGE

On October 26, 1942, the the SS President Coolidge attempted to enter the harbor of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. However, as the ship entered the largest channel, it struck an American mine. The mine was unfortunately omitted from the shipโ€™s sailing orders for the day. The first mine struck near the engine room, and shortly after a second mine would hit near the stern.

Off the ship

Almost immediately, Captain Henry Nelson knew the ship was a loss. However, Captain Nelson held out hope and attempted to run the ship aground, with the idea that the shipโ€“and its contentsโ€“could potentially be salvaged after the event.

MAN OVERBOARD

The SS President Coolidge was built in 1931 and had started its career as a luxury ocean liner. After the start of World War II, the ship would be utilized as a troopship transporting American soldiers from Hawaii to Manila

underwater

To this day, the SS President Coolidge sits where it sank off the coast of Espiritu Santo. In 2013, a diver located the remains of Captain Euart, who was then recovered later in 2014 and given a full military funeral service.

Despite its popularity as a diving location, a few years after Vanuatu won their independence in 1980, the government declared no salvage or recovery of objects would be allowed from the SS President Coolidge. Many experienced divers have explored its resting place and witnessed the remaining helmets, guns, and even Jeeps. Divers even kiss the โ€œLadyโ€ โ€“ a statue of an Elizabethan lady and her horse that once sat in the first-class smoking room โ€“ for good luck

MIGRANTS MISSING

SHIP BOAT WITH MIGRANTS IN GUNAYALA

From Gunayala this morning a shipwreck of a panga with 19 migrants going to Armali (Puerto Obaldia) was reported. The boat "ABDON" of the property of Evencio Gonzรกlez de Goedub, yesterday in the afternoon hours, approximately, at 2:00 pm left from Port Dibin to Armali (Port Obaldia, as part of the operation that is coordinated by the national authorities who dismissed the group of migrants going back to their respective countries. Three boats (Paola, Elhier and Abdon) set out for the same destination.

According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred around 7:00 pm and this morning a group of workers from the Mamsuggun community, located in Sector 3, encountered a group of 10 migrants on the coast. The 10 are in Mamsuggun who are being cared for by the community.

Until this time in the morning there is no information about the rest of the people who came on the boat, including the driver (Ismael Benรญtez) sailor (Olonaknibler Rodriguez). The migrants are all of Venezuelan origin, of whom 7 are minors and 12 adults.

The Gunayala General Congress Maritime Transport Secretariat team is following up on this unfortunate incident, where the rest of the people who were on the boat are still missing. While the rescued ones are taken care of by the population of Mamsuggun so that they can feel comfortable while the national authorities take care of them. ***SIC/AML/22/02/2025

RESPONSE FROM GUNA YALA CONGRESS
ABOUT MIGRANTS IN GUNAYALA

The General Congress of Gunayala, the administrative authority of the people of Gunayala, expresses its regret, first of all, for the events that occurred on February 21 with the migrant brothers in our territory. Our solidarity goes out to their families and people who are being forced to suffer these hardships after their aspirations to reach the United States were frustrated.

We want to inform the regional, national and international public opinion that we are a peaceful and supportive indigenous people; and on the eve of the celebrations of the 100 Years of the 1925 Dule Revolution that gave us autonomy, we have been surprised that our territory, especially the sea route, had become a migratory route for South American brothers who are returning to their countries of origin.

After seeing the flow of South Americans on foot, traveling by taxi, by Uber, through the Llano-Carti entrance, on February 18, 2025, we met with the leadership of the National Border Service (SENAFRONT) to demand answers and jointly coordinate the passage through Gunayala. At that meeting, they told us that the president of the republic and the security forces knew about this case and that they were going to coordinate with the General Congress of Gunayala in an appropriate and orderly manner.

However, that is not happening. From the beginning we were clear about the sailing times and at what time the migrants should be at the ports. Unfortunately, Gunayala is not in a position to receive and care for these human beings in adequate conditions, and we are surprised that neither the United Nations nor the government of Panama have provided resources for a shelter, boats, cars, or food to care for these people. In a supportive and humanitarian manner, we are doing everything possible so that they can travel to Colombia.

The daily flow of migrants is becoming a serious problem for Gunayala. In this regard, we call on the national government, the United States government and international organizations to suspend the massive arrival of migrants to our territory. Gunayala itself does not have the conditions to receive and address this situation, which should be the full responsibility of the State with its government.

