ORCAS.pt is a volunteer-driven initiative dedicated to monitoring and documenting interactions between orcas and vessels along the coasts of Portugal and Spain. Established in response to a surge in orca encounters since 2020, the platform serves as an additional aid to navigation  for seafarers  navigating these waters 

Mission and Activities

Operating as a collaborative hub, ORCAS.pt collects and shares real-time data on orca sightings and interactions. Sailors can report incidents through the platform, contributing to a comprehensive database that aids in tracking orca movements and behaviors. This information is crucial for understanding patterns and developing strategies to mitigate risks associated with orca encounters.

Recommendations for Mariners

In collaboration with organizations like Orca Ibérica, ORCAS.pt provides guidelines for sailors to reduce the likelihood of orca interactions.

• Maintain a low profile: Avoid attracting orcas by minimizing noise and movement on deck.

• Do not engage: Refrain from shouting, touching, or throwing objects at orcas.

• Stop the vessel: If an orca approaches, stopping the boat and disengaging the rudder can decrease their interest 

These measures aim to protect both the marine mammals and the vessels, promoting coexistence in shared waters.

ORCAS.pt fosters a sense of community among sailors, encouraging the sharing of experiences and strategies to navigate orca-populated areas safely. Through its platform and associated communication channels, it serves as a nexus for information exchange and support.
