Here’s a guide to cruising Southern California, tailored for captains:

Planning Your Route

Southern California’s coastline stretches from Santa Barbara down to San Diego, with various must-visit spots in between. While the distance between major ports is relatively short, it’s essential to consider prevailing wind patterns, currents, and the busy shipping lanes, especially near Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Santa Barbara to Ventura

Santa Barbara Harbor is a great starting point, offering full marina services, fuel, and provisioning. The run from Santa Barbara to Ventura (about 25 nautical miles) is often accompanied by the westerly afternoon winds, making for a pleasant downwind sail. Ventura Harbor, with its large marina and nearby Channel Islands, provides an excellent stopover for exploring these rugged and remote islands.

Channel Islands

If time permits, a detour to the Channel Islands National Park is highly recommended. The islands, particularly Santa Cruz and Anacapa, offer secluded anchorages, clear waters for snorkeling, and hiking trails with breathtaking views. The weather conditions can change rapidly, so ensure that you have a reliable weather forecast and prepare for potential fog and stronger winds.

Ventura to Marina del Rey

The next leg takes you from Ventura to Marina del Rey (approximately 40 nautical miles), the largest man-made small craft harbor in the world. Marina del Rey is not only a perfect stop for re-provisioning and refueling but also a gateway to the vibrant culture of Los Angeles. The harbor is well-protected, and the marina offers a variety of dining and entertainment options.

Marina del Rey to King Harbor, Redondo Beach

A short sail south (about 8 nautical miles) brings you to King Harbor in Redondo Beach. King Harbor is a quieter stop, ideal for a relaxing day. The harbor is known for its excellent fishing opportunities and local seafood restaurants. Keep an eye on the weather as the local winds can pick up, especially in the afternoon.

Marina del Rey to Catalina Island (Avalon) (26 Nautical Miles)

Departing from Marina del Rey, set a course for Avalon Harbor on Catalina Island. The journey across the San Pedro Channel is a straight shot, and Avalon is the main port of entry on the island. Avalon is known for its Mediterranean charm, with plenty of moorings, shops, and dining options. It’s a well-protected harbor, making it ideal for an overnight stop.
Things to Do in Avalon:
- Visit the Catalina Casino, which houses a theater, ballroom, and museum.

King Harbor to Long Beach

Continuing south (about 18 nautical miles), Long Beach offers several marina options, with Shoreline Marina being the most popular. The harbor’s breakwater provides excellent protection, but captains should be mindful of the heavy commercial traffic in the area.

Long Beach to Newport Beach

From Long Beach, sail down to Newport Beach (approximately 12 nautical miles). Newport Harbor is a large, upscale marina, offering luxury facilities and easy access to the charming town of Newport Beach. This harbor is also the starting point for many races and is known for its vibrant yachting community. The entrance can be narrow and busy, so approach with caution.

Newport Beach to Dana Point

The cruise to Dana Point (about 10 nautical miles) is a picturesque journey, with the towering cliffs of Laguna Beach on your starboard side. Dana Point Harbor is a boater’s favorite, offering excellent facilities, including boatyards and a well-stocked chandlery. The harbor is well-protected and is an ideal spot to wait out any adverse weather.

Dana Point to Oceanside

Heading further south, Oceanside Harbor (approximately 20 nautical miles) offers a more laid-back atmosphere. Oceanside is smaller but offers full services and a pleasant marina. The harbor is well-sheltered, and the approach is straightforward, but be aware of the breaking waves near the entrance in rough weather.

Oceanside to San Diego

The final leg of your journey brings you to San Diego Bay (about 35 nautical miles). The city offers everything from vibrant nightlife in the Gaslamp Quarter to historical sites like the USS Midway Museum. US CUSTOMS: US ROAM application was updated July 2022. A new feature assists with port check ins required by US Customs if the foreign vessel has the ROAM application. A vessel first checks in at arrival, and obtains a cruising permit. The vessel captain then enters in the Cruising Permit/ number to US ROAM application. After successful permit information is entered in ROAM, vessels can then use the application to do online check-in at their next port of entry/stops. If a cruising permit has not been entered into ROAM, a boat must physically check in at each stop made at US Ports. Basically a vessel either uses the ROAM app for online check in–or if ROAM is not available, they must check in physically at each port of entry, as has been done previously. There is no change in the need for foreign vessels to check in, just the way its possible.