We do not refuse to offer our support, but we will not allow policies to be imposed on us that will affect our internal security. Gunayala lacks sufficient equipment, infrastructure, or means of transportation to deal with this problem that, due to the governments, is causing human mobilization that leaves their country in search of better living conditions. ***

Gunayala, Panama, February 23, 1925

The events of February 21 refers to the loss of an inter-island panga, with some of the passengers dead and others still missing (according to the best information Iโ€™ve been able to find)

CURRENT HOURGLASS SHOAL

Depths of 30-120 feet have been reported on the Hourglass Shoal about 7 miles east/southeast of Cabo Engano. Strong tide rips and heavy swells, caused by the meeting of contrary currents, are quite visible and mark the position of this bank well. The seas in this area are a by-product of the Equatorial Current as it falls into the deep Puerto Rican Trench. The current pushes water throughout the Canal de la Mona and the shoal, although deep enough for navigation, offers a barrier to the energy in the water. This often translates into large, rough seas in the area of the Hourglass Shoal and you donโ€™t want to be there when it kicks up.

MOna Passage

Weather Patterns

Crossing the Mona from the Dominican Republic keep an eye out for squalls that work their way off the western coast of Puerto Rico You can wait in Boqueron and watch those heads move out in the evening, one after another, following the lay of the mountains west out to sea.

The tidal currents set north and south throughout the Canal de la Mona and are UNPREDICTABLE!

A current of about 1-knot for the northerly and southerly currents in the Mona. In summer, when the trade wind has slackened and blows more from the east and east/southeast, a strong counter-current sets east off the southern coast of Hispaniola.

Destiny

This is to update on entering Ecuador.

I had to enter Ecuador due to a broken part on my spinnaker pole and since I would be going downwind quite a bit, I decided to get it done in Puerto Amistad.

Please contact Gene Tatum and advise status. Normally should be given 48 to 72 hours and should be an actual emergency stop for repairs and diesel.

I got my repairs done within 49 hours and am now back in anchorage and will leave towards Gambiers from here.

I would like to state my experience in Amistad was excellent and if I had known earlier I would probably have spent my time here as opposed to Panama.

A point to note that the entrance requires a pilot and the fee is USD 35. WORTH IT!

The marina has not recovered since Covid and the implementation of the Autografo. It's jus a procedure and not difficult to do and there is a way the marina will offset for long term residents.

24) PANAMA CANAL
โš ๏ธ
INCIDENT REPORT

SV Triaena, February 26, 2025

First Mate Perspective on Incident (corroborated with input from Captain and crew)

Our objective in sharing our story is to educate and offer information that may make transiting the Canal safer for other boaters.

The night before our transit our Agent, Erick Galves, Concentenario Consulting, delivered 8 large fenders and 4 โ€“ 125 foot, 1.5 inch blue, heavy weight nylon lines. This required is by the Canal Authorities.

Our Advisor, came on board at 4:45AM. After introductions, he said that he had been an advisor for 18 years and had done the transit 1,400 times. He told us that no other boats were scheduled and that we would be making the transit alone. If we could get through Lake Gatun in time, it would be a one-day transit.

Prior to entering Miraflores Lock #1 we began to prepare. Lines were positioned and instructions were made as to how catch the line from the Canal workers, secure it to theblue line, and send it back to the Canal worker.

Once we saw the ship that we were to share the lock with (Viking Adventure, 656 foot long and 114 feet wide, car cargo ship), I expressed concern about prop wash. Our Advisor assured me that it would be no problem and that the ship was a โ€œvery light boatโ€.

On entering the lock, we performed as instructed. I was on the port bow line. Our three other line-handlers were in position at the starboard bow, and port and starboard stern.

The instructions were given, and we sent out our blue line. As we tightened the line, I discovered that our bow cleats (measuring 9 inches long and 1.5 inches clearance ) were too small to complete a figure eight hitch with the large blue lines. Our Advisor came to assist, and it was decided to move the line to a winch on the cabin top. It was chaotic with shouted instructions and commotion as we worked to tighten the lines, keeping the boat in the center of the lock. The canal began to fill, and each position focused on bringing the line onboard to maintain tension and the boat centered.

