Archer Power Solutions
“Archer Power Solutions (APS) has designed the ultimate DIY cooling solution for cruisers and brings a new era of maritime comfort with the Kingfisher MA37X12B, the 12V DC marine air conditioner which has been sold globally, featured in the October 2023 issue of Professional Boat Builder , and has been put to the test by various sailing influencers while sailing the Caribbean! No shore power, inverters or generators needed! This 12V DC system keeps you off-the-grid and runs off your batteries powered by solar or wind. It quickly cools and dehumidifies, has a low-amp draw, and is quiet. Everything you need to install it can be found at reputable home improvement and hardware stores. The refrigerant is easily-found R134a so you don’t have to worry about finding a technician while cruising the Islands. APS’s technology enables the dream of having an air conditioner running off of solar and staying cool at anchor a reality.”
Join us for a demonstration of the Kingfisher with Archer Power Solutions co-founders Onat Dogruer and Yvonne Thurman on Thursday, March 14 from 3:00 – 3:30 p.m. PANAMA TIME via Zoom and learn all you need to know about this true DC-powered, self-contained, battery-operated marine air conditioner. You can check out their website at:www.archerpowersolutions.com , see specs for the unit, watch an informational video, and browse the FAQ section.
Why this system?
- State-of-the-art electronics. A digital electronic expansion valve synchronized to a variable speed BLDC compressor constantly calibrates from 6 different data collection points
- 12V Direct Current. Yes, you can wire it yourself directly to a battery shunt. No VAC wiring, no inverters, no starter loads, and NO GENERATORS!
- Superior cooling. This unit can deliver up to 5000 BTU/hr.
- Control Box mounting flexibility. It can remain mounted to the side of the unit or use the 4 foot wiring harness to mount it separately. The wiring between the Control Box and the unit can be disconnected and reconnected.
- 1.75 GPM water flow. Small enough to T-it from an existing seacock. **Don’t forget, you still have to install a seawater pump – but with these units, all you need is a DC water pump (Not included)**
- Incredible air flow. 275CFM on High, 245 CFM on Medium, 185 CFM on Low
- Whisper quiet. We designed this system with the idea that the user may be sleeping on a berth over it!
- Digital user interface screen. This simple bulkhead mount (just like your home thermostat) monitors the room temperature and humidity and includes easy-to-understand error icons
- Sleep timer. Set it to cool for up to 8 hours and go to sleep. The unit will shut itself off at the designated time. No risk of draining your batteries!
- Rated Current of the compressor is only 12.1A/hour. The variable speed BLDC compressor speeds up and down depending on the loads and conditions.
- ABS plastic drain pan. No more rusty drain pans! Our drain pan is angled so that the water drains quickly and doesn’t pool. Aluminum components.
- Adjustable blower exit. Vertical or horizontal placements allows for easier install
- R134a refrigerant is same as in your car. Units are shipped pre-charged so there is no need for a service call during installation
- Air duct diameter. Standard 4”
- Seawater and condensate drain connections. Standard 3/4”
- High Side and Low Side service ports. Industry standard 1/4″ should it ever need refrigerant servicing

Summary
Technical Aspects of 12-Volt System and New AC System
The meeting primarily focused on the technical aspects of a 12-volt system. Archer clarified its efficiency and cost, and suggested signing up for their email list for updates. The team also discussed the specifics of the system, including the need for a continuously rated pump and the potential use of existing AC pumps. Chris raised a question about power draw from the water pump, with the team noting the need for a dedicated 12-volt pump. Later in the meeting, the team introduced a new air conditioner system, King Fisher. They also discussed their current locations and upcoming plans, including a journey across the Pacific to Marcasis.
DC Powered Marine Air Conditioner Upgrade
Tom and Mark discussed the latest version of their marine air conditioner, which is fully DC powered and operates at 12 volts. They emphasized its features such as an all-plastic drain pan for condensation, a removable drain pan, and a number of features to enhance its efficiency. Tom noted that the system incorporates an electronic expansion valve and a variable speed, fully DC powered compressor for optimization and efficiency. They also highlighted the unit’s serviceability and its compact electronics box with two to four connections, DC power, and a fully adjustable blower port. The new version of the system aims to run without generators or backup power other than a solar system, reducing power load on the battery bank and extending run times. Archer then discussed the unit’s design and efficiency, emphasizing its ability to cool specific areas on a boat, and demonstrated the unit’s user interface.
Variable Speed Compressor and New Fan Unit Discussion
Archer discussed the benefits of a variable speed compressor for energy efficiency. He demonstrated its usage, highlighting its ability to maintain a 20-25 degree Fahrenheit difference between incoming seawater temperature and the air coming out. Archer also introduced a new fan unit with three speed levels and a sleep timer function. He clarified that the unit’s cooling and humidity removal capabilities depend on the volume of air it needs to cool. Chad raised concerns about the unit’s installation and performance, suggesting potential improvements for future models. The conversation ended with an open invitation for further questions via email or phone.