The ship ahead of us began to depart the lock and a wall of prop wash approached. Our boat violently healed to port and then to starboard. My port bow line began to slip and I was unable to secure it. At this time, Phillip yelled that his starboard bow line was going too.

The Advisor came forward and tried to help. It was not possible to secure the port line and the line went overboard. We were now attached with just one starboard bow line and two stern lines. The starboard line remained on board due to a kink that got caught in the bow fairlead. (We believe that this saved the boat and crew.)

With no tension on the port bow, the boat violently turned to starboard and crashed into the wall. We were now at 45 degrees to the canal wall, pinned by the extreme prop wash.

Without a port bow line the boat moved back, towards the gates. The stern lines kept us from hitting the gates. The remaining starboard bow line kept the boat from swinging to port. Without it we very likely would have turned 180 degrees along the canal wall, or head on into the steel gates.

Our 38 HP Beta Marine engine was no match for the raging prop wash and our engine alone was not able to get us off the wall.

The Canal employees made several attempts to throw us a line for the port bow before one landed on the boat. With it, we were able to pull in a blue line and start winching the boat off the wall. Now, the ship ahead of us had moved far enough away that the prop wash lessened.

Tom was bleeding badly from his hand, Phillip had a big scrape on his arm, and I had blood on my shorts but did not know where it was coming from.

We immediately proceeded into Lock #2. This time it went better. All lines were now lead to large winches (cabin top and cockpit), with two wraps, and then secured to a cleat.

When the prop wash hit, we heeled violently, but held. In Miraflores Lake, we took the time to address Tomโ€™s wound. He had crushed the end of his little finger and lacerated a large flap of skin. We cleaned and dressed the wound and he was able to continue driving the boat.

The short break in Miraflores Lake gave us a few minutes to examine the damage to the bow. The teak base under the chainplate had split and the stainless steel chainplate had been moved about 3 inches to port. The headstay was loose and we were concerned about the stability of the mast. We rigged a halyard to a storm sail fitting on the bow to add additional support and determined it was safe to proceed.

Lock #3, again we experienced violent prop wash, but our lines held.

While in the Culebra Cut, we were told that we could either be on a side-tie to the concrete wall (versus in the center) or stay the night in Lake Gatun and proceed the next morning.

We had concerns about a side-tie against the rough concrete wall, but wanted to complete the trip and get Tom medical attention. We signed a waiver for a side-tie.

On entering the Balboa Locks, we were told we would be tossing the blue line onto the wall. On arrival, there was just one Canal employee to secure our lines. โ€œTossing the blue line onto the wallโ€ required throwing about 20 pounds of line up 10 feet and out, more than 15 feet. The employee got the bow line secured while the stern line began to pull off the wall. He was able to catch it before it fell into the water. This additional stress was not welcomed after all we had experienced earlier. As the water dropped, we successfully kept the boat off the wall using fenders and by pushing hard with two boat hooks.

This was repeated two more times until we were out of the Gatun Locks.

On arrival in Shelter Bay, we were able to inspect the damage to the boat. The ยฝโ€ stainless steel chainplate is severely bent and is moved several inches to port. It is lifted a half inch off the deck The teak trim is cracked, several bolts sheared, but the chainplate held. We are thankful for a 1979 hand-laid, 1โ€ thick fiberglass hull and a keel stepped mast. We believe the strength of our gear and hull prevented us from losing the rig. We are unable to assess the damage to the fiberglass until we remove the chainplate.

What we learned:

We feel that our Advisor should have done a trial run before entering the locks to test how the blue lines were to be run and secured. The process used in Locks #2 and #3 worked. If we had done this before the crisis, we could have avoided the problems in Lock #1.

The pre-transit instructions should include the minimum cleat size and clearance for the mandated Canal line. We believed our 9โ€ cleats were adequate, but they did not have enough clearance or length to allow a complete figure eight knot.

In our experience, the only way to adequately manage the line is to put it around a winch, double wrap, and then secured it to a cleat. There is just too much tension on the line to control it straight to a cleat.

Communications from the Advisor would have been improved if it included the the position that he was yelling about.

We were not adequately prepared for the force of the prop wash from the ship ahead of us.

We discussed this with the Advisor several hours earlier and he minimized our concern.

The Advisor should have called out that the ship ahead was beginning to move and how to prepare to hold the boat steady. We have since learned that the Advisor could have called the captain of the vessel ahead of us and requested a slower start. It is possible that this was communicated and that is why Locks #2 and #3 were more manageable.

With just one, 11.5 foot beam sailboat in lock, and the lock 110 feet wide, there is 50 feet line out at each position to keep the boat in the middle of the lock. It would have been helpful to plan in advance how we were going to manage the weight of the line in the water.

In hindsight, running the line through the bow fairlead caused more friction and made the lines harder to haul in. If we had run it directly to the cleat and used that to keep the line near the bow while it went to the cabin top winch, we believe it would have worked better.

However, it was the fairlead that held the starboard bow line and saved us from greater harm. I donโ€™t think the Advisor understood the dynamics of a sailboat when the bow is caught in turbulence and the limited maneuverability available. His instructions to get the boat off the wall were not realistic and we relied on our skill and knowledge of the boat to do so.

It would also have been helpful to understand how we were going to get a port bow line back on board. It was only when monkey fists started hitting the water around us that I was able to see how it was going to happen.

We should not have been required to make a choice of staying the night in Lake Gatun or a side-tie simply due to a lack of Canal employees.

We should have had two Canal employees to assist in taking our lines in the Gamboa Locks. With only one employee, getting secured to the wall and getting the lines released from the top of the wall was uncertain. Our advisor had to yell out several times and call on the radio to get assistance. We had had a very stressful day, and this added to it.

Having an agent (we hired Erick Galves, Concentenario Consulting) was beneficial. He learned of Tomโ€™s injury and arranged a cab to be waiting at Shelter Bay Marina to take him to the hospital. He has also been helpful in communicating with the Canal Authorities.

Should we have had a paid line-handler on board? This is a tough call. We evaluated it and decided not to hire one. Yes, it is possible that this would have better have prepared us for the first lock and the prop wash. The downside is that this person comes onboard the evening before, and dinner and a bed are required. As a 1979, 41-foot boat, we have just one V-berth stateroom, one head, and a small saloon with a pull-out berth that fills the entire walkway. Sharing it with an unknown person was uncomfortable. Also, if we were required to overnight in Lake Gatun, the advisor leaves, but the paid line-handler stays on board. We could accommodate a family of 3, plus ourselves, but it would have been very uncomfortable to sleep five, unrelated adults in such close quarters.

We believe that we were well-prepared and had planned our transit carefully. We believed that our boat was well-equipped as well. Our crew had been our buddy boat for over 500 miles. They too are very seasoned sailors with over 10,000 miles logged. We were confident in our ability to communicate and to act together as a team to safely transit the Canal. All of us read the written materials, watched the Centenario and Shelter Bay videos, and discussed transiting with other cruisers to learn from their experience. We are terribly disappointed that despite all our preparations, our transit was so traumatic to the crew and damaging to our boat.

We accept responsibility for our plans and actions and are not trying to pass the blame. We want to share this story in hopes that it saves someone else.

We do think that the risk of a small boat in a lock behind a very large ship is understated. In the Miraflores lock the cruiser is positioned very close (30 feet?) behind the ship and subject to the full force of the prop wash . In the Gatun Locks, the cruiser is in front of the ship and leaves the lock first. We have not heard an explanation as to why a cruiser boat is ever behind a ship.

We also caution anyone to pick their crew carefully. We had an excellent crew and still faced circumstances we could not overcome without injury and damage. Had we lost the starboard bow line, we believe we would have swung around and been pinned to the gates.

It is easy to imagine that the boat would have been lost and the crew in great peril.

2) ULUS ๐Ÿ›ถ

CANUS

Guna Yala canoes in the San Blas, also known as ulus, are made from mahogany, bamboo, poles, fronds, and molas. Mahogany is a hardwood that's considered the best for the rainforest

Ulus are a lifeline for the Guna people and a common sight for cruisers in these stunning islands. Youโ€™ll often see villagers paddling their ulus out to anchored yachts, trading lobsters, crabs, and other fresh catchesโ€”or their famous molas, vibrant appliquรฉd cloth designsโ€”for a cold drink, a hammer, or even a quick phone charge.

SAN BLAS

Ulus are built tough and simple. Their sprit sail rigs are no-frillsโ€”just a rough-hewn spar to hold up the peak and a sail made of whateverโ€™s handy: old bedsheets, tarps, patched-up scraps. The sheet runs through a hole in the sternpost and gets tied off with a quick knot when the course is steady. Thereโ€™s even a little flying jib strung up to the masthead. And somehow, with just a carved skeg for a keel, these things sail to weather like champs. Theyโ€™re not just boatsโ€”theyโ€™re proof of what you can do with skill, ingenuity, and a whole lot of grit.

Uncharted reefs and rocks make the northern entrance hazardous and it is recommended to approach this bay from the west, taking great care passing between the islands and the peninsula between the northern and southern coves.

Anchorage

The cove shoals rapidly and the bottom is rocky. Find a sandy patch close to the mouth of the inlet in 3-4m. Dinghy ashore to any of the small beaches in the bay except the beach in the southern cove which is claimed to be owned by the hotel.

This anchorage is located in the northern bay of Caleta Paraiso. It is a tiny cove with swinging room for just one boat and might be tight fit for larger vessels larger than 55โ€™. The bay is well protected from the south and east and has moderate shelter from northerlies but swell from NW-N wraps around the headland.

12) RECENT HISTORY OF INCREASING
PANAMA CANAL ๐Ÿ’ต FEES

Panama Cana fee increases

Since 2001 the fees have been filling up

PANAMA CANAL FEES in 2001

2001-2002: Tolls for small vessels were based on the Panama Canal Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS). Specific rates for vessels under 65 feet during this period are not detailed in the available sources.

2007: The ACP restructured its pricing to better align with the value provided to different market segments. This restructuring aimed to reflect the "true value" of the Canal's services to its customers.

Autoridad del Canal de Panamรก

2016: A more complex toll system was introduced on April 1, 2016. For small vessels up to 125 feet, tolls were assessed based on length overall (LOA). The rates were:

Up to 50 feet: $800

50.01 to 80 feet: $1,300

80.01 to 100 feet: $2,000

100.01 feet and above: $3,200

2023: As of January 1, 2023, the transit cost for yachts less than 65 feet was $1,760. Additional fees included a $75 Transit Vessel Inspection (TVI) charge and a $165 security charge. A buffer deposit of $1,060 was also required if no agent was used, refundable upon successful transit without incident.

13) DUGONG ๐Ÿฆญ MANATEE โ‹†๏ฝกหš๐“‡ผ โ‹†๏ฝกหš SEACOWS

DUGONG

Dugongs and manatees are the only predominantly herbivorous aquatic mammals. Given that manatees use both marine and fresh water ecosystems they tend to have a broader diet, eating many kinds of submerged, floating or emergent algae and seagrass (even bank growth!). On the other hand, dugongs are a strictly marine species and primarily feed on seagrass, which may look very similar to seaweeds, but are in fact marine flowering plants.

Seagrass tend to form underwater shallow meadows that are among the most productive ecosystems in the world6. In fact, dugong grazing influences the biomass, species composition and nutritional quality of seagrass meadows. Just like we take care of our gardens, dugongs regulate seagrass ecosystems. But there is more. Research conducted in the Great Barrier Reef indicates that seagrass seeds that have been digested by dugongs germinate at a faster rate. As well as playing a role in dispersal, it appears that dugongs are pooping seeds with enhanced germination potential, hence participating to seagrass meadow resilience.

20) THE BATTLE OF THE FLOWERS
BATALLA DE FLORES @ CARNIVAL BARRANQUILLA
Sat, Mar 1, 2025 โ€“ Tue, Mar 4, 2025

CARNEVAL IN BARANQUILLA

A Celebration of Chaos and Color

The Barranquilla Carnival kicks off four days before Ash Wednesday, exploding into life with a riot of color, music, and unrestrained revelry. The crescendo arrives Saturday with the legendary Batalla de las Floresโ€”a dazzling clash of Colombian joy, where the streets become battlegrounds of flowers, costumes, and unyielding celebration.

Tatiana, la reina del Carnaval 2025

Tatiana, la reina del Carnaval 2025

Prelude to Madness: Pre-Carnival Frenzy

Though the carnival officially starts with the Lectura del Bandoโ€”a proclamation demanding uninhibited dancing and wild abandonโ€”Barranquilla starts to buzz weeks ahead. Pre-Carnival events are electric with anticipation. From the Toma de la Ciudad (Taking the City) to the crowning of the Carnival King and Queen, the city pulses with life. But the highlight of this buildup is La Guacherna, a Friday night parade where cumbias, masquerades, and infectious rhythms light up the streets like a thunderstorm of joy.

BARANQUILLA

Saturday: The Battle of the Flowers

Saturday delivers the Batalla de las Flores, a spectacle etched into history since 1903. For six vibrant hours, colossal floats roll down the avenues, each a masterpiece of artistry and exuberance. Iconic carnival characters like Rey Momo, Marรญa Moรฑitas, and the mischievous Hombre Caimรกn come to life, delighting the crowds. The queen of the carnival leads the charge, throwing flowers and dancing with her court, while marimondasโ€”figures with long noses and vibrant costumesโ€”march alongside gigantonas, dwarfs with oversized heads. Itโ€™s a symphony of chaos and jubilation.

BARANQUILLA Saturday: The Battle of the Flowers

Sunday: The Grand Parade

Sunday sheds the floats but not the fervor. Itโ€™s a day for masks, disguises, and fierce competition as dance groups battle for the honor of performing in next yearโ€™s Batalla de las Flores. Folk traditions like the Torito dance, the mesmerizing moves of the Garabato, and the elegant Hilanderas (Spinners) take center stage during the Gran Parada. The energy is raw, the stakes are high, and the streets pulse with life.

Sunday: The Grand Parade

Monday: The Sound of Carnival

Monday cranks the volume up with the Festival de Orquestas. Caribbean and Latin bands ignite the city, vying for the coveted Golden Congo award. Amid the music, the Fantasy Parade adds a kaleidoscope of costumes and creativity, pushing the limits of imagination.

Monday: The Sound of Carnival

Tuesday: The Farewell of Joselito

Carnival ends with bittersweet revelry on Calle 84. Here, the queen of the carnival, dressed in mourning black, grieves the symbolic death of Joselito Carnaval, the soul of the party. Her theatrical fainting marks the passing of the festivities, but not before the streets explode once more with music, cumbia dancers, and costumed revelers, ensuring the carnival ends in unforgettable style.

The Barranquilla Carnival isnโ€™t just a festivalโ€”itโ€™s a full-throttle celebration of life, history, and the unbreakable spirit of Colombia. Each dance, costume, and note of music is a testament to the grit, joy, and passion that define this legendary event.

27) House on the Hill on the Panama Canal

PANAMA CANAL HOUSE OF THE ENGINEER

The House on the Hill on the Panama Canal, often referred to in historical accounts, served as the residence of the chief engineer or project manager during the construction of the canal. It stands as a symbol of the monumental effort and leadership required to oversee one of the most ambitious engineering feats in history.

Key Facts about the House on the Hill and Its Role:

1. The Historical Context

The house was built during the early 20th century, during the American-led construction of the Panama Canal (1904โ€“1914) by lead engineer John Frank Stevens.

It provided a commanding view of the canal's construction areas, symbolizing authority and oversight.

2. The Role of the Chief Engineer

The chief engineer was the lead figure in managing the canal's construction, with responsibilities ranging from technical problem-solving to labor management.

Notable chief engineers include:

John Frank Stevens: Credited with reorganizing the project and prioritizing worker health and safety.

George Washington Goethals: Known as the "Man Who Finished the Canal," he oversaw its completion and managed the transition to operations.

3. Strategic Location

Situated to provide a panoramic view of the canal's progress, the house symbolized the leadership's ability to "oversee" every aspect of the project.

Its location reinforced the project manager's central role in coordinating the vast workforce, machinery, and resources.

4. Living Conditions

The house offered better living conditions compared to the workers' accommodations, emphasizing the hierarchy within the project.

It was equipped with amenities that allowed the chief engineer to work and host meetings effectively.

22) THE PANAMA CANAL

One incredible sailing fact about Panama is that it offers the unique ability to sail between two oceansโ€”the Atlantic and the Pacificโ€”within the same country. The Panama Canal, a 50-mile engineering marvel, allows vessels to traverse from one ocean to the other in less than a day , saving thousands of miles of travel around South Americaโ€™s Cape Horn. This strategic waterway is not only a key passage for global maritime trade but also a bucket-list experience for sailors, offering a rare chance to navigate through lush tropical scenery while witnessing massive locks in action.
